View Full Version : Lehigh Climbs to #9 in Latest Poll

After an impressive showing at the Virginia Duals this past weekend the Mountain Hawks have climbed to the #9 spot in the latest Coaches Poll. Friday night Lehigh will host the West Virginia Mountaineers followed with a visit from long time rival Navy on Saturday afternoon. Both matches will be held in venerable Grace Hall. The Navy match will the 90th meeting between the two schools and will be followed by a special dinner at the Hotel Bethlehem honoring Lehigh's 100th dual meet season. Mountain Hawks also now have 9 of 10 wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes. A huge match up will occur in the Navy match at 285 between #6 Zach Rey and #5 Scott Steele.

That's pretty impressive, although it's still a long way from Iowa & Iowa State. It's interesting watching those two this year. An already intense rivalry is being taken to a whole new level. I have a co-worker who is an Iowa State alumnus and he describes Iowa's wrestlers as machines -- they've bought into whatever it is the Brands brothers are selling and have turned off their brains and become wrestling robots.

Cal Poly Wrestling is ranked number 17 in the Coaches Poll and number 14 in the WIN Magazine poll.

Still unclear how strong we will be at NCAAs in March as a tournament team. While 8 of our wrestlers are in the Top 20, only one is in the top 5 (Rey is now #4 at 285). Tough schedule will hopefully toughen them up. At same time, 3 weights are still going through highly competitive wrestle-offs at 149, 165, and 174.
