Lehigh had one of, if not, the greatest dual meet comeback in its storied history today when after trailing the Oklahoma Sooners 16-0 after four bouts, staged an unbelieveable comeback winning the next 6 bouts for a final score of 18-16. Research will have to be done to see if it is the largest deficit overcome. It ranks up there with the 2002 NCAA Championship final between Lehigh's Rob Rohn at 184 trailing, by all ironies, Oklahoma's Jake Lambrecht 14-3 in the third and final period, when Rohn hit the notorious "cement job" or "cement mixer" and took the Sooner to his back for the fall with less than 20 seconds remaining. Throughout the tournament, Lehigh was without Captain Matt Fisk at 133 due to a skin infection, and yielded a 6 point fall by the 125 back up. But the upper weights gutted it out, winning 5 of the 6 against top 20 ranked individuals.
Unfortunately, it appeared the Mountain Hawks shot their wad in losing 30-6 in the finals to Oklahoma State, who got revenge against Lehigh for its stunning loss to the Mountain Hawks last year in the Brute Tournament, including giving up another 6 points at 133. Also, surprising was Rey losing by fall at 285, since Rey had previously beaten two wrestlers who had beaten Rosholt of the Cowboys.
Still a second place finish ahead of Oklahoma, Penn State, Edinboro and Maryland was better than expected.
Lehigh is now 9-3 on the season and returns to action at home, in Grace Hall, on January 15 against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Team should also be ranked in the Top 10 next week.
