Ok, so I have a friend who has a friend who is a walk-on at OU. The walk on guy says that he gets $600 dollars, and an x-box and he won't even PLAY in the bowl game that OU is gonna play in. (Jokes beg to come out but stay in)
Is this true? Do the Players get money and expensive gifts for their farce of
a football game? Geez, I am disgusted with 1-A. Do AA guys get money and gifts for getting to the playoffs?
I am new to 1AA but it seems to me any one looking for FOOTBALL can skip
right over the bowl games.

They get loads of goodies at the bowl games...from mini-DVD players to iPods to rings and everything else...

If I remember reading correctly the money is to cover travel expenses and is only given if they dont travel with the team. Some players since they are home for the holidays will drive with their family, friends, or other teammates in order to save money and actually profit from the travel allowance.

They do get a decent amount of money to live on for the week. I was talking with a Bama player this summer and he was complaining about guys spending their bowl money at stripers

Cash money being given to student-athletes is against NCAA rules isn't it? :nonono2: :nonono2: I-A, what a shining example for collegiate athletic purity.

If people look the other way when rules are broken then they are part of the problem and should be held accountable. SHAME!

I think they ought to be able to pay them as student workers anyway. If I could get paid for being a student worker back when I was in college I don't see why athletes can't be paid for being public relations agents for their schools. I know there are lots of complications but the current situation is ridiculous in my opinion.

I was friends with a walk on a Texas as well... this is the case for a couple reasons when it comes to the cash.

Texas was playing in the Holiday Bowl a couple years back which I beleive is played on the 28th or so... The players and coaches are spread all over the area (Dallas, Austin, Houston, etc...) and are not able to travel with the team. From my understading teams dont have a "charter" during most bowl games because of the holidays... I am sure most Jan 1 bowl games have a charter because most kids are back in town by Dec 26 or so.

Anyway my buddy used his $600 to repair his car and the funny/ironic thing is that he was from San Diego to start off with. His mom worked for the airlines and he was able to fly standby back. They would have picked it up anyway. He also got stay with the team at the hotel. Tour Sea World, Navy facilites, etc with the team. Got 6 game tickets I believe. Also got the standard goody bag. Crazy stuff...

Bowl games are a complete waste of money!

Thanks for all the info, I never knew that guys got MORE than a free trip, nice hotel, meals, national exposure and one more game of football. As far as I'm concerned the Full ride scholarship is payment for public relations for the school. The free education combined with a cost free unique experience should do it for any prima I don't CARE , I just kind of Care. And besides, today is a holiday and we should all be enjoying our families and friends. Good Day to all the
(far superior) 1-AA fans!

That's crazy. I can see getting a gift, but that much stuff seems a bit overboard. Then again, as a member of the media, I love getting free stuff too.

The NCAA allows a certain amount of Per Diem to every player. For that matter, I-AA players who are involved in the playoffs get Per Diem too. In 1995, QB Mike Cawley of James Madison had his Per Diem taken back by the NCAA as punishment for his taunting of Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore and his comments bashing game officials in the post-game press conference.

Money for food I get. Money for Monies sake?
Give me a break. Since when is a FREE education not enough.
Our 1AA guys play cause they love the game. Some have full scholarships, some have partial.....NONE of them get a game machine for doing what is expected. So you miss Xmas with Mom and Dad, ok, This guy is a scout team only walk on dude. He is a Rudy equivalant- and he says he get 600 dollars, and game machine and a phone what do the starters get? If the NCAA wanted to make 1A football non-professional I think they would go to a playoff system, like AA and let's see the guys who play because football is important to them play. The rest can sit out 2 years and go pro.

OK I said I was done, and I wasn't, but now I am.

It's not just players that get these goodies. When I was a graduate assistant at Tennessee, we went to the Peach Bowl and I got $250 per diem and a sweet Fossil watch (which I have since lost) along with a polo and some other goodies. The players got more things (like a dolby digital home theater system). Of course the best part was the bowl of chick-fil-a chicken biscuits in the staff meeting every morning.

Not to be mean... but doesn't 1A schools have more money than 1AA? So if the ADs want to spend the money that way let them. I am a 1A guy and I think that is too much for a player, but if that is how they want to spend their money let them.
