Boston and John Lackey have reportedly agreed on a 5 year deal for about $85 million.
Boston will be working to get Josh Beckett signed to a new deal very soon.
Boston and Mike Cameron have agreed on a 2 year, $15.5 million deal.
I think this could end up leading to a deal with San Diego for Adrian Gonzalez that would send Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz to the Padres.
Cameron would play CF with great defense and more power then Ellsbury, Ryan Kalish who should be ready in 2011 may have pushed Ellsbury out of CF anyway.
Boston could then still target Jason Bay or Matt Holliday for LF
Imagine this for a moment if you will.
Dustin Pedroia
JD Drew
Victor Martinez
Kevin Youkilis
Adrian Gonzalez
Jason Bay or Matt Holliday
David Ortiz
Mike Cameron
Marco Scutaro
1 thru 8 have 20 HR potential with Pedroia being the least likely to get there, but hes good for near 60 doubles a year.
Hermida
Varitek
Max Ramirez
Kotchman
Beckett
Lester
Lackey
Matsuzaka
Wakefield
Papelbon
Ramirez
Bard
Okajima
Delcarmen
that with 2 more additions likely in the bullpen from a large group of players they have has the makings of one very solid roster.

If it helps make the Yankees lose games, I'm all for it.

Why would the Padres trade their star player, at a reasonable salary, for one good prospect and a so-so centerfielder (which you basically admit he is). I could see that trade but with at least 2-3 more big-time prospects on Boston's side.

The argument might be that SD will be under pressure to trade Gonzalez due to contract concerns which would force their hand sooner rather than later, though I don't know how much longer he's signed for

where do I admit Ellsbury is a so so centerfielder? Because Kalish would be pushing him out in a couple years? Yes Kalsih has more power, and is better defensively, doesn't mean Ellsbury isnt good.
Ellsbury has 120 stolen bases the past two years and hit .301 with a .355 OBP in 2009. He plays above average defense and could hit 20 triples a year playing at Petco.
Also, I am not saying those two would be the only players SD gets, but they would be the centerpieces. They have Gonzalez for 2 more seasons, they would have Buchholz for I believe 5 and Ellsbury 4 before they have to worry about re-signing them.

Not bad offseason so far. Boston will greatly improve their team including the rotation and defense and in the process go from one 1st round draft pick next year to three.

They aren't going to go for Bay or Holliday...Cameron, Ellsbury, Drew. - that is the outfield for 2010.

Pitching wins championships and the Sox have more of that then the Yankees...Hitting wins divison titles and the Yankees have more of that...take the division give me the ring!

there is a very real possibility they use Ellsbury and Buchholz to get Ad Gonzalez

I'm alright with all that, except Mike Cameron was old 3 years ago. His best days are behind him.

Yes and he the fact that he is a CF leads me to believe the Sox feel very comfortable that they will be able to get a big bat once these deals are done. Adding a quality starter as opposed to lower level guys like last season and getting a CF makes me believe a deal will be coming involving Buchholz and Ellsbury. Cameron replacing Ellsbury makes more sense then Cameron replacing Bay. As I have said before, Boston has Kalish coming along who plays better defense then Ellsbury and has more power. If Ellsbury remains with Boston he would likely end up in RF with Kalish in CF once Drew is gone.
