Thoughts on this one? I bet lots of people won't be thrilled with A-10 in 4th and I know I'm not happy with the SLC being 6th. I know the SWAC folks won't be thrilled much either, but they didn't have success out of conference and the Big South is still a work in progress...

If you look at it from top to bottom it seems like the Big Sky, Gateway, and Southern are all fairly equal and slightly ahead of the rest.

As always I think it's better just to look at power ratings. Though the Southern had an impressive nonconference record at 18-2 in the regular season and 23-3 overall (App 3-0, Furman 2-0, GSU 0-1 in the playoffs against other conferences), the regular season non conference schedule was not strong. 13 of the regular season games were against the Big South and OVC. Another three were against 3-8 North Carolina A&T, 0-11 Savannnah State, and Morehead State of the Pioneer League (though they did finish 8-4).

Maybe Ralph can get the Massey conference Rankings (not his BCS system, his regular one). I expect it's going to have the Southern Conference ranked close to the same as Sagarin's system (which has it 5th).

As a Southland fan, looking at head to head, there were only three games between the Southern and Southland with the Southland winning two of three. A team that finished 3-3 in the Southland beat a team that finished 5-2 in the Southern by 3 and a team that finished 5-1 in the Southland lost to a team that finished 5-2 in the Southern by 2. Both games were home games for the Southern Conference teams. Then during the playoffs a team that finished 5-1 in the Southland beat a team that finished 5-2 in the Southern by 15...this time on the Southland team's home field. I think that's pretty consistent with Sagarin's power ratings...which rates the two leagues as close to equal.

No surprise that the A-10 is down to fourth. Weak year out-of-conference, and only two playoff teams. Several A-10 teams suffered from inconsistent play this year, with the Tribe leading the list.

James Madison lost a close game at Coastal Carolina, fell in tough conditions at Massachusetts, and couldn’t put it together in close losses against Delaware and Richmond

The loss at Delaware was not close. JMU was beaten on both sides of the ball in this game. Omar Cuff ran for over 200 yards against that really tough Dukes defense. Matt needs to do a little bit of homework which should have been easy since he is in Philly.

The Best Team in the Nation: Appalachian State.

Final Score: Delaware 34, James Madison 28. Boy, that sure sounds like a rout to me. I actually saw the television broadcast of this game and while Delaware piled up a lot of yards, this was a game the Blue Hens could have easily lost.

The Blue Hens took the lead for good in the third quarter as Cuff scored on another one-yard burst and Riccio hit LaForgia for the two-point conversion for a 22-14 lead with 4:37 left in the stanza. Riccio then hit a wide-open LaForgia for a two-yard scoring pass with 8:10 left to up the lead to 28-21. James Madison climbed back on a 13-yard scoring pass from Rascati to L.C. Baker with 6:15 left to play to cut the lead to 28-21, but Cuff put the game away with a 60-yard scoring jaunt around the left end with 2:45 remaining to up the lead to 34-21.

James Madison made it a one touchdown game when Rascati hit Casime Harris on an 18-yard scoring pass with 1:29 to cut the lead to 34-28, but Delaware recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock to pick up the much-needed victory.

“Delaware played a perfect game today,” said James Madison head coach Mickey Matthews. “They had no turnovers and no major penalties. We just couldn’t tackle Omar Cuff. He’s a great player - the best back in this league. That was the game, we just weren’t able to stop him.”

There are four great 1-AA conferences. There is however only one SoCon. Championships are for champions. The facts are the facts, since 1987, NO conference can touch the SoCon for championship teams. Look at the SEC/ACC teams that we have beaten, then add Stump Mitchell, Dick Sheridan, Sparky Woods,Terrell Owens, Clyde Simmons, Dino Hackett, John Settle, Willie Williams, Dexter Coakley, Bobby Ross, Erk Russell, Troy Brown, Jerry Moore, Paul Johnson,Tracy Ham, Brad Hoover etc with the champions in Furman, Marshall, App, GaSo and anyone would have to conclude that in 1-AA football, DIXIE RULES. Any arguments are null and void. Championships stand on their on two legs. 1-A wins against UNC, USC, NCSU, ARKANSAS, ARMY, NAVY, LaTech, Wake Forest, La Lafayette put the Gateway to bed. The facts are the facts, the oldest 1-AA conference is also the best.

I really have a hard time with the PL being 11 rating points below the Ivy. Seems like we held our own with them this year and on balance played tougher schedules. :eyebrow:

The bottom of our league keeps us down, against the Ivys AND all of I-AA. If we had our bottom 3 as strong as a our top 4, we'd be a higher rated conference.

Plus, Colgate losing to a bad Dartmouth team doesn't help. :bawling:

That just goes to show that I-A southern teams are overated as well xazzx :)
