What's the answer to this. I do not know. Just wondering because of that last review. The receiver was obviously forced-out by the DB.

gn54549
December 11th, 2009, 09:44 PM
i still think review is good, just bad luck on the timing for that one...

also if they'd call for the review quickly, it wouldn't be a big deal because you wouldn't see the result of the play after the play being reviewed

looks like they overcame it anyways

ill sum it up for u.
bill and mary jump out to a 10-0 halftime lead highlighted by a 98 yard td pass, nova couldnt move the ball any during the 1st half. 2nd half has been highlighted by a punt return td by nova's specilaist sczcur (pronounced like the salad dressing caesar.) another td has given nova the 14-13 lead and thats where we are now.

It will if Appy or Grizzy only score 13. xnodx The Tribe only got that record setting TD and a pair of FGs. Chattanooga should be fun (would be better if we were there :( )

Pretty sure we had to listen to CAA fans going on and on about how Richmond would shut down App's offense. 444 yards and 35 points later.............. :D

Villanova certainly earned this win, but I can't help but question the effect that replay had on this game. The multiple stoppages of play really slowed W&M's momentum on a couple of offensive drives and gave the Villanova D (which was on the field for 31 of the first 43 minutes of the game) a chance to rest.

Obviously the overturned call before Nova's second TD was important (whether I agree it was irrefutable or not is another topic), but in general I think replay killed the momentum of the game in a way that really benefitted Villanova.

No sour grapes here, Nova is a deserving team and I wish them luck in Chatty, but I'm curious what other folks thought about replay's impact on the flow of the game?

I was pulling for the tribe and sorry they lost. I believe you can throw on Nova's D and William and Mary just did not spread them out enough....you have to score more than 13 points....takes more than D alone to win a title....

Congrats Nova!!! I was pulling for Nova for selfish reasons. ASU now has a chance to become only the 4th team to beat 3 of the top 4 seeds. If I researched it correctly it has only been done by GSU in '85 (1, 4 and 2), WKY in '02 (2, 3 and 1) and Richmond in '08 (2, 3 and 4).

I'm still not convinced he got a cleat down on that catch. My biggest question with the reviews is: Why did it start in the 2nd half? They reviewed obvious catches by W&M in the 3rd quarter -- why? Why weren't these reviewed in the 1st half? Did they see something at halftime which they thought they needed to review?

I'm certainly biased and didn't see anything they really blew in the 1st half, but I'd love to hear others' impressions on why replay wasn't used at all in the 1st half, but was used to review what seemed like obvious calls in the 2nd.

I saw the replay from the ESPN camera guy on the sidelines, Harvey definitely got a toe down on the catch. There were no close calls in the first half. Only one I saw was on a punt where it hit the Nova player on the 3 yard line and then touched again on the 1 and the ref spotted the ball on the 1. Replay should be in every FCS game, it is a shame it is not.

Folks, the fact is that college football is simply not a significant part of the sports culture in the northeast, especially the urban northeast. The four major pro sports plus college basketball (and in some places even college hockey, and where I'm originally from, even women's basketball) are what people care about more--much more--than college football. Even major college football is little more than a niche sport. Lower-division college football doesn't stand a chance, no matter if it's a national semifinal game.

I completely understand why this is difficult for people from the south (and midwest, and pretty much every other part of the country) to comprehend, but you'll just have to accept it. It's also difficult for people from Europe and the rest of the world to comprehend why people in the U.S. don't go crazy about soccer. All that can be said is that there's a cultural difference.

And, unfortunately, I-AA gets little respect in many of the Southern states where the SEC AND ACC loom. SC is an exception with such a large presence of I-AA programs.

The fan attendance thing has been talked, hashed and dissected over and over. If Villanova brings 2000 or 20 it does not demean the fact that they earned the right to be there. For Appalachian to have 30,000 is great. More power to them. I just wish people will stop trying to degrade a program because they do not have as many fans as the next team. Everyone wants a ton but everyone does not them and real of the real some teams will never have a lot. If suggesting that a team needs more and should get more is all you have to talk about then maybe you should give us all pointers as how to get more in the stands. Believe me when I tell you all the programs that lack fan support are trying to get more people interested in their teams.

I respect any program that fills their stadium each week. I have no respect for the ones who think they did something personally to fill it. For those who talk about it all the time, get into the X's and O's of the game. Not one down will be determined by fan numbers.

You know who is treated in the Philly area as the local college football team????......................Penn State! And they are like 3-4 hours west of Philly. Seriously. They are covered in depth by the local papers and tv channels.

I guess it rankles some fans on this board that a team in the NC game doesn't have a huge fan base. And that's ok. But I don't think Nova ever had a large fan base, nor do I think they ever will. And that's ok too. Because they don't let it affect the product on the field. Which is all that matters.

Granted, we as I-AA fans want a better showcase of the number of fans in a semi-final game that's being televised on ESPN as it may help all of I-AA. But for some schools, that just won't happen. So get over it!!

Villanova has plenty of fans. We sell out the Wachovia Center (20,000+) for basketball games every year. Our fans just look down on FCS football as minor league. It's sad and wrong, but that's the situation. It's hard to get fired up for Villanova-Towson after seeing the hoops team in the Final Four.

Ironically, Villanova would draw much better as an FBS team, even though we'd have much less success.

Exactly, it's a function of playing teams (and schools) that people know about. The Villanova turnout against Temple this year was very solid and I only see it being higher if they had a regular schedule against teams like the service academies, Pitt, Rutgers etc. It's a weird situation, but our fanbase feels that FBS is where our true peers lie (i tend to agree.) I think if Villanova wins the National Championship, there will be a serious look into whether moving up is a viable option (and whether the Big East will let it happen.) There are some Rumblings from within that people shouldn't be shocked if Villanova makes a serious effort to move up within the next 5 years.

You do and you don't. I remember in 2004, after losing to JMU, thinking that I'd rather them win the national title than anyone not from the CAA. But, thinking about it now, and knowing a few JMU grads, its kind of painful when one of your rivals has a title and you don't - and you had your chances to beat them and win that title yourself.

That said, I'm rooting for Nova on Friday - and hoping we can figure them out next season at Zable.

great game Nova... gutsy play in the 2nd half to come back like that and run out the clock at the end. You had the Tribe starting inside the 5 repeatedly in the first half, with nothing to show for it.

Rough loss for the Tribe... but a great season. That's the "bad part" about the playoffs... 15 of the 16 teams end with a loss. Good luck on Friday.

I don't really get all of the heckling in this thread. These teams have been solid all year. They knew each other well and they played a real slobberknocker. Villanova will be a tough matchup for whoever wins tonight's game. I like that they are unpredictable on both sides of the ball and I'm not sure that ASU would be able to shut down that wildcat.

ASU can't shut down a good running game. Montana blew their line up and exposed them for what they were. Richmond for some reason went away from the run (London was too busy focussing on UVA).

nova would have beaten ASU worse than the Griz simply because they would not have gotten away from the run.

Either way, it is now nova versus the Griz.

Go CAA!

Couple of things from reading this thread and sitting at the game screaming my head off. Hell of a game played by the Tribe defense. Completely shut us down in the first half. This game could have been 7-6 without the two big plays by both offenses. My player of the game is Scarnecchia (sp?) the punter. What a job he did. He's the prime reason we were able to stay in the game with the horrid job on offense in the first half.

The attendance thing is old and you obviously can't bash the team since that's all you can throw at us. Most don't care and never will. Their loss.

Philliesfan980, I don't know what your agenda is or who your school is, but from reading the garbage you post on here, it's clear you have some disdain not only towards the school, but Talley as well. Talley is class all the way. Go and read "Season in Purgatory" and learn a little bit about the man from an outsider who stuck with the team a whole season. He cares more about those players as men than he does about winning games.

And you also made a comment about the coverage on defense. You obviously haven't been paying attention all year. The DBs give up the short passes to stop the long ball. Short of Temple and last night, they don't give up the long passes. Bend but don't break. They wait for the QB to make a mistake and pounce on it. Archer made one mistake and Dempsey jumped on it.

Can't wait to get to Chattanooga on Friday! VU alumni association is running a tailgate! See you Nova guys making the trip there.

Congrats on the win. And not to be too technical, but Archer didn't make a "mistake", the ball was tipped at the line and Dempsey made a nice play.
