I guess when a game locks up the AGS server, it was pretty good game. Congrats Apps, Richmond had more than their fair share of chances and could not put a nail in the coffin. And AE had more than his say in that. Good luck the rest of the way until you run into the CAA, then GO CAA.

*Hated Richmond's play-calling when they got the two first and goals inside the 10, those two series changed the game.

I have been attending ASU games since 2000 when I was a freshman there and I have experienced "the Miracle on the mountain", "James Madison fumble", "The smashing of Richmond in 07" "the blowout to Wofford" And of course the Championship games and any other close call that we may have had over the past 9 seasons, but this win tonight has to be one of the most exciting finishes of them all!!!

Hats off to UR, you guys played well!!

We got what we deserved tonight for playing a prevent defense the entire game, until we foolishly decided to blitz on the last play, leaving the guy open for a TD. Idiotic. We always seem to lose games like this. Frustrating doesn't begin to describe it. App deserved it and we didn't, plain and simple.

DTSpider
December 5th, 2009, 10:47 PM
Difference was Red Zone offense. ASU 5 for 5 with 5 TDs. UR - only 3 TDs in 5 tries.

We thought the defense was our strength. ASU was just plain better on offense. We just couldn't make the play on defense to get the turnover or the big stop to keep them out of the end zone.

Where were you in, say, 2004?

Being "there for every home game" after three national championships is what fairweather fans do.

So is calling for the resignation of the coach after a rough game when you should be nothing but appreciative of all he's done for the team.

UR knew they couldnt stop ASU in the 2nd half, they HAD to have that fumble in the end zone to even stand a chance. (that's why we saw like 5 richmond players holding up cadet) Even then, with 3:25 left on the clock I think we all knew that AE was going to find a way to win.

Right, because you knew that in sloppy conditions there was no shot an interception or fumble could come up which would have ended the game. I mean, congrats on the win but don't be an a$$hole.

AlphaSigMD
December 5th, 2009, 11:12 PM
This was an awesome game, and I'm glad that Coach Moore and the O.C. started to call a few plays that didn't completely develop behind the line of scrimmage about 3 seconds after the snap.

The minute we started both throwing and running directly downhill we started picking up yards in chunks.

Richmond played a hell of a game, had a balanced attack, got the benefit of quite a few no-calls on holding and pass interference and had an amazing forced turnover and TD on special teams. If you had told me all that and that App State would still win, I would have been pleased, but skeptical.

ASU needs to abandon the slow-developing screen plays to the flat. They have been sniffed out on a regular basis for the last 3 weeks in a row. Call plays similar to what was called in the last 9 minutes of the 4th quarter, and we have a good chance against Montana. Dick around in Wa-Griz with the majority of what called in the 1st-3rd quarters and it could be a loss.

Seriously though, When Armanti Edwards took the field with 3 minutes and 3 time outs you had to think the game was in his hands.

The greatest FCS player has the ball in his hands to extend his career and his legacy. Yes a fumble could happen and nothing is guaranteed, but I was thinking something like 8 out of 10 times we win in this situation.

Just got back. What an amazing game!!

We were running the ball so well in the first quarter... not sure why we got away from it in the second and third... but, we did well on the ground again in the 4th quarter when it mattered. If we can run the ball on Richmond... we can run it on ANYONE.

DEVON MOORE:
175 yards on 22 carries. 8.0 yard average. xeekx
Richmond was giving up ~60 yards per game. We ran it for 228.

Amazing effort.

Right, because you knew that in sloppy conditions there was no shot an interception or fumble could come up which would have ended the game. I mean, congrats on the win but don't be an a$$hole.

Wow. What a game. I just got back to the hotel. All I have to say is that when we were walking bace some ur students were yelling and being jerks. They started a fight and the cops had to come arrest people. Besides that I loved coming to ur. The tolls are strange. I was surprised at richmonds attendance. There was about as many app fans as richmond fans. At most 60-40 % rich. Y'all have one hell of a team. See y'all next yr hopefully

Devon Moore for Payton in 2010.

W&M's run defense is a little better than UR's.

The game definitely had a certain degree of destiny to it then - Moore played his butt off, and wow, what a performance, but agree that watching AE take over at the end of the was just friggin' special.

Plus, hey, hosting ASU fans in Missoula - what's not to like about that? xthumbsupx

Saw those guys. Precisely four bad eggs in a very large UR crowd. I'd say that's a pretty favorable percentage.

Otherwise good folks. The Spider pep band sounded great, even from all the way across the stadium.

W&M's run defense is just solid - a great group of well-disciplined players. Watching them just absolutely shut down SIU was amazing (even if I was pulling for the Salukis in this one).

The final game is already brewing up to be a classic - it'll be one guaranteed CAA team vs. a storied Montana or ASU program. As an FCS fan in general, this will just be plain fun to watch.

This was an awesome game, and I'm glad that Coach Moore and the O.C. started to call a few plays that didn't completely develop behind the line of scrimmage about 3 seconds after the snap.

~~~
I worried about that in the first half ... I think a good bit of it was intentional.
Keep pulling the defense in tighter and tighter - then stretch the field on them later in the game.
Appalachian seem to have a bit of success on a few 10-15 yard 'in-routes' in the first half but never went back to it until later in the game -- when it was more difficult for Richmond to make adjustments.
That - and pounding DM at them xlolx
And BTW ...
I just realized ...
For 2007 and 2008 games, by points we are tied 68-68.
So I predict 47 points will be scored in the 2nd half.
Final Score: Appalachian 35 Richmond 33
I was definitely saying to the folks around me "we'll still win this. we'll still win this." But I was more trying to convince myself.
"Knew" isn't quite the right word.
Thats how JMU felt about Landers in last year's playoffs. Then we still thought that a team of destiny would pull it out after a horrendous few fumbles and Landers went down with the injury.
No way can you say "8 out of 10 times" that you stroll down almost 80 yards for the GW TD against a tough D. Peyton Manning isn't even that good...
Great win for the 'neers as it will be "FCS History" vs "the CAA" for the championship in 2 weeks....
I was in a sports bar, and despite the BCS #1,2, and 3 playing around the same time, the huge crowd there seemed like 90% App fans. And we were LOUD! Awesome game for App and for FCS in general! A shame it wasn't televised nationally.
I was not surprised at Richmond's 1st half defense. Cadet's kick return fumble/td was unbelievably bad to watch, and the 4th quarter comeback was legendary. Armanti and the other seniors will get to play at least one more game, and that dream matchup that so many UM/ASU fans have wanted for years now is finally here (unfortunately it isn't going to be in Chatty). Pretty even first half, I'd be surprised if this doesn't come down to the final drive of the game.
Will ASU of these teams have enough in the tank for Montana next week after this epic battle? Greaat game to both teams, sad to have a loser in that one.
I believe they will. This game reminds me of the JMU game in 2007. I don't think before that game we had a team that was championship quality. Winning that game the way we did put us over the top. I think tonight's win against Richmond could be the same.
Great game ASU. You deserved it. AE is without a doubt one of the best college players ever at this level.
Richmond's inability to put teams away really came back to bite us. Too often we have the lead and the ball inside the other team's 30 and don't finish.
And that prevent D - come on! 9 of the 11 starters from last year's run and they were hardly recognizable.
Kudos to App St. fans too - they were loud and proud, and I had fun with them before, during and after. But please let's dispense with the talk that it was a 50/50 crowd or even 60/40. The West stands were not much fuller than Elon's last week, and that includes the band. Y'all were great but there's just no need to make that statement.
Final thoughts:
Um.......it's hail mary time and you're putting Ward under center?
Did the referee actually break out the credit card on that final first down spot? Talk about a millimeter that made all the difference. I wonder if Jerry kicks the FG on 4th down there.
That's the thing that had me completely baffled most of the game. We came out running the ball and had a lot of success. Devon Moore had around 60 yards rushing in the first quarter. Then we abandoned it until the 4th quarter... I didn't understand that at all.
Who wins the clash of the titans? It’s tempting to say “too close to call.” How will the spread offense of App match up against the stonewall defense? Can Ward keep the ball away from LeGree? It’s an amazing matchup that demonstrates how awesome the playoffs really are - a clash of styles, and leagues, that is somehow perfect. It will come down to the very end - and it’s Appalachian State that will come out on top in the very last game at Richmond Stadium.
could be - I know we never got behind your DBs for a long gainer or TD like we have with other opponents - We have really good receivers however when we lost CoCo Hillary for the season that took a big weapon away - he could beat defenders long or take a 5 yard swing pass the distance - It's tough to defend all the weapons - Personally I hate prevent defenses unless it is right at the end of the game and the team has to go all the way to beat you ----
I think we got so concerned with containing AE from the edges that we left the middle of the field wide open (for your RB and receivers). App figured that out and adjusted, we didn't adjust to the adjustment = game, set, match.
11) Our special teams are destined for failure; and
12) Appalachian lost to a team that lost to a team that Montana beat by 50 points?
.........
I really don't think App has that much to worry about. I see them winning by a TD or so.
Hope you're right Spideyman. Also, do you thing Richmond's defensive fatigue had anything to do with the ASU offense going wild in the last 10 minutes or was it just execution?xchinscratchx ASU's pace of play did that to a number of teams this year.
