Keith Named Nicholls' Interim Coach, Selection Committee Forms for Coaching Search

THIBODAUX - Nicholls State assistant football coach Kent Keith has been named interim head coach, and a search committee has been formed to select the next head coach of the football program, the University Athletic Department announced today.

An article on the impressive list of names from Nicholls...


There is the lack of a consistent winning tradition. There is the recent news regarding more budget cuts affecting the university. There is the low pay associated with the head coach position. There are just three appearances in the 1-AA playoffs in the 38 year history of the football program. There is a perceived stigma of being off the beaten path geographically.

Despite these aspects, Nicholls State has compiled a very impressive list of applicants for its vacant head coaching position. Jay Thomas was let go from his position as head coach on November 20 after six years on the job. Thomas posted a record of 27-35 in his tenure, including 17-21 in Southland Conference action. The Colonels finished the 2009 season at 3-8 overall.

Sources tell us that Charlie Weatherbie (former ULM Head Coach), James Spady (Grambling State Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line coach), Kent
Keith (Interim Nicholls Head Coach) and Tim Rebowe (Louisiana-Lafayette Linebackers coach) have interviewed. According to ours sources Tim Rebowe
is still the front runner to replace Jay Thomas as the new Head Coach. A new head coach is not expected to be named until after Jan 1.

They've been on Rebowe for a long time...we'll see if it comes to fruition.
