12/1/56:
The Ohio State Buckeyes open St. John Arena, their brand-new $4M basketball home. OSU defeats Butler, 98-82, to presage a 42-year occupancy at the impressive structure, built with no posts to obscure sightlines and a square design (not circular) to ensure every seat is close to the court. The Buckeyes will craft a 427-151 record (.739) at St. John Arena before moving into the more modern Schottenstein Center in 1998. The old gymnasium is still very much in use, though, hosting volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling events along with a pregame concert before every home football game by OSU’s renowned “Best Damn Marching Band in the Land.”
