I thought everyone might find this interesting:

I-AA Championship game received an overnight rating of 1.19. I am not sure what it has been in years past, but this is a pretty strong rating. Here are a few comparisons I was able to pull together for a quick analysis

Compared to other Friday Primetime CFB games this year...

Matchup
PITTSBURGH @ OHIO - 1.57
HOUSTON @ UTEP - 1.06
(22) IOWA STATE @ ARMY - 1.17
PITTSBURGH @ RUTGERS - 1.05
SYRACUSE @ CONNECTICUT - 1.13
COLORADO STATE @ NEW MEXICO - 1.12
TOLEDO @ OHIO - 1.13
RUTGERS @ (23) LOUISVILLE - 1.15
(24) WISCONSIN @ HAWAII - 1.61
LOUISIANA TECH @ (23) FRESNO STATE - 1.02
APPALACHIAN STATE @ NORTHERN IOWA 1.19

Compared to other Programming on 12/16

TEAMS
MIAMI HEAT @ PHILADELPHIA 76ERS - 1.33
WASHINGTON WIZARDS @ LOS ANGELES LAKERS - 1.36
APPALACHIAN STATE 21 @ NORTHERN IOWA - 1.19
PTI - 1.01
SPORTCENTER - 0.89

*NCAA D-IAA Championship received the highest rating of any program on ESPN2 all weekend long.

*The average for E2 Friday Night Games for the year was 1.20

*The total number of households that tuned into the game was 1,059,496

Don't take beating PTI lightly, either.

Thanks for posting the comparisons between that game and other Friday night games...

Now we as fans and the NCAA have to think of ways to better promote the game nationally. I really think I-AA schools should do their part and highlight the I-AA playoffs on their web sites, point to the NCAA site that highlights the I-AA playoffs. That'd help a lot if casual sports fans knew the championship for their level was on...

Wow, that's really pretty good, given the lack of promotion of the game specifically and I-AA in general. Obviously, UNI and App St fans only represent a small portion of that number.

I'd be curious to see other ratings from the playoffs, both this year and in the past.

Sadly true.

What I'd like to see is the I-AA championship game beating some of the minor bowl games. Frankly, it's pretty rancid if people around the country would rather watch something like the New Orleans Bowl or GMAC Bowl (as well as a number of others) than they would watch a championship game at ANY college level.

It would have been #20. I don't think ESPN was included in this list. Everything listed is ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and one from UPN.

This is something ESPN should take advantage of. Even their announcers were pimping the I-AA format for determining a national champion all postseason long. Good stuff for I-AA, IMO. GO CATAMOUNTS!!!

I think having over a million viewers tune in is an accomplishment. Another good measuring stick would be comparing it to the non-BSC bowl games this year. I will try post them once they are available.

Sez who? Where's your info from?

The information is from AC Nielson.

The rating denotes that 1.19% of all households with ESPN2 tuned into the game. Currently that number is around 87MM for ESPN2. Therefore total viewership was just over 1MM.

What is the 03 #?

GtFllsGriz

I think that number is pretty darn good for a game that is played on a Friday night during the holiday season. Most of the "no-name" bowl games are played during the week. Even us I-AA junkies will watch them just because they are playing "football". I don't know how many Christmas shows I can watch so even Toledo looks good.

Just checked the ESPN corporate website.....it stated: ESPN reaches 80 million households, while ESPN2 reaches about 75 million households.

I guess the 75m number could be a little old because I doubt ESPN is very worried about keeping the website updated on a regular bassis....even if 75m is correct, your numbers (households viewing) are not significantly altered.
