View Full Version : AE eligibility

It would certainly be fitting that AE go out with a NC. Not that he is lacking a NC but he is easily a top 5 QB's to ever play I-AA (FCS) football and each week at this point could be his final game. Doesn't matter what happens at the next level he has been worth the $ of admission in every game he ever appeared. As a fan of a program whose formula is transfer + 2 and out (sometimes NFL) my hat is off to Appalachian State for recruiting possibly the best QB to play at this level.

The only BAD thing about seeing him in person is not normally having an instant replay, except on the scoreboard. On TV you can back it up and play it again and again to see if what you think you saw is actually what you saw.

Not to continue the Armanti ballwashing, but his performance against Michigan was nothing short of absolutely remarkable. I was more impressed by his poise than his athleticism, oddly enough.

As remarkable an athlete as AE is, his head for the game is even more remarkable-- on-field leadership, defensive pattern recognition, field vision, and creativity. Lot of guys can throw and run, but it's the thinking/reacting part of his game that makes him outstanding, IMO.

As a Umas fan it was tough seeing him pick the Minutemen apart in the NC game a few years ago so i am glad he is gone. While there is a lot of talking to do about the games next week I am curious to hear what App fans think of the team that will be coming back next year. Seemed like they had a little trouble early in the season when AE was injured, any blue chippers coming in? I'm not calling App a 1 trick pony but it's hard to think they can be as good next year without him. Is the next QB a running guy as well?

Yeah, Travaris Cadet is a player in the style of Armanti, but bigger. I believe I read that he's faster than AE, but he's still young and hasn't demonstrated (to me anyway) that he's quite at the level we'd like at this point. You don't replace a player like AE - you just hope you can get someone close. Cadet will take the reigns next year, but it's going to take him a little time to develop the confidence passing and the patience that AE has really shown over the last couple of seasons. AE had "happy feet" a couple of years ago, where he'd take a quick look for receivers and then just tuck and run. Looking at his stats (pass vs. run) over the last two years, you can see he's really developed into a much more efficient passer. Cadet is very much where AE was, so I hope the ASU faithful can be patient enough to allow him to develop - he has a heck of a lot of potential IMHO.

I think Armanti may be the most decorated FCS player ever. Likely to make it a second straight Payton this year and has a shot at his third title. You just can't say enough for what he's done for the whole University. After we lost Richie I wondered when we would have another one. It didn't take but one year. I remember sitting in Carter Finley when he took his first reps in a Mountaineer Uniform and I though who is this guy? He is just something else.

If you are talking about the game ASU played against NC State, Trey Elder started and played that whole game at Carter Finley. It was the year after Richie graduated and Trey inherited the starting role. Trey started the next game against JMU in Boone and was injured. That is when AE came in and never lost his starting position. I have heard it said many times "if Armanti had played that game, we may have beaten State".

ASU should be very good again next season losing only 6 of the 22 starters. On offense, other than AE, we lose 1 OL, & 1 back up WR. The defense will see 2 starting and 1 back up DT's, middle LB, and 1 DB graduate. All specialists return. Last year's recruiting class may have been the single best group of athletes ever brought into Boone. We need some help on the interior of the D-line and I'd like to see one transfer brought in to shore that unit up. We need to build depth on the O-line and the staff has got off to a fast start getting several high quality early comittments.

I was sitting in the State section and they were all laughing at his size. But my prediction in June 2006 from app message board came true
>>>>>>>
The problem I see with Elder as the ASU quarterback is that it is built completely around the quarterback and his ability to run the option. Elder is not as mobile a quarterback as Richie and he showed in the championship that he isn't capable up handling pressure or the big game. Either way...I don't see Elder as the starter for the next two years. I wouldn't be completely shocked if by the end of the year Armanti Edwards was taking the snaps. His senior year he passed for 2,000 yards and ran for over 1,100 and had 17 passing td's and 12 rushing....sounds familiar to a recent ASU QB. I like the stats from the two QB's ASU are bringing in. The other guy CoCo Hillary tallied 3,100 yards of total offense and 37 touchdowns his senior year and Edwards has a 40-yard dash of 4.5 seconds. They both are pure athletes, so maybe they put them somewhere else...but if they are keeping to the same ASU offense as usual...it seems like these two guys were brought in to compete early. And I know Elder was great in high school and actually had better stats..but he just didn't look comfortable running the option last year.

Yeah, and to think he seriously considered GSU before Van Gorder showed up; one of the many ways the BVG seemed to do all he could to destroy our program, intentionally or not. What a great problem it would have been to have to figure out how to use both Armanti and Jayson Foster at the same time!

This is from the Savannah Morning News' GSU beat writer Donald Heath on 10/22/09:
"It could have happened. During Armanti Edwards’ teleconference Wednesday, he talked about being recruited by Georgia Southern.
But when Brian VanGorder was hired, Armanti decided to go with Appalachian State, where he’s quarterbacked the Mountaineers to two national championships and three Southern Conference titles."

Unfortunately Edwards probably would have wasted a year just like BVG caused Jayson to do; hate to say it, but under the circumstances if Armanti did actually consider us he certainly made the right choice.

Don't know what GSU fans you are referring to, but I certainly have never inferred that. I said he seriously considered it, and I do think that having scheduled a visit and only changing his mind when BVG was hired fits that category. If you run a two QB system you really don't have one.

Wow - impressive prediction - I do think you were a little hard on Trey and handling the pressure - we wouldn't have won NC #1 without him bringing us back against Furman in the semis ----
I was prob a little hard on Trey but I thought he got lucky with that first pass. He is where he belongs now. I have always had disagreements with Jerry, but I love how the man takes care of his own.
