The only ASU player left off would be Cline - 2nd team WR over CoCo IMO. He is the Wes Welker of the SoCon/FCS. Doesn't look like much, but catches the ball and before you know it has 100 yard game.

And 9 guys on the all conference team coming back for us next year. xeekx

Congratulations to all players on their superior play this year. SoCon seems to be getting some criticism this year, but it seems that other than App and sorta Elon everyone else was just slicing each other up.

This list just about gets it right. I would have to put up Matt Cline in there somewhere. He made very few highlight reel caliber catches or TD's but was always the most valuable WR.

Acitelli - fine job and makes 4 out of five years this award goes to an App linesman.

I'm sure gonna miss all of these Senior All-SoCon players for us next year!! They have been the foundation of our success and can leave very proud of the hard work they've put in the last four years and the top-10 program they've helped to create. They took a struggling program and delivered the first ever playoff appearance in school history.

Mocs had 1 pre-season selection and ended up with 6 post-season (not including freshmen)...including defensive player of the year.

Not too shabby for a first year coach and a team coming off a one-win season.

The last time the Mocs had a defensive player of the year was 1990...and that was also the last year the Mocs had a coach of the year.

Just goes to show, no matter how good the athlete's, you still gotta have someone to coach 'em up.

That I do agree with. Not to take anything away from what Moore has done, but to take the Mocs to a 4-4 finish in SoCon play and have them finish tied for 4th in the conference in Huesman's first year is incredible. And he did it with MUCH less talent than Moore has. The award should definitely be his and his alone.

It's amazing to see how far this program has come in the past four years, and much of it is owed to Coach Lembo and these seniors. You will be sorely missed, but thank you so much for all you have done.

And another sign of how far the program has come? This year we finish with 14 players being named to an All-SoCon team. 7 1st team All-SoCon, 4 2nd team All-SoCon and 3 All-Freshmen team.

I think Lembo deserves a look. Especially now that they are in the playoffs. He had to get over that hump, and he has. I'm glad AE is gone, maybe Riddle can get some first team recognition next year. Tough to compete with Armanti!xbowx

I agree with the above

another thing, coach of the year is usually given to the coach who usually exceeds expectations, not necessarily the coach who wins it all.

For instance, Dabo Swinney should be the coach of the year in the ACC (I don't even like Clemson), he took a team that wasn't supposed to be good and won the division. Paul Johnson is a good coach but he did not exceed expectations like Dabo did.

I'll agree with you and the youngterrier. Huesman should have been it, and if it was shared, it should have been with lembo. They were the ONLY teams that performed above expectations. UTC was 8th I think and Elon was 3rd in preseason predictions.

The fact that chatty's coach did more with less should not overshadow what Moore has done, stay with me here. Moore has won the conference this year for the fifth straight time, and the "better players" that were mentioned below were recruited by him! So, don't you think the fact he recruited better players and went undefeated including a convincing win on the road over a much hyped upstart. Moore is your COY, but so is Huesman. They got it right for once.

coaching is different from playing, your judged by your performance and if you perform well you get named all conference. If you perform decent, it's less likely.

Isn't it remotely possible that their performances were comparable? Can it be that Moore would have won 6 games with Huesman's team and Huesman would have won 9 with Moore's?

I honestly don't know. I think I would have voted for Huesman, given the chance. But it looks like both coaches have valid cases.

Adam Mims JR
84 receptions 878 yards 11.9 yards per catch 4 touchdowns… finished second in yards per game, fourth in receptions per game, fifth in all purpose yards

Kadarron Anderson SO
122 tackles… finished second in total tackles

Ryan Steed SO
finished 30 in tackles… 59 , finished first in passes defended 11 breakups - 4 interceptions, finished tied for third in interceptions with 4

I think Mims or Cooper deserved the 1st team WR over Andre Roberts. They both out performed Roberts in the WR yardage category & Cooper out performed him in receptions as well and (not that it matters for the WR position) Mims had more total purpose yards. I think Roberts is a great receiver, but, not as good as Mims and Cooper this year.

Coach Huesmans' reaction to the prospect of being named coach of the year...

Russ Huesman didn’t want to hear it. Asked Sunday afternoon if he’d considered the possibility he might be named the Southern Conference coach of the year, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s first-year football coach shrugged off the possibility.

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” he said, looking uncomfortable with the prospect.

Tuesday, the SoCon announced the coaches’ postseason awards and all-conference teams, and Huesman was named co-coach of the year with Appalachian State’s Jerry Moore. In addition, UTC senior defensive end Josh Beard was named the defensive player of the year.

It’s the first time UTC has had either a coach of the year or player of the year since 1990, when Buddy Nix and defensive lineman Troy Boeck were honored. The Mocs’ six All-SoCon players are the most also since 1990.

I think all of our D players were deserving even though our overall defense was suspect.....Gainey actually had a better season statistically than Giilbert but it was likely because teams threw away from Gilbert a lot. Our early problems on D seemed to come from the Bandit position and Nickel as well as a lack of getting into the backfield. Those have been shored up with Frazier and McDuffie stepping up and a more aggressive approach to the pass rush with Fletcher and Tanyi. I expect to see McDuffie's name on these lists in the future

It's a shame that Terrell Hudgins is the same year as AE...I think he really deserved recognition for the year he has had, but everyone has Edwards tunnel vision when it comes down to offensive of the year. At least Riddle has another year without AE to maybe get a nod, but Hudgins won't get the recognition he merits.

Hudgins is a great receiver and true FCS/SoCon fans give him all the props he deserves. A WR, however, will be hard pressed to overcome a top-notch QB. Edwards averaged 340+ yards per game and was responsible for 26 TDs.....even Hudgins numbers can't top that.

The FCS should have awards similar to the FBS awards show that recognizes the best position players of the year. Its tough to leave out so many worthy players of postseason awards with only the Payton, Buchannon, and COY awards. Hudgins would be the runaway for the FCS verion of the Bilitnekof. Could even have the award named after him since he broke all of Jerry Rice's records and will go down as the best WR ever in the FCS.

Thanks for putting that into words better than I did! The problem with the current FCS awards is that they ask us to compare apples with oranges. I have no doubt that Edwards is deserving, and that is not the point I was trying to make. QB and WR are two completely different positions, but QB will always win out for awards. If you have one of the best ever QBs and one of the best ever WRs in one season, you shouldn't have to pick between them.

Petition for the Terrell Hudgins Receiver of the Year Award, anyone? Maybe T-Mobile would be willing to sponsor :)

Overall I think it's a good list. Agree with other Apps, Cline should have been in there somewhere. When I first heard that Jerry was co-coach of the year with Russ Huesman I wondered why it wasn't Huesman's alone. He has done an incredible job with the Mocs. I would have been very okay with him winning and I am sure JM would say the same.

JM is also deserving. Yes he won the conference with superior talent but he recruitted that talent. Also, App started the season with two losses, three is you count last year's playoff fiasco. Many App fans on this board were reeling and lots of other were jumping on the App is going down bandwagon....this means you Phoenixman A lot of teams would have been reeling as well but App didn't miss a beat. App has lots of seasoned talent but they are still young men and JM has to get some credit for helping keep their heads on straight. Jerry is the Man!!

I think we should just cut to the chase and make all the App fans on AGS happy. Just make the App St. first team the SoCon first team, and name JM coach of the year each year. It would save some time.

Brent Russell, the only freshman on the All Socon list, should have been first teamer. This guy is an absolute stud. Also, Dion Dubose was robbed. Other than those two, GSU had nothing.

One more freshman on the list 2nd team. Joshua Williams DL

if it's done the most with the least then give it to Chattanoogas coach, but if it's give it to the best coach who's done the best (including recruiting which is a big part of coaching) Coach Moore is the most deserving

Under that Logic, Pete Carrol deserves national coach of the year, every year (except this year)

I would probably have voted for Huesman because he has done a pretty remarkable job in only one year. I think he'll turn Chattanooga into a SoCon contender before too long.

I am very suprised he isn't a finalist for the Robinson award.

If the Richmond coach should for some reason go to Virginia as their new coach would Huesman be a possibility to be Richmonds new head coach? Not trying to start something, I was just wondering.

I doubt it. He's a UTC alum and played for them in the late '70's and early '80's. I would think he's happy there unless he gets an offer from FBS school as a coordinator or a head coach.

You are probably right. Think UTC might offer him a raise?

Adrian Mora???

No. Mora choked down the stretch. He doesn't have an elite leg either. He's money from 40 in, but he's very iffy over that.

I would expect Lembo to be considered before Huesman.

I don't recall any App fans on this board stating that any more App players deserved consideration, just that Hillary should not have been second team and Cline should have...in fact I think you would read that some players (Jorden, Vitaris) did NOT belong on the team.
