CSN So South: A Big South Thriller and Two Playoff Teams

Going into the final Saturday of the 2009 regular season, three teams in the So South region possessed playoff aspirations. One was a lock, one was a fairly good certainty, and one was a bubble team. In the end, two out of three made it.

Appalachian State (the lock) won a close game against rival Western Carolina to wrap up the SoCon’s automatic bid.

Elon (the fairly good certainty) made the long trip to Birmingham, Ala., and beat Samford to obtain its first FCS playoff bid.

Meanwhile, the Big South Conference will have to wait to qualify for an auto bid next year for its second playoff berth ever. Liberty (the bubble team) lost a hard-fought thriller at Stony Brook to wash away any chances at a playoff spot.
