Not quite unanimously, though. 27/28 1st-place votes. Somebody voted for Miguel Cabrera. xconfusedx
Anyway, congrats to Joe on a truly awesome season. xnodx

From Sam Borden of the LoHud Yankees Blog (http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2009/11/23/mauer-wins-in-a-rout-tex-second-jeter-third/)
According to Newsday’s Ken Davidoff, the writer who voted Cabrera first is Keizo Konishi of Kyodo News, based in Seattle.
So there you have it.... xscanx

Word on the street in the shadows of downtown Minneapolis. Yankees have offered $30 million per season behind the scenes. Mauer is ready to accept $20 Million a season over 10 years with the Twins, and the extra $10 million per season difference from what the Yankees offered would go towards keeping or adding players to make the Twins a Championship contender.

Well. technically, the Yankees already contribute a good amount of money to the Twins and other under-paying franchises. Problem is even if the Yankees game the Twins an extra $10 million a year...they would not use it properly. They have plenty of $$ within the organization yet they have always chosen to refuse to use it.
The Twins get what their ownership pays for it...which isn't much once the players get to super star level.

For two decades the Twins played in a stadium that gave them much fewer revenue streams then any team in the MLB. The highest the Twins payroll could go and still break even is around $70 million. I know the owner is rich but he didn't get his money by being stupid, few owners in any league will take a 10-20 million dollar hit per year.
Most people didn't know that the Vikings got all the corporate suite money for Twins games.

The new stadium has changed their spending level. We'll see what they do with it.
