Looked for this thread and did not see it.
That said, I'm excited to watch this game in person with my son and my brother and his son. Go Griz!
I think this is going to be a tough game as SDSU has been very well regarded this year. Only head to head I could find was Cal Poly. We beat Cal Poly early in the season and the Jack lost, but I heard they did not have their starting QB. Did I hear that correctly?

There has been a lot of comparisons of SDSU to MSU. Strong D, specifically against the run, and a pretty decent running game. So hopefully Mariani can give us field position all day, while our passing game spreads the field and gives them fits. I'd say we win this game 75% of the time at home, probably pretty close to 50/50 at a neutral location.

45-24 Montana. 14-21 Griz down at halftime.

I like the matchup. Minnett is a stud, but that is strength on strength in terms of their run O against our run D. I would be much more worried if we were playing a really good passing offense. They have a good D, but did give up 34 points to SIU. Its gonna be a real physical game, but I think our depth will be too much for them...

There are a few Jacks' fans here. The comparison to MSU's defense was made on our board, and a few people looked up the stats. It's not a good comparison:
SDSU is #16 in the nation in total defense while Montana St. is #61.
SDSU is #1 in the nation in pass efficiency defense while Montana St. is 82.
SDSU is #22 in the nation in pass defense while Montana St. is #113.
SDSU is #23 in the nation in rush defense while Montana St. is #7.
SDSU is #5 in the nation in scoring defense while Montana St. is #51.
The rush defense argument is skewed because we faced the #4, #8, #13, and #19 rush offenses in the nation in SIU, NDSU, UNI, and Cal Poly while Montana St. hasn't played a single team in the top 20.
Bottom line: Our defense is a lot better than MSU's defense.

We are definately underdogs coming into WaGriz Stadium, but I would be surprised if Montana scores 35 (let alone the 42 the other poster mentioned) against our D. The only way they do that is if our offense turns the ball over a ton and gives up some points off of turnovers - much like what happened against Southern Illinois.

I like the match up, and I think it will be closer than most people think it will. SDSU has a great defense, a solid running game, and are very sound in their fundamentals. I think we will come up short, but it will be a trench fight, the kind of game teams just grind out. Looking forward to it!

SIU scoring 34 was more of an aberration than the rule in terms of the Jacks D giving up points. It is also noted that one of SIU's TD was a pick 6 and another TD came on a drive that started at the SDSU 6 yard line (due to our punter dropping a snap). Add in the fact the SIU had a running QB (our kryptonite) that Montana doesn't seem to possess, I would be surprised if Montana got more than 2 offensive TD's against SDSU's defense. I'll go with a 20-17 Jacks victory.

I like the match up quite a bit, not because I think it will be a walk in the park, but because I like watching good football. We haven't played a team with as good of a D as you guys, but the only team you have played who is on our level is SIU. UNI was a good win at the time, but honestly, I think they may have been the most over rated team in the FCS. They didn't have a single good win, and they lost to every real good team they played. The way I see it, on a neutral field, this one would probably be a toss up. At WA-GRIZ I like the Griz by 7-10...but neither team scores over 30..So lets call it 20-14. I think your defense is good enough to keep our offense from lighting up the score board, but I also think that when comparing SDSU's O vs. UM's D..I gotta give the edge to UM's D. Anyway, low scoring game with a lot of defense, and a few big plays thanks to Mariani that bust it open for your Montana Grizzlies.

We've only been held under 31 points twice this year and in both of those games we played extremely poorly. Against Davis, we didn't start playing until we were down 10-0 in the third quarter and against Idaho State we turned the ball over like crazy. I don't doubt that this may be the best D we have played all year, but we always seem to find a way to score points.
This matchup reminds me alot of the quarterfinal game against SIU three years ago. Really good running game and D, but a little lacking as far as passing offense goes.

The Idaho State game is , well, an Idaho State game.
Like I have said over and over if anyone on the ECB would play at Idaho State they would know why the Griz and every other team that goes in there is tentative when they play and never really go full force.
Every single game that I have seen in the past 15 years there, there has been at least one nasty injury with broken bones.
Thankfully this year it was not anyone on the Griz (like back in '07) but the player for ISU did get a nasty leg break at the game this year.
It is just plain nasty some of the broken bones that have been seen there.

EDIT: not overlooking this game though. SDSU will be a handful and fired up. They are used to cold weather...so that won't factor into this

None of your opponents are in the Top 20 in rush offense. That is what that particular statistic shows and what he is referring to. The premise being, you haven't played a top offensive threat on the ground, even though Montana is 25 and you held them under 100, which is admirable no doubt. Here are the Rushing Offense Ranks for all Big Sky Teams:
Montana - 25
Montana State - 48
Eastern Washington - 56
Northern Arizona - 64
Weber State - 73
Sacramento State - 83
Northern Colorado - 93
Portland State - 95
Idaho State - 118

Also your Total Defense is #61. Ours is #16. That's a big gap.

Let my try.. Maybe they have the top offenses because they are playing against the bottom defenses, and in the case of Idaho St the team at the every bottom, which Montana only scored 12 points on.
Total Defense
Portland State - 107th
Northern Arizona - 100th
Cal Poly - 102nd
Eastern Washington - 109th
Sacremento State - 116th
Weber State - 79th
Idaho State - 118th
Northern Colorado - 87th
Montana State - 61st
Montana - 58th
Excluding the teams in transition, Montana is the ONLY team in the top half of all the FCS in total defense in the Big Sky, by ONE spot.
Montana had their bad game against one of the worst teams in FCS and still won, SDSU had their bad game against the #3 seed and lost.

This game reminds me of our Wofford draw. Because of regional seeding this clearly is not a first round game. Bad news for us coming off of a physical Brawl. Another tough D, but not a great offense. At the end of the day Montana has to protect the ball. Turnover margin will be the game. The quaterbacks cannot make mistakes. It will come down to a final field goal. 16 to 13 win leading to a Big Sky rematch for the second year in a row in the second round.

For most teams it's the only way they can break even for the year. Fans like to pretend that it means their team has balls but we know it means they don't have enough fans.
App, McNeese and so forth excluded of course, they need it for recruiting.

Did you ever stop to think that Montana may be part of the reason that the other teams SOS is higher? If Montana played itself I'm sure it's SOS would improve as well.
Also, please tell me how the fact that the other teams in the BSC playing FBS teams and loosing to them made them potentially better playoff teams.
Perhaps you should petition the NCAA to require teams to play an FBS team in order to qualify for the playoffs otherwise they are probably not worthy of competing.
I believe MT also had a comparitively weak SOS in the BSC last year. They really struggled in the playoffs compared to all the other teams (not including Richmond).xrolleyesx

Oh, and like the other guy said - could it be that the defenses are just that bad in the Big Sky? I guess we will find out where it falls out on Saturday. I expect a defensive struggle and a battle of field position.
That's why I'd predict a Griz win: we'll win the field position game. Mariani's a top-three returner in the country, and he will burn you if you dare kick to him.

This is one that Montana could easily lose. Montana has yet to be tested. Its closest test was Idaho State, which Montana almost lost. Montana has a lot to prove to the rest of the world, especially since Montana didn't play an FBS team this year. We wonder if Montana can beat teams that are equal to, if not better, than they. SDSU 24 Montana 21.
We heard this same poppycock last season. Don't you people ever learn. #1 JMU folks were talking about an auto win at their house. What a shock for them. xlolx

It's happened before, (#5 SIU @ #1 Delaware) and UM seeded at #1 was a revenue-based decision.

Sagarin is full of it. We're underdogs. Montana has been in the playoffs about 500 kabillion times. This is our first time. They have a big-time home field advantage that we'll need to overcome.
That doesn't mean we can't win. Just means we're underdogs.

not really sure you can say montana wasnt tested.
17-10 @ uc davis.... stopping them with an int in the endzone
41-34 @ NAU.... stopping them with an int in the endzone in overtime
41-34 vs EWU..... scoring the winning td with just over a minute remaining (on 4 and goal)
12-10 @ ISU.... shouldnt have been that close but still won with a last minute drive to win with a field goal..
that looks like a few tests to me. shows they can find ways to win when needed.

I'll tell you what, MSU bobcats have a really good D. They choose to stop Chase and did, period! But could not stop the rest of the O. I listened to the coaches show last night and Bobby said looking at the Jackrabbits is like looking in the mirror. Great back, big o-line, a D that plays straight up and does not have to over commet to pass or rush, and special teams that are overlooked because of ball control they rarely have punt returns. I read a stat over on egriz 41 points scored in the second half against them the WHOLE SEASON. The Griz are not over looking the bunnies.

This is why I love the FCS. This is a alot of heartfelt debate about who is better and each fan breaks the numbers down to suite their preconceived decision based mostly on team and conference loyalties. Interesting to see how creative some fans from both sides can be. All in good fun because in the end it matters NOT. We get to decide this one the way it should be. On the field.
And if the Jacks walk out of WaGriz (have you heard about our stadium and the crowd noise ;-)) with a victory they will have earned it. I will be disappointed if that happens but like all the Griz fans, I will congratulate them and wish them luck in the rest of the Championship Series.

Hah, I think that goes for any student section though. I sat in Pitt's student section back when my sister was going there (and I was about 10) and...wow...talk about an eye-opening experience.
I definitely get a little...lot more vocal when I'm in the student section compared to sitting somewhere else in a stadium.

That is a super cool picture. As well, 40,000 is nothing to sneeze at, but I would be willing to bet that WA-GRIZ is going to be much louder this weekend. Here is my rationale, I would appreciate others view on this as well. Anyway here is my reasoning:
1. FBS schools don't get excited to play an FCS squad, and consequently neither do the fans. FCS is still by and large Division II in casual fans minds
2. They haven't been having a good year, so again the fans aren't going to be especially jacked up for the season.
3. This is a playoff game between two great teams. The anticipation, excitement, and enthusiasm will be bar none. This is a huge game. The crowd will be much more involved.
4. The Minnesota fans are not behind their team. I read a SDSU poster on the SDSU board say that the only time the game was very loud was when they were booing their QB and when the sun came out for about 5 minutes.
5. Stadium Design: The Minnesota stadium holds 40,000 people but has a really shallow grade on the seats. In addition the seats are separated from the field b a fair distance. WA GRIZ on the other hand has a very steep grade, the field is actually a bit underground and so sound gets trapped in and just echoes off of the opposite sides of the stadium....making it deafening. The sound down on the field has been measured and is the same decibel level as an f15 fighter jet taking off. As well, the crowd is literally about 5 feet behind the benches, and about 15 from the field. It is going to be insane, and any Jackrabbit fans that come to the game are going to have a great time. I would post a picture, but there are about 50,000 WA GRIZ pics on AGS, some people don't appreciate theslight nuance of WA-GRIZ's post modern food court and semi futuristic bleacher design, thats the only reason I can think of anyway. I don't doubt that SDSU will be able to handle the crowd noise. That being said, I was at the Minn game and it was about as quiet as Bobcat Stadium after last weekends beat down by the Griz. If SDSU wins this game, they will definitely have deserved it. The Griz are a very very solid football team. If UM gets solid QB play, they will be difficult to stop because the running game is extremely solid. There is a reason Chase Reynolds has scored as many TD's as he has over the past 2 years. He is a tough runner and deceptively fast.
Marc Mariani is just incredible. Period. If he isn't playing Sundays next year I will be shocked. Dan Beaudin and Steve Pfhaeler are underrated TE's who do a good job blocking as well. SDSU will have its hands full on defense and the Grizzly defense is starting to come together quite nicely as well.
All in all, I expect a good game, but give the edge to the Griz at home.

I'm sure it's a great atmosphere. It's probably the loudest place we'll play this year.
I would argue that the FargoDome, with 19,000 people indoors and a rivalry game for the Dakota Marker is probably pretty comparable. I've been there for SDSU/NDSU games, and it's as loud as the Metrodome in there when the crowd gets cranked up in that relatively small space.

The committee must have felt some guilt and gave the teams that should have been seeded above the Griz easier games...xlolx

SDSU has played at Montana before. SDSU has also played in the Fargodome and the UNIdome. I don't think they'll have any problems with the crowd.
I have to agree, SDSU is going to handle the crowd noise fine. If the griz fans of yesterday show up and start yelling it might be something to hear. Either I lost some of my hearing from all the games or it just seems lacking of late. The noise is still good but it use to be something you had to experience. You could just feel it everywhere through your body. Sure long for those days and hope we can get back to that environment. Hope to meet some of you SDSU fans and have a beer. GO GRIZ

It doesn't surprise me that SDSU is giving UM fits. Their offense is a lot like EWU in that it is very efficient in its passing game. Their running back is a lot like Reynolds, and their defense is unspectacular but very solid.

SDSU is just crushing Montana up front. Couple that with the Jacks making the plays and getting the turnovers and this is a great effort by the Jacks.
Montana might have 14 points, but they barely have that in total offensive yards I think.
I sure hope the Jacks don't go into a shell and play not to lose in the second half. Need to keep running the ball. Minnett has something like 25 carries already.

The Jacks defense is good against the pass. They sometimes struggle with a mobile QB. From what limited things I have seen from the defenses you mentioned they are very good as well. I sure hope that we will be able to compare them on the field and not on paper! That would mean we get by the first round.
