That was the right call. They made the call because the nose tackle for SC State came through the offensive line which means the foul was encroachment, not offsides. If it was an offsides call, the play would've been able to keep going. Encroachment is different.

gotcha...I thought they called offsides..but with this game...you sneeze and you miss something

RattlerFan70

That was clearly a fumble, bad call refs... It should be tied up....

Yea our red zone offense is horrendous, Armanti running in the redzone is on of our biggest strengths. Hopefully he is sandbagging and makes them adjust to him not running.

If we get past SCSU, I bet App fans won't be quite so confident against Richmond (or Elon) next week.

Blowdryer near me > TV sound, no clue what happened.

Watching this game and the announcers didn't have a clue, SCS kicked off at the 7 yd line so there must have been two penalties.

T-Dog

We're obviously sandbagging because we're tired of ESPN picking us for TV and thus tired of noon games.

I love it when the announcers, who either didn't play or did play and at one time did the same thing, rip college kids for being excited about making a huge, potentially season changing play! Just got back.....WOW! Sometimes you gotta be lucky, although a botched free-play call took back an early touchdown. Armanti was definitely not full strength and during press conference stated that the coaches did not allow him to run. Devon Moore also got hurt

Matt Cline had the play of the game kncking the ball out on the fumble return so App got it back with a fresh set of downs.....

Crowd played a huge roll in the fact that SCSU took their timeouts early.

That said - we play like that on offense next week and we lose big

I don't think the "official" attendance is correct. There seemed to be a lot more people at the game: 17,000-18,000 IMO.

Both teams D played well, everything else was almost unbearable to watch. I heard the coaches told Armanti not to run...so he played timed and it threw off his game.

It appeared AE had been instructed not to run. At one point, when he did take off running for a bit, he slid head first instead of feet first so as to protect the knee. Later in the second half, he cut loose a little more though not much. From the postgame interviews, it sounded like one of the goals was to protect the knee as much as possible today.

AE looked about 80% today. SCSU also did a great job keying on the pass rush when AE was eliminated as a factor in the run game.

What a horrible game for everyone. Both teams, the ref crew, and the announcers......everyone stunk it up, I was half way surprised the ESPNU feed didn't go out. If it had, it would have completed my thoughts about everything.

ASU had better get it ironed out in practice this week, although I hear Richmond had a stinker too. Montana I'm not even gonna get started on.

Well, I'm going to describe the flip side of the same coin. Both defenses played great today. If App sees a better defense with better athletes than SC State during the rest of the playoffs, then I'll be surprised.

I agree that AE did not have his best game - boy, what an understatement!

The announcers seemed fine to me, ISP radio that is - I have yet to watch the ESPNU broadcast that I have taped.

But, the referees - PEUUWHEE!! They were flippin' awful. That defensive offsives call where the ref blew the play dead & called back Quick's TD was absolutely horrible! I understand they were CAA refs. The CAA can have them back. I don't want them.

He got sacked twice where he normally would have eluded the play.....he did break off a couple of runs but they were very "un-Armanti" like. What I mean by that is that he had a lot of daylight and open field and rather than terrorize the DBs with shifty moves he settled for yards and a slide. Also since he was not allowed to roll out and give the option of running he was more of a "pocket passer" which at times he looked really good at (threaded the needle on quite a few balls over the middle) and at times looked awful at (plenty of balls into coverage). There were at least 3 dropped passes if not more and once Moore was hurt we had no running game - all SCSU had to do was key on the blitz and force reads downfield.

That said - our defense looked TREMENDOUS...what was our achilles heel early in the season was our strength.

James I must say when I saw the play from the stands I thought one of our players was unabated to the qb...when I looked at the game on dvr he was..off the left tackle side passed the offensive tackle. Had the play resumed and AE got hurt the fans would've been pissed..refs made made a good call

Took my 8-year old to her first App game today, and she thoroughly enjoyed it. We sat on the upper deck on the "visitor" side for the warmth. Wind was stiff and the windmill was cranking through the first half but settled down later in the day. SCSU brought about a thousand band members and, not to take anything away from the App band, put on an excellent half-time performance. My first trip to the new digs and they are impressive. Home side looked to be about 2/3 full, so the 12k attendance doesn't seem unreasonable.

I guess most of you watched the game, and probably saw it better than I did, but a couple things:

SCSU was ready to play this game. Their defense played exceptionally well. By the second quarter, we were discussing the fact that AE was not running, and SCSU realized it too. That killed the option run and pretty much the whole run game. They were able to ignore AE and key on the back, or blitz w/o worrying he'd burn them on designed QB draws. In the post-game, Moore pretty much confirmed that SCSU figured out AE wasn't running by the second quarter. Someone asked AE how he felt, and he said he was fine.

What happened on the offsides that should have been a TD in the first quarter? Crowd (self included) thought we had a free play; TD to Quick.

I agree w/ those that say "celebration" penalties are too strict. OTOH, knowing that the refs will flag you, how in the world do you do a flip in the endzone knowing you're going to put your team in a hole in a close game? Not thinking about the game....

Our defense played well again. Didn't see a bunch of missed tackles, and SCSU absolutely could not run it. Even when receivers were open & caught the ball, they were tackled right away.

Coach Pough said crowd noise caused the botched snap on the FG, and I believe I heard Moore say the crowd forced SCSU to call their TO's in the second half, so my daughter will be delighted to hear she helped win the game when she gets up tomorrow.

Hopefully we give Richmond a dose of what we got last year next week. I'm looking forward to it!

If not paired with App, SCSU would have had a home game. They would have had a higher bid over anyone but App or Montana.

Still think full seeding or opening bids before pairing would be better, but can't fix it this year, its done.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you there. Our defense was swarming and pumped the whole game... our offense, not so much. They looked intense but hampered, in the sense that Armanti was clearly not able to run the game plan he wanted to and we had a few dropped balls. However, all in all, our team was pumped up it counted and I definitely did not think that they were playing w/o emotion or intensity, from either side.

Re-watch SCSU's first drive and tell me they looked energized. If the offense was focused they wouldn't have had all of those turnovers. We can agree to disagree but I didn't see that fire. And celebrating after an interception isn't being fired up... it's just celebrating.

Some interesting quotes for the ASU vs SCSU Game: Build Up, Game Time and Post ASU Victory...

SC State had better get all the points they can in the first half. App is a second half team and WILL come seam rolling out of the locker room. The second half has been our almost all year. SCSU will put up a good fight but I see them losing 35-28. To all coming to Boone, have a safe trip and WEAR PLENTY OF LAYERS. I cannot stress how cold that wind coming off the mountain is. Again, LAYERS...

I believe McNeese was more difficult. Equal runningbacks, McNeese had a better quarterback and tight ends. App just has to play fundamental defense and let AE loose.

App State 35, SCSU 14.

If he is heathly, we score in the 40's, if not and he can only pass, than we score in the low 30's. I don't think SC State will score more than 24 or so, if that. And that's only because we take them out of their game by scoring quickly in the beginning of the game. That's not a slight against the Bulldogs, but if you are behind by two or three TD's, they have to adjust and that's not easy to do.

wow.....take AE out of the game plan?? Not real sure how a team does that when he has the ball every single snap. Im sure the rest of FCS would like to hear your secret. They didn't exactly come up with a plan last year to take him out of the game...433 yards passing. Trying to beat AE is not how you beat APP.

while SCSU does have a good defense, they werent the #1 ranked defense like elon was. and app shredded the #1 defense in the 1st half.

Best wishes trying to take superman out of the game plan.

If FCS had replay SC State would have the ball...wow

Wait, that wasn't ruled a fumble?

Rough call. Gotta hope this doesn't break the game.

Looks like we just got the benefit of a bad call. I hate when that happens.

That was the right call. They made the call because the nose tackle for SC State came through the offensive line which means the foul was encroachment, not offsides. If it was an offsides call, the play would've been able to keep going. Encroachment is different.

That was clearly a fumble, bad call refs... It should be tied up....

Watching this game and the announcers didn't have a clue, SCS kicked off at the 7 yd line so there must have been two penalties.

Wow, Couch Pough has some serious cojones... Play to win... xthumbsupx

BAD SNAP TD ASU!!!!

Congratulations to South Carolina State on a great game and a great season! Go Apps! You'll have to be a lot better than this weekend to beat Elon/Richmond!

Great game Bulldogs. This is a match-up that should have never happened in the first round. SCSU should have been at home today playing someone else.

SCSU choked at the end...it should've been 16-13 SCSU...

Just got back.....WOW! Sometimes you gotta be lucky...

Crowd played a huge roll in the fact that SCSU took their timeouts early.

That said - we play like that on offense next week and we lose big
