CELEBRITY PRO-AM TOURNAMENT
Golf legend Arnold Palmer and University of South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier have committed to participate in their first Hootie & the Blowfish Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am Tournament.
"This is something I wanted to have happen for a long time," tournament director Paul Graham said of Palmer's commitment, which was facilitated by the band's offer to perform during events at his Bay Hill Invitational tournament in March in Florida.
The 12th annual Monday After the Masters tournament will be played April 10 at Barefoot Resort's Dye Club. The event raised $425,000 for charity in 2005, breaking the 2004 record of $400,000.
The tournament has flourished since being drawn to the Grand Strand from the Charleston area in 2003 by a sponsorship offer from marketing cooperative Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. It has set a record for proceeds every year since.
Funds this year were distributed to the Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation, South Carolina Junior Golf Association, First Tee Program of Spartanburg, South Carolina Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Fishhouse Foundation of New Hampshire ($10,000), and $50,000 is earmarked for a junior golf facility in Charleston.
In addition to Spurrier and Palmer, Graham said the event has received verbal commitments for 2006 from actor Samuel L. Jackson, musicians Jason Mraz, Meatloaf and Edwin McCain, and athletes Gale Sayers, Grant Fuhr and Dwight Clark. The Golf Channel is running a sweepstakes in conjunction with Golf Holiday that will fly the winner into town to spend time with John Daly at the tournament.
