I have seen Holy Cross in person, and a couple of the 'pards' games on tv. I have to say that this should be a great game. Despite the home field advantage, I'm picking Laughteryette because of their balanced offense. Curley is not the physical specimen Randolph is, but he's a very heady player and is making good decisions. Randolph, against Lehigh, tried to do too much at times, and almost cost his team the game because of it. I think LC will see how Lehigh was able to pressure him and feed off that. LC's offense should be able to move the ball on HC as well. Picking the 'Pards, 38-35.
Richmond coming off their upset to loss to Villanova will likely be scary. This could be 'big time ugly'...and probably should, but London will call off the dogs and give the backups some rep time. Spiders resew the web, 45-10
Colgate may have trouble with the Bison as the wild loss to Laughteryette lingers in their brains. Bucknell has been a 'stubborn' team for all opponents this year, but they just don't have the horses. This is also Colgate's last game, so they'll want to end up on a high note at home. Red Raiders, 31-17.
Lehigh will be looking to finish strong heading into #145, and after coming oh-so close to knocking off #13 Holy Cross, confidence should be growing that they can win against a gunslinger like Skelton. I look for Lehigh to be more ball control to keep him off the field. The running game showed well against Holy Cross, and should have been used more.(don't get me started on our OC). But barring a mental let down, I see Lehigh coming back with a nice 27-17 win.

LC , if not overconfidant, comfortable win. While LC showed little D vs Gate ,I think they have a bit more than HC.
LU over FU, both have disappointed this year but LU has D FU does not
GU will show up for Richmond unfortunately for Hoyas so will Spiders.
Gate over BU but close Biddle will have to bring them back after such a tough game.

Lafayette 59 HC 3 Will get ugly early and often.
LU 24 Fordham 21 Engineers ground Skelton.
Richmond 77 GU 6 This game was scheduled why exactly?
Colgate 38 Bison 10 Red Raiders bounce back.

87, I think you've gone a bit over the falls . You may indeed see the same LC D on Sat. Final could be 56-55. Think LC's balanced O and a presumably better D will win out 38-28 or so.
Altho, if Spiders dont sit there starters in the 2nd half, could score 70+

This game was scheduled why exactly?
Georgetown can't get on any new Ivy schedules for 3-4 more years and absent any other interest (e.g., it's not like Villanova or UNH is calling...), filled its schedule with opponents within a 2-3 hour drive (Howard, Old Dominion, Richmond)
Games like this can't help with recruiting, and recruiting could get worse over the next 2-3 years but for the simple fact that winless teams don't draw recruits' interest.
Hoyas finished winless on the road for the second time in four years, and open 2010 with four straight on the road and five of its first six.

Lafayette vs. Holy Cross...I've never been so excited for a trip to Worcester in all my life. Heart beats head in this instance. I'm going with the illogical homer pick Lafayette wins 38-35. Sader87's cheese has slipped off of his cracker. All of the sudden HC can only come up with 3 points? Huh?
Richmond vs. Georgetown...Why? Why? Richmond wins in a walk. They enact the mercy rule when the score hits 59-0. Should be a good tune up for the Spider's 4th string.
Lehigh vs. Fordham...I know I said Lehigh doesn't win again this year. I am changing my tune. They need to win this game to attain maximum annoyance levels heading into The Rivalry.
Bucknell vs. Colgate...Colgate gets back on track 28-12. Eachus is a stud. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Are you certain about that? A Lafayette win throws Holy Cross into the at-large pool and my suspicion is that they have a better shot at making the playoffs from the losers bracket than any other Patriot League team. Since the Liberty folks are hoping for one of those last 2-3-4 at-large spots, I would think that a Lafayette win might - just might - reduce their chances to some extent. Anyway, Liberty supporters, I'd be careful what I wished for in this one.

I forgot about Ciaccio. Tom, wasn't it? He was excellent. As I recall, he was a great runner as well as a solid overall QB. Still, Randolph seems able to control the outcome of games better than anyone I remember. I'm still thinking he's the man of these past two decades.

If the committee chose HC over us in that scenario, I would be very surprised and pissed off.

Rams over Mountain Hawks in another close one. Were the game on the road would go the other way
Colgate over Bison, saw Bison v. Rams and their offense seemed to consist of the QB running. Colgate by 3 touchdowns. More if they have the same refs they had aginst Fordham.
Richmond over Gtown. Requisceat in Pace, this game could be a rerun of the Charge of the Light Brigade. Then again, you never know, witness yeaterday's defeat of the Packers by the Bucs, who wore those original orange uniforms.

If you take away Gtown OOc losses, our league has a pretty decent mark. We don't know how we'd stack up against the CAA or top leagues because we don't play anybody aside from URI, Northeastern on a regular basis. And Lehigh hasn't been good enough to even challenge Nova.

Lafayette at Holy Cross Holy Cross Two good squads, I'm taking the home team. Holy Cross finally gets its key Patriot League tilt in Worcester, and this time they won't disappoint the home fans. It's the Crusaders' time
Richmond at Georgetown Richmond Coming off their first loss, the Spiders will likely be looking to bounce back. Yeah....
Lehigh at Fordham Fordham This one is kinda tough, as both have fluctuated in results throughout the season (even if the fluctuation ranges from "win" to "close loss" to "bad loss"). With nothing else to really go on, I'll take the home team
Bucknell at Colgate Colgate Disappointing that a potentially 9-2 season will wind up with nothing else to show for it. Hopefully they come out with fire in the belly for one last hurrah on the Andy Kerr turf until attention shifts to hockey

Vena, ably tutored by Fred Dunlap (who came out of retirement to coach him for two seasons), resurrected a dead program. He had a horrendous first game (second half) against Penn in the fourth game of the 1996 season and the rest was history.
Also, Colgate 31-8 against the Ivy since 1996. We have more than held our own against the whole conference and would love to have the chance to play Penn again after they rubbed our noses in it when the program was struggling, which was one of the few periods when the Quackers would schedule us.

I agree on the observation. While Randolph is one hell of a QB, I think Vena had a better overall team around him. HC relies too much on Randolph to carry the load and by scheming correctly on him, HC can be shut down, as we almost did last week. For the same reason, I'm picking LC to win Saturday because they appear to have better overall team balance.

Randolph, for whatever reason, was "pressing" last week. I give Lehigh's D all the credit in the world for bringing that about. They defended HC better than anyone this year by far.
I think Randolph's a great talent but if he does have a flaw (and Lord knows, we all do), it's that he tries to do too much at times.
Hopefully he'll limit his "chutzpah" this week and guide the Saders to victory.

Richmond 49, Gtown 3... subs play most of game.
Lehigh 28, Fordham 24... expected more out of the Rams this season. Lehigh has the best defense in the PL with an offense starting to click. They will be ready for the Pards.
Colgate 38, Bucknell 21... Colgate's season is over at 9-2. Wow that felt good to say.. So I'll say it again! Colgate's season is over at 9-2!
Holy Cross 35, Lafayette 34... Though I guaranteed this a win earlier in the year, I'm picking a loss solely on the dread factor. Something weird, illogical, or moronic (the story of LC football) has yet to cost us a game this year. On a technical basis, the Pards are better: stronger D, HC poor first down and pass protection, the offense revolving around Randolph. Gate was more of a threat with Eachus/McCord/Sullivan, but our DL is the best and should disrupt Randolph in the pocket. He is prone to INTs. Both believe they can win... will it come down to Davis PATs?

Vegas is calling this game a pick and giving Cross the standard three for home field. This means that the Pards MUST bring at least 2,500 to Fitton to make some noise.
Fitton can be a great place to play when it is anywhere near full. I really like it.

Not spectacular, but much better than our historic record. We should win at the least 1 out of 3 againt Colgate going forward

If the game is +41 that means they think Richmond will win by 41. If the over/under is 46.5 that means the combined points must be 46.5. That means they believe Georgetown will score 2.75 and Richmond will score 43.75.

I unearthed this one because there's a good point to be made here.
Winless teams or sub-.500 have some strikes against them when it comes to recruiting, but not always. What's the great equalizer? FBS games.
It's a lot easier to recruit a kid to Indiana State - a team with no recent history of winning - when you can say "In your junior year you'll be playing Louisville, and your senior year, Cincinnati". The PL can't compete by saying "You're going to play Havard every year, or Yale in 2012!"
The NCAA unfortunately has made the playing field for FBS bowl eligibility tied to scholarship limits. That means the already-slim number of FBS games Patriot teams were getting have become "none". That's a much bigger FCS recruiting disadvantage than folks have cared to talk about.
I think one of the biggest cases for PL football scholarships is for this reason alone. Not for guarantee chasing - just for opportunities for the athletes. I don't think any Lehigh player forgot beating Buffalo or playing UConn when those games were scheduled.
The same can happen with Georgetown. Imagine one game with Maryland - how much interest that would spark inside and outside the program. Even if you went 2-9 or 3-8 everything would change.

Spending $3.5M to get to 60 schoalrships is a laudable (if highly unlikely) goal, but there's no guarantee Maryland would ever extend such an offer. Remember, these two schools haven't played in a regular season series in basketball in 30 years.

Holy Cross - I could go either way on this one, but wonder which is more important to the Pards: The PL Title or The 145th? With LU gaining steam each week I think the right side of the Pard's brain will be thinking about the Ngineers and they will take their eyes off the ball just enough to give Dom the edge.
Richmond - should bounce back against the Hoyas.....(duh)
Colgate - Biddle is a finisher and he won't let the Raiders leave the field without one last win in 2009. Eachus + McCord = over 200 yds.
Lehigh - another close one. The losses to 'Gate and HC were warm-up games, as is this one. The Ngineers have their eyes on building strategy for an upset in The 145th. A win over the Rams should ensure that all cylinders are working for The Rivalry Game.

Eh, Pards played on a wet field at Yale and their speed was still effective. Downpour in the third too. Don't think Randolph's familiarity with the field matters since it changes each play. It's not like theirs a mud pit at the 20 a la 2005 Fisher Field.

I think perspectives have changed over the years due to being in a league with an actual championship and the result of AQ. Back in my era, there was no league and you just hoped some committee would recognize your season's accomplishments. So the L-L game had more of an 'end all' effect. Plus, before 1971 there were no playoffs either. So the 'younger generation' while always wanting to win that last game, has had different prizes to play for.

As John Skelton's entire family comes up to Rose Hill from El Paso for his final appearance on Jack Coffey field, it would be a fitting time to recall what an singular set of cicumstances led to his arrival in The Bronx. In high school, he was seriously considered by Texas Tech and UTEP where his father played and his mother also attended. But they chose not to offer. With the clock ticking, two of his uncles who played at Columbia suggested the Lions. So John traveled up north but the new coaching staff at Morningside Heights showed no interest. An uncle suggested dropping a tape at nearby Fordham. Newly hired Coach Massella took one look at the tape and was off to El Paso. The rest is history. Despite his size, the remarkable thing about Skelton is his athleticism. He played basketball and shortstop in high school. One of his uncles is a minority owner of the Texans so don't be surprised if they give him a shout. Finally, he is a grounded young man. His father coaches high school football and is a strong no nonsense native Oklahoman. At a recent post game tailgate, John and his brother Steve were very kind and respectful to an old timer Andy Lukac, the captain of Fordham's 8-1 1950 team which was our last very good big time team. Andy, a Pennsylvania coalminers son, told them of first going to Notre Dame to play for Frank Leahy but after military service being advised to avoid the loaded Bertelli-Lujack Irish by Fordham assistant coach Vince Lombardi. Andy was one of the few to be coached by Lombadi then play against him when Mr. Lombardi moved up the Hudson to coach with Earl Blaik and the Black Knights. Looking forward to Saturday.

Hey, Bogus, anything on lines for this weekend yet? With Lafayette having a Sagarin edge of 2.17 points* and then bumping HC a little for being the home team, I would think this might be anywhere from even to Lafayette by less than a TD.
Saturday's weather forecast fpr WooMass is deteriorating by the hour. The latest:
Rain. Rain may be heavy at times in the afternoon. Near steady temperature around 50. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Chance of rain near 100 percent
Who that favors is anybody's guess.
*Saqarin rating points are not scoreboard points. You do not simply add 3 to the Sagarin differential to get the spread. (If I knew how they do it - or, to put it another way, if I knew what I was talking about - I wouldn't be asking Bogus what's up - and I'd be rich.)

Colgate 31 Bucknell 21: Colgate has stumbled a bit down the stretch. Their defense has to be a bit of a concern but the Bison have struggled all year on "O".
Lafayette 31 Holy Cross 28: I just believe Lafayette is the more complete team. Holy Cross really does go as DR does. Lafayette does just enough to escape Worcester with a "W".
Lehigh 31 Fordham 20: I don't know why i'm picking Lehigh, i just am. Fordham has done nothing really all year but some how has managed 2 more wins than Lehigh. If Lehigh comes to play i think they're just a little better. However, Lehigh must win by more than 10, otherwise they'll lose.

Richmond - enough said
Lehigh - been play well, just coming up short. Have to beware the let down between HC & the 145th, but they badgered Randolph all game last week. Will do more of the same against Skelton.
Colgate - Bounce back from a tough loss.
Holy Cross - The weather? Doesn't matter. Who each team played and who they beat? Doesn't matter. How they played last week? Doesn't matter. For the second year in a row HC is in the de facto PL Championship and trying not to be second for the third year in a row. This game is why Randolph is still playing college FB and he has more than enough support. The defense has been better than given credit for, particularly when Anthony DiMichele has played in the secondary. He's expected to be there tomorrow along with DE Alex Carson (both missed last week against LU) and will give HC enough defense to allow the Crusaders to win!

Lehigh at Fordham. Say what you want about Lehigh, but the Mountain Hawks know the importance of winning the game before "that school in Easton". They've won eleven straight games the second weekend in November (and the game they lost in 1997 wasn't exactly a cakewalk - a 24-19 defeat to Delaware).
Some teams quit after being out of the Patriot League race, but this team doesn't strike me in that way. This team has fought hard through the losses, trying to find answers to questions. And with the biggest game yet to play for, the players know they need to win this one to get to next weekend.
They don't know what they'll get next weekend: either the Leopards will be Patriot League champs, or they'll be 8-2 and will need to beat Lehigh to have a prayer at making the playoffs as an at-large team. But they do know they need to win this weekend to have a chance, and I think the hard work will pay off handsomely with a win here. Win here, and go into "The Rivalry" guns blazing.

Not incredibly far from Harvard Stadium is Fitton Field, where Payton Award candidate Dominic Randolph will aim to make his closing argument for the award when his Holy Cross team faces off against Lafayette for the Patriot League championship. Randolph has been a multi-faceted attack for the Crusaders: not only passing the ball (2,810 passing yards, 28 touchdowns) but also running the ball (426 yards, 5 touchdowns). He’s one tantalizing win away from the goals that have eluded Holy Cross for nearly two decades: a Patriot League title (their last was in 1991) and a place in the FCS playoffs (their last, and only, appearance was in 1983).
That’s not to sell short Lafayette’s chances, with quarterback Rob Curley (2,432 passing yards, 23 touchdowns) coming almost out of nowhere to potentially lead the Leopards to their fourth playoff appearance in the last six years. A more efficient passer than Randolph - and fresh off a seven touchdown performance in a 56-49 victory over Colgate - Curley could lead the Leopards to the victory here.
But at home, in front of the biggest crowd Holy Cross may have seen in years, it just seems like Randolph should have what it takes to finally give the Crusaders that elusive Patriot League title.
Meanwhile, Colgate will attempt to make their closing argument for an at-large playoff berth against Bucknell. They’ll do so - and hope that the rest of the FCS world implodes in a 2012-like disaster area. (It might.)
Purple Defense Eaters 42, Curley-Tailed Leopards 38
Panty Raiders 49, Bison Burgers 12
While the Villanova Wildcats shouldn’t have too much trouble with 2-7 Towson this weekend, and the Richmond Spiders won’t have any struggles with the winless Georgetown Hoyas, it’s New Hampshire’s trip to William & Mary that looms as an interesting game that could be for a home game - or more - in the FCS playoffs. The Tribe, who have done it with a stifling defense (led by defensive lineman Adrian Tracy’s 50 tackles and 7 sacks), the Wildcats’ balanced offense (powered by running backs Chad Kackert and Sean Jellison) and opportunistic defense (defensive back Dino Vasso and linebacker Terrance Klein both have four interceptions apiece) have won games for New Hampshire.
New Hampshire has always struggled against the Tribe, and I think that trend holds this week as Tracy and company set up a big game next weekend against Richmond.

Spider Men 56, Hoya Boyas 0
Nova Nation 24, Tigger Nation 6

Good luck to everyone today (yes even you, Lehigh). Thoughts go especially to the Hoyas who have a very difficult match. Play tough and stay healthy!
