Pedro looking a little shaky. Seems like the Yankees have more hard-hit balls off him in the first two innings tonight than they did in all of Game 2. Only one of them has gone for a hit, but that was a two-run homer by Matsui.

Pedro Ks A-Rod with the bases loaded. That was huge. If Pedro gets out of this inning, you probably bring him back out for the 4th against the bottom of the order, but that should be it; no way you can let him face the top of the order one more time.

Why the hell does Pedro throw fastball after fastball to Matsui?? The guy is tattooing him and he just throws the same pitch. Stupid job by Charlie and Dubee leaving him in there.

There's no tomorrows and its supposed to be all hands on deck, put Happ in.

With two Rivera innings looming at the end, this has already become a very short game for the Phillies . . .

Agree - Pedro has nothing, and Matsui is perfect for that park - he was just a bloop pop-up from hitting a grannie there. Should've seen Happ in there for Matsui. I mean, Pedro's only got another inning, two max in him. Hard to see the Phils being able to put up the 5 or 6 runs they'll need to to win this, but hey, it ain't over yet.

The Phils need to chip away here...one run at a time...still plenty of time to do it in.

UMass922

1-2-3 inning for Pedro, but that has got to be his last inning. Even there, two of the outs were very hard-hit balls, and you've got the top of the Yankees order due up in the 5th.

I'm not running up the white flag yet, but I will say I'd rather lose by being behind the whole time than have another Joe Carter scenario. That night in '93 really sucked. I don't think it can get any worse than that.

Game over, World Series over. Now the only reason to keep watching is to see if Utley can break the WS home run record.

Sorry buddy, but you're wrong. I have no interest in either the Phillies or the Yanks, just call em like I see em. When the payroll difference between the the highest paid team and the 2nd highest can be the overall salary for a MLB ballclub, something needs to be fixed.

The funny part is given all the money they spent they only won one title so far. That's a lot of wasted money a long the way.

It's called professional baseball. Yankees haven't won since 2000, and if they have the money to spend, might as well spend it on players. Minnesota had the richest owner in baseball for years, didn't spend the money, haven't been to the series since 1991.

Good run. Yankees just too much. Howard, Hamels and Lidge complete letdown. Fill in a couple missing pieces and it could be Yanks-Phils again next year. Sorry to all you fans who don't like either. :p

After his quitter comments and defeatist demeanor starting with his questioning of the start time of his game in the Colorado series in the press, I don't know any Phillies fans who would shed a tear at this point.

Philly fans don't like to root for prima donna little bitches. Send him to the Cubs!

I think you're jumping the gun big time on that one. He's signed through 2011, then 2012 is another arbitration year, and he's not a free agent until 2013. Let's see what he does next year. Remember, this year he came off a year where he threw more innings than he ever had, and he was the prime candidate for that Verducci theory of young pitchers having an off year following a year where they drastically uptick their innings pitched.

Hamels may be loopy, but Steve Carlton was a nut and he lasted in Philly for more than a decade. If he wins games and pitches well, no one will care how loopy he is. Next year should give us a good idea if that past year was just one of those Verducci-anamoly years or if Hamels really is damaged goods.

Nah, it's the House than Steinbrenner built. Jeter was a nice cog, but the Yanks are where they are because Steinbrenner has made them a cash cow. Granted, that should be relatively easy to do in the nation's biggest market, by a wide margin as well, but he still had to do it.

The payroll disparity has been there for years and the Yankees haven't won the WS for 9 years. funny how we didn't hear how the Red Sox bought their championships...they have a high payroll also and have won 2 championships in the years that the Yankees have not. Heck, other than CC and Burnett (who had one good game in the playoffs) they didn't even make the playoffs last year with A-Rod etc.....

In the Red Sox defense, their payroll never topped $140M. The Yanks have been well over $200M for years now. That's more than a 40% increase or, to put it in other terms, that's about 2 Florida Marlins team difference between what the Red Sox spend and what the Yanks spend.

And on the other note, the payroll is important if you spend it right. The Yanks problem in the 9 year, $2B chasm without a title was that they spent all that money and didn't get the pitching they needed. They finally did it this year with Sabbathia and Burnett and the results were better.

They always play second fiddle to the Yanks in that city and can't come close to matching them in revenue or spending. Plus, they just can't get out of their own way with the decisions they make.

And in 1998, Baltimore had the highest payroll yet the Yankees set a record for most wins in a season.

Since 1995, you've had teams like Baltimore, dodgers, Mets, Red Sox, Rangers all ranked #2 in salary other years yet only twice did those teams win the World Series.

People need to get past this idea that players are like gold bricks locked away in a safe. They are called players because they have to "play" the games. And as we've seen with many teams throughout history, baseball requires everyone gelling to get it done as they play the games. The Yankees signed 2 good pitchers this off-season, thinking they'd compliment their 19 game winner and ace, Wang. Wang blew it and then got hurt for the season as they went with a 3.5 man rotation this season. But they played the games and won this year. Just like Boston in 2007, Chicago in 2008.

Come on, don't go back to 1995. How much greater was Baltimore's spend versus the #2 team? Not a whole lot. There's so much more discrepancy between the #1 team and the #2 team now in terms of spending than there's been for maybe ever (except for maybe the 40's and the 50's). And that doesn't even get into the issue of the #1 team versus the #30 team. To say that the gap today is anything like the gap back then is not only silly but also incorrect.

As for how you spend the money, yes, that's always been important and that's why the Yanks failed for the 9 years between titles - they didn't spend it on the right pitching. Guys like Wang are why they didn't win (and Wang was no longer the ace once Sabbthia got there, so let's dispense with the idea that Sabbathia and Burnett were just fillers behind Wang) - guys like Wang were and are terrible post season pitchers and that's what killed the Yanks in those 9 years. They got better results this year and that's why they have the title. But they're also one of the only teams that can try anew every year until they get it right.

If the sport/league allows your team to spend your way to a championship, then by all means YOU TRY AND DO IT!!!!!!

Congrats to the Yanks. Well deserved. The best team in baseball during the regular season just won the championship.

And there ain't nothing wrong with that, sometimes it can even be refreshing for sports.

I agree. Hamels can come back with an excellent year. The comments made after game three were taken out of context. I heard the tape for the time a good minute BEFORE he made the comment about needing a fresh start. When I first heard his comments I was pissed, too. But after hearing the entire Q&A it is no where near as bad as the media wants to play it.
