Eastern Illinois Wins -- Again -- on Jacksonville State's Turf

http://media.al.com/pressbox/photo/james-wilkerson---1024jpg-0d6e4c1168fa8f92_large.jpgThe Eastern Illinois Panthers were not ready to let Jacksonville State claim the people’s Ohio Valley Conference championship, so they came to Paul Snow Stadium and beat the Gamecocks 28-20.

Saturday’s win spoiled JSU’s homecoming and ruined the APR-banned squad’s goal of going undefeated against fellow I-AA teams. Before Saturday, the 4-3 Gamecocks had lost only to No. 11 Georgia Tech and Florida State and had won four straight.

The difference was a utter collapse of JSU’s special teams. EIU scored on an 87-yard kickoff return, recovered a fumble on a punt return at Jacksonville’s 39 in the final period and did not allow the Gamecocks a single yard on kickoff returns. JSU had led the nation in that category coming into the game at 26.61 yards per return.

EIU, which now has a 3-1 record at Jacksonville State – and a 1-2 mark at home vs. the Gamecocks – managed just 65 yards rushing and 255 total. JSU ran for 129 and had 365 total.

Quarterback Ryan Perrilloux said the Gamecocks, used last week’s open date to heal, but the off-time hurt mentally.

“We just weren’t focused. I think the bye week helped us physically, but we were just not into it mentally,” he said.

“We’re still going to win the conference. That’s the thing we said at the beginning of the year: We’re going to be No. 1 in the conference and top 10 in the country. Those goals are still reachable.”

Perrilloux was 16-for-26 with one interception with a 38-yard touchdown to James Wilkerson and 236 yards through the air.

Eastern Illinois’ QB Jake Christensen, a transfer from Iowa, was 16-29-1 for 190 yards with a pair of TD passes – of 6 and 10 yards.

JSU had terrible field position most of the game. The Gamecocks’ scoring drives were 46, 80 and 80 yards while EIU scored from 58, 4 (after blocking a JSU punt), 51 and on the 87-yard kickoff return.

Jacksonville plays at Austin Peay at 6 p.m. on Halloween while EIU is at Murray State.
The Panthers are 6-2 overall, 4-1 in the OVC. Eastern Kentucky leads the league – having beaten the Panthers 36-31 – at 4-2, 4-1 with a night game at Peay.
