View Full Version : ASU better start the wait...

ASU better start the wait until next season, seeing as App State athletics has nothing else to offer you all.

We Panther fans get nationally recognized wrestling and men's basketball teams to entertain us until next season. I think a third straight NCAA apperance might help take the sting away a tad bit. :p

P.S.-Don't take this seriously, just some fun (this message only applies to those "select few" that are offended by this)

This is true. I was in Boone during the glorious Buzz Peterson years when we had a good basketball team, but it all just fell apart when he left. I've never even gotten to see a game in the new arena.

When i was in high school, with a perrenial winning football team, we'd throw a football out on to the court every time we got behind in basketball. One year however, we won all four "major sport" titles, Football, Hoopball, baseball, and track. Only sort that truly sukked was girls basketball

Although UNI already beat my Catamounts in hoops this season, I was still cheering on the Purple & Gold on Friday night. I'll have to live with and hear about this App win forever. The horror.

If your wrestling team was top #25 you would probably think differently. And must I remind you this is the state of Iowa, the state that won nine straight NCAA National Championships (dynasty never matched in ANY sport). All three state schools are top #25, every high school as it as well, it's huge in Iowa.

I know there is not much to do in Iowa, but jeez going to watch two guys in tights hold each other?? That is pretty much at the bottom of my list of things to do.

I wouldn't care if the team was ranked #1 and was wrestling the #2 team in the nation. I would still rather watch a bowling re-run on espn 14.

And it has consistently been my experience that the families and fans are the nicest of any sport.

I don't care how good they are, you don't lose a game by 33 points. UNI beat #12 Iowa (which beat your precious NC State), and it's only loss is to Iowa State (at ISU by 7 points). I would be shocked if UNI lost to Duke by more than 20. I'm not trying to piss you off, but just face the facts, no matter how you look at it, your basketball team would battle for last place in the Valley with Evansville and you would probably lose.

Hell, our basketball team may battle for last in the SoCon. Then again, they caould come out as north division champs. Depends on which shows up on the most nights.

ASU has won at leat one SoCon conference championship in evey sport.

True, the ACC is the greatest basketball conference...but, honestly. State does not consistently compete with the top of the ACC. Maybe now it looks like it with the expansion and teams of Miami and VTech's quality. Nevertheless, State does rule over Clemson and UVA, but then again...who doesn't? State will never be legit...

I've hated Duke for as long as I can remember, even back in the days when UNC beat them whenever they stepped on the court and Coach K was a nobody. And, Duke University was started in my hometown of Trinity, NC and I still hate Duke. But, the difference is: I can respect Duke, I can't respect State.

So, were you born near the ACC Tournament in 2004? Because before winning that game, Maryland had lost 14 out of 18 to Duke. This is recent history. What games were you watching? Duke is 3-3 against Maryland in its last 6, 6-3 in its last 9 and 14-4 in its last 18.

every game in recent history has been a full-out war. The Maryland/Duke rivalry really helped the ACC out a lot when UNC was going through the struggling years. And yep, I was alive during the ACC tourney in 2004, were you alive during the NCAA TOURNEY in 2002? refresh me, who came out on top that year?.......

do me a favor and look at the series over the last 5 or so years, Maryland has consistently been a nightmare for Duke, esp. when the over-rated as always Blue Devils are #1.......

and how about last year? SWEEP

Sure, it has been very even in the last five years with Duke holding a 7-6 lead. The intensity of the series has never been part of the debate.

The question at hand is whether or not Maryland "usually" beats Duke. Unless you're only talking about one season, then that isn't the case.

Well, yes. If they get to the Big Dance they do have a shot, as do the other 63 teams. Not a very big chance but they do.

But the main this, is you said they didn't deserve to be there and would be wiped out in the first round. UNI is an excellent ball club (they are currently 9-1 with wins over Iowa and LSU) and I would be dissapointed if they lost in the first round of the tournament this year. They have the quality to at least make it to the Sweet 16.

If UNI keeps playnig like that then yes, they do deserve to be there, just as Davidson has from the SoCon a few times. Most of the teams that are in from autobids are not good enough to contend and are there as nothing more than Duke et al's doormat to wipe their feet on on the way to the second round, and that is what I hate about the NCAA tournament.

This is just a topic that always gets me going. I am not a big basketball fan anyway, but I have just always felt that the tournament should be the best 64 teams in the country, if it has to even be 64 teams. In my world they'd line up #1 through #32 and have at it, getting rid of the autobids - if you're good enough, you're in. Of course it's not my world and that's why I post idiotic statements anonymously on a messageboard when I should be working! haha.

ASU and Furman absolutely not.

UNI and SIU have had quality teams for years now with SIU making the sweet 16 a couple times. The Missouri Valley Conference is ranked in the top 10 of conferences where the southern is always in the high 20's.

We shouldn't even be comparing the two. Davidson who is the best in the southern conference would be at best third this year in the MVC.

UNI's program is where Gonzaga's was a couple years ago. They are a very talented team who probably should have a top ten ranking, but do not have the name.....YET.

With the win over Dayton on Friday that puts them at 10-1...they will be ranked in the top 25 this week.

GrizSweeper
December 25th, 2005, 09:07 PM
first UNI has to make a run in the tourney, then you can start comparing them to the zags, but I must admit that UNI has been very impressive this year, if there wasn't a biass against some of these smaller schools UNI would already be in the top 25, It would probly never happen but I would love to see UNI face off against Montana (10-1) in the big dance, that would be sweet, best of luck to both programs

SIU won their opening round game in the tourney last year and lead Oklahoma State at halftime before losing in the second round. They went to the Sweet 16 a couple of years ago (beating Texas Tech and Georgia). UNI was in the Dance last year as I recall a lost a very close game in their opener. Knocking mid-majors in hoops is right up there with knocking IAA in my book. The MVC is on the verge of kicking in the door and knocking off some BCS schools in basketball this March. I would not be surprised to see them get 4 bids this year and have a team make a run to the Elite Eight or farther.

Absolutely. Although my 'first love of sports' is football, I have the highest respect for collegiate wrestling. I, too, wrestled in hs and wrestled intramaurally at Lehigh which used to have the largest IM wrestling tournament in the country. It is the only sport where there is no one else to blame other than yourself. No one else fumbled, struck out, missed a shot, etc. You against your opponent. Every kid should be made to wrestle in elementary/junior high. It helps one learn alot about oneself.
