Ok, Mets fans and others...ok...not sure who else out there falls in this category.

This is our place to talk about anything but the World Series.

I'm not rooting for anyone this year, but I'm going to have to root against the Phillies...here's why.

I survived a Yankees dynasty in the 90s, I can do it again. If the Yankees win again, there's really no new ammo their fans can use to bug me.

I won't be able to stomach another rival maintaining a dynastic-type run. (Oh sure, the Braves had a good streak, but they always fell short when it mattered).

So, I say Go Y...ou other team playing the Phillies!!

Other Mets fans, who are you rooting against?

As a Mets fan, I think I am agreeing with you. At least I can support the 1/2 of the family that are Y...ou other team's fans. (kind of weird that as a Jets fan I had to root against the Giants though in that Super Bowl)

This must be what Yankees fans went through in 1986. Though I suspect they had no problem rooting for the Mets in that one.

I think it's different. We Mets/Jets fans are traditional underdog guys who aren't big fans of the favorite teams (Yanks/Giants) and will always hate them. Philly and Pennsylvania just have had too many happy moments recently so that the Mets fans will probably root against the Phils more now. If the Phillies hadn't won last year, I think it would be different. It really is painful though.

The Yanks/Giants fans seem to more look down on the Mets/Jets as a "you are not worthy" group but if push came to shove against a Yanks/Giants rival or against another team that they didn't really care for, they would jump right with the Mets/Jets to destroy that team.

Call it the little brother jealousy for the Mets/Jets fans if you want, it's just how it is.

Dukie95
October 26th, 2009, 01:41 PM
Yes, even I conceded it wouldn't have been difficult, but I can't think of another case where one entire fan base has no one to root for or against.

It would be like the White Sox playing the Cardinals, or the Angels playing the Giants...

And yes, if the Phillies hadn't won last year, it would be different....this really is a unique circumstance.

Typical Stockholm syndrome where a powerless weinie is tortured. tormented, and controlled by the more powerful neighbor. The weinie always winds up identifying with the bully and supporting him even more. So it is with Mets' fans and the Yankees.

One can find this in any playground or school yard. Met's fans should just give up and admit that "Resistance is futile". They should also admit reality and change the name of the team to the New York Wussies.

It's easy for this Mets fan...root against the Yanks. That rivalry has been going on forever and won't go away soon. Phils have only been a rival for a few years and it will go away once both teams aren't good again, even started too this year with the Mets sucking. Plus I always find it comical how obsessed the Phils players are with the Mets....they are about to win 2 straight World Series and they'll still make comments like a little brother.

Nah - it's still fun poking fun at the Mets. They took such umbrage at Rollins for declaring the Phils the team to beat 3 years ago and yet all the Phils have done is win 3 straight division titles, with a World Series (could be two) in the meantime. And each year the Mets are sure they have fixed the problems that have "let" the Phils dominate the division since Rollins' pronouncement. Maybe if the Braves and Marlins had fans in any numbers we'd talk about them, but until then, we're going to have a little fun with the Mutts. xlolx

But the Mets WERE the team to beat.

The led almost the whole way in 2007 & 2008.

Then they got beat. ;)

It's funny how the Phillies fans have a couple of good years and they are now all out there. Almost nothing from the fans for most of 20-25 years (I know there were a few good years out there when you must have talked too) and then now they start talking that they've had 3 good years in a row. At least keep talking when your team isn't doing well too.

Brother, when the team you root for is the first in the world to lose 10,000 games, you're allowed to get giddy when they win.

Seriously man, we had a big party for the 10,000th loss - we've always been here, now we're supposed to tone it down after a century plus of losing? What's the point of taking it on the chin for most of our lives if we can't whoop it up when we've got a winner? xnodx

Yeah, the NY papers have to photoshop a picture of a Philly to put him in drag, whereas the Yanks and their #1 fan make the work much easier:

Same here man - Game 6 still ranks as the single greatest game I've ever been at. Loved it when the Phanatic came out in a leotard and started a Jane Fonda tape, only to have it cut halfway through to a rousing "Whoomp There it Is" by Tag Team. And then we did our own Philly version of the tomahawk chop, with everyone just flailing both arms in mockery. Good times.

My second favorite live game was probably the Eagles/Dallas game where Barry Switzer went for it twice on 4th and 1 from his own 20-something, only up by a point with 2 minutes to go in the game. And the Eagles stopped them twice. Just a thing of beauty. The whole walk out of the Vet after that game was just one non-stop smack the cowboys session. Beautiful.

I missed that Dallas game, but I did see the game (I'm guessing 92'ish) where Hershel Walker ran all over the Cowboys on MNF. Some MF'er set off an M-80 on the concourse about 10 rows behind my ears. Friggin' loud as hell echoing through that concrete tub. xmadx

My favorite Philly pro sports live moment was a Flyers/Rangers playoff game in 1987. Went with my boss (part time job) who was from NYC. Tons of penalties and the Flyers went crazy in the third period and blew them out 8-3. Spectrum was insane.
