Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin to Play at Reliant Stadium in 2010

HOUSTON - The second-oldest Division I Football Championship Subdivision rivalry in Texas will have a new home at Reliant Stadium beginning next season, Lone Star Sports & Entertainment announced Tuesday. Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin will face off in the Battle of the Piney Woods in Houston next October.

“The Battle of the Piney Woods is one of the great traditions in college football in the state of Texas, and we are proud to bring it to Reliant Stadium,” LSSE president Jamey Rootes said. “We want to make Reliant Stadium the premier venue for every level of college football in Texas; and this rivalry brings us one step closer to that goal.”

Four year deal...


Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin have agreed to a four-year agreement to play their annual “Battle of the Piney Woods” football series at Reliant Stadium through 2013, school and stadium officials announced Tuesday.

That kinda sucks IMO.

Make it a 1 time shot or do it every 5 years or something.

Why does it suck?

I think if you are going to do it - commit to it for a few years. Try to build it up. If you can constantly get 22-26k (26k is the goal) in there, keep doing it.

The SFA AD said he wants this to be the state's FCS version of OU-Texas weekend. Got to create the event.

Because there is something special about winning a SLC rivalry game at home.

Just think, a SHSU frosh comin in next year won't ever get to see the Battle for Piney Woods at home. If they even make it to Houston for the game, they'll have memories of a 1/3 full stadium (at best).

Your opinion is well taken...

Time will tell. I am skeptical, but I do like that LSSE is involved and will do what they can. If you get 25k at this game, it will be quite a feat.

Hopefully they can create an environment and that Bearkat Alley and Lumberjack Alley are set up adjacent to each other!
