Three Southland Conference Teams in the top 20. Great for the SLC. If things pan out, the SLC could send two teams into the postseason this year. Will be fun to watch newcomer to the top 25, No. 20 SFA take on No. 9 UCA this weekend. This game will be televised on SLC TV for any of those interested.
TxState better get their crap together if there is an hope in making it into the postseason though, as the cats will face these top 20 teams all back to back beginning in two weeks.

Looks like Steele is half right on Hofstra with them clearly being improved but not top 10 like he had them and Texas State is not looking good at all where Steele had them outside the top 40 and nobody else did. Anyone started looking at how the preseason lists have compared to the postseason lists this year?

Based on this I would say the most overrated team is SC State. I think they should be outside of the top 15. Colgate could qualify as well. They should be no higher than 23 or 24, at best. The most underrated is NAU for not being in the top 25 but SFA is lower than I thought too.
EKU should fall out and put NAU at #21 and Colgate at #25 with SFA a few spots higher and then I would be all for this.

Don't hold your breath for the Coaches or TSN poll.
Both are pretty bad this year and neither would fit your criteria. The TSN is made of 'media members' and the Coaches poll is dominated by SIDs that vote for their coaches. Not exactly the "on-field" experience you are looking for.

I think it's possible for a team like SCSt to be #11 without receiving any votes of 11 or better. I'm guessing they are on just about every ballot in the 14-18ish range, which when added up gives them enough votes to be 11. (I have them 17). NAU is just getting on some people's radar. xpeacex

Elon has never been to the playoffs, never won the SoCon. 8th is possibly the highest they've ever been ranked on AGS. They've been steadily moving up in polls. Respect is earned through accomplishment, not because fans demand it. If Elon keeps winning, ranking will continue to rise. But there are still plenty of conference games left.

Frankly, it's a combination of both. The majority of the voters on this poll (I am not one) have a lot of knowledge and understanding of FCS football. Past experiences will apply, for better or worse.
Do you honestly think Elon should be ranked higher than any of the 7 teams above it?
Applachian is ranked a bit too high at the moment, but history tells us a sluggish start for them does not mean a complete meltdown. Last year ASU started 2-2, and then didn't lose again until the playoffs.
Like I said, Elon this week is possibly ranked as high as it ever has been on AGS, and that's not good enough for you? You think that's a lack of respect?

Exactly. To move Elon into the top five you have to drop UNI, Montana and/or two of the four CAA teams that won their FBS games (and whose only losses are to other top 7 CAA teams).

If Elon keeps winning, and teams ahead of them lose, they'll move up. Hard to see them leapfrogging teams with the same records at this time.
Regardless, though, Elon will get their chance to prove things come playoff time. And if Elon wins the SoCon, they'll get a top 4 seed - whether they get a top 2 seed is dependent on other teams losing, but it's certainly possible.

If UR, UNH, UNI and Montana run the table (a big IF) I think the selection committee will be hard-pressed not to seed those four, even the loser of the CAA coin flip.

Two things made this week's poll voting difficult.
1) The number of losses that occurred by ranked teams. SC State, Jacksonville State, and SD State probably benefitted tremendously from those mid-tier losses; thus their ascension into the top-15. I personally think SC State and Jax State are about right and are better than people wish to give them credit for. . .
2) Your philosophy about ranking; some I'm sure rank who they think the best 25 teams are; while others rank the 25 most successful seasons so far.

Actually, you're kinda right there. That Wake Forest loss isn't going to look better than wins over Ball St or Duke. UNH would have wins too against nova and W&M (and UMass, although they're overrated). Richmond would have wins over W&M, nova, UD, JMU, and UMass. If Elon did get a top 4 seed, it would have to be over UNH, and that looks like a stretch - only way they'd get it is if the committee doesn't want to give the CAA two seeds.

Yeah. And not just because of records, winning histories and conferences - all four also have a very solid history of turning in strong performances at the turnstiles when hosting playoff games. Like it or not, that still factors in. If Elon keeps it up, they should be able to get at least one home game, which can help in subsequent years.

UC Davis? The one that is 2-3 with only 1 Division I win? Western Oregon is DII, right? correct me if I'm wrong.
Why should a team that is 2-3 with 1 Division I win be ranked?

Wow, ranking a team who you picked would only win 3 games all this year (and has already beaten that prediction) - was it a tough ballot for you to hit "confirm"? xlolx
Easy there GF. If memory serves, UD won 4 last year (going 4 - 8, riiight???). I'm pretty sure I gave UD the credit that they would win at least 4, and Devlin would add 1 maybe 2 W's. The gimme's were WC, DSU, TU, HU. The Unk's were Maine & UMass.
Now you've beaten Maine & UMass which should be the tougher games, but you still got business to take care of against TU & HU.
Hey, ya might even get lucky against JMU when ya see'em. If JMU loses to Nova this week, you can stick a fork in em. By the time they come to Newark, that team's spirit will be broken.
Any CAA team with an above .500 record is top 25 poll worthy.

Okay, some West Coast bias finally. I had Northern Arizona at 20. I also had SFA at 18. If UC Davis can beat Cal Poly they will show up in the polls - if they lose they are an also-ran.

I don't fault voters too much this week. I had an impossible time filling out my poll as there aren't many good teams right now. FWIW, I saw so few teams worth voting for that CCSU was my #25.
xflaggedx
I had an interesting week as well with so many ranked teams losing, but CCSU??? xchinscratchx There had to be at least one CAA, Southern, Southland, MVFC, Big Sky team up for consideration before CCSU (whose only loss was to W&M, but has beaten 1-4 Lehigh, 2-2 Columbia, 1-4 Sacred Heart and 0-6 Robert Morris).

The only team that sticks out in the ACC is VT. The rest show up a week and then don't the next (UVA, Maryland, Florida St. etc.). Florida would kill 11 of the 12 ACC teams right now. As far as I see it, UR had the 'W' and you guys the 'L' and neither was against VT. This year with many of the top FCS teams beating a FBS team can make the difference in the polls.

NAU not in the poll shows this to be a complete JOKE. Pathetic voting.
I feel your pain, dbjon! Last week, before the Northern Arizona victory over Montana State, the Lumberjacks came in at 26th on Gridiron Power Index.
After convincingly beating the Bobcats in Bozeman this past weekend, Sagarin already has NAU 13th among all FCS teams, so I am sure the jacks will jump in the GPI this week, and the AGS voters will eventually catch up if you keep winning.
Still plenty of games remaining!

I think the past does play a part in the rankings. Elon, Furman and NAU all have disappointed bandwagon followers the last few years. Each team looked good until big games at the end of the season did them in. That sticks with a voter and makes them want to see more before getting back on.
You don't take back a significat other after they lie/cheat on you without a little reassurance first right????

Elon has never been to the playoffs, never won the SoCon. 8th is possibly the highest they've ever been ranked on AGS. They've been steadily moving up in polls. Respect is earned through accomplishment, not because fans demand it. If Elon keeps winning, ranking will continue to rise. But there are still plenty of conference games left.
not saying that APP deserves to be ranked higher, but they have won 3 in a row and havent moved up a single spot. i guess the pollsters just dont like these "ugly wins". like I said i dont really think the ranking is unfair as i would be the first to admit app hasnt played well thus far, but its rare to win 3 straight games and not move up ANY.

I personally like Elon to be ranked a little lower than they probably want to be ranked. It seems like Elon plays worse when they have a really high ranking go to their head. The #4 vs #5 match with Richmond last season and the #3 vs #4 match with Wofford last season seemed to have created overinflated ambitions in the fans and players at the time. Nevertheless, we got beat bad in both games, and players and fans alike felt deflated. So I pretty much like having a lower ranking than desired so the expectations and egos occurred from having a higher ranking are less likely to happen.

Elon does not have a quality, top shelf win. If you don't believe this, just analyze the schedule of each opponent that Elon has played. There is not a quality win by even one of those opponents! In fact the losses are pitiful. Don't try to claim success based on reputations or records from the past. What appears to be developing is the overall weakness of the Southern Conference. I predict that Appy gets busy and beats the pants off their remaining opponents and restores order.
