What a shame the Defending World Champion Phillies get the lame 2:37pm time slots TWO days in a row. Of course the Yankees get the opening Prime Time slot yesterday and today off so they can play Friday's Prime Time slot. Beotches.

It's true. If MLB wanted to be fair about it then the Yankees would have played a day game yesturday so that the Phillies wouldn't have to play two of them in a row. Hell if they really wanted to be fair they would have made the Yankees select today for their Game 1 and played it at 2:37. But the hell with the rest of the league...right Selig.

Today is a very important game for the Phils. Being up 2-0 going to Denver is a helluva lot different than having to take 2 of 3 without homefield advantage and a fairly big dropoff down to Happ or Blanton.

Get 'er done Cole!

So do you guys want the instant updates again? I'll be parked in front of the tube with my laptop again (pretending to telework).

MLB should have made the Yankees play their first game today in all fairness to the Twins. I'm just wondering why the Yankees got to choose what day they played their first game?

They could have played the tie break game on Monday at a different ball park. But baseball made the wise decision to play the game so that they could get the tail end of it to air during dinner time so most of America could watch it. MLB doesn't care if the Twins are tired...they just want to have their ratings boosted. If you had read the rest of my comment you would have seen that I said it would have been better had that game been played today instead!

It was because they had the best record in the AL. And since the AL won the All-Star game they have this split series scheduling idea to go along with it. They really should have just decided it themselves...we all know how MLB works.

I lived in the next town north of Carlsbad when I was stationed there. They're definitely Padres fans in Carlsbad. That's the north end of San Diego County. Camp Pendleton takes up the next 20 miles of coast north of that and then there's Orange County and halos fans.

Single.

Ump's not giving anything off the plate. Cole had 1-2 and was worked full.

Runner to second. Jumped off on Hamels leg lift, but Howard couldn't peg him.

And now a sac. 1 out man on third.

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 01:42 PM
1-0. Dribbler down the first base line. Cole came home but too late. Man on first 1 out still.

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 01:48 PM
J-Roll ground out.

Victorino single to left.

Victorino has 'em worried. Several throws to first then a pitchout.

Utley beats out DP. 2 outs.

Howard just misses a HR down the left - foul. DOH!

Howard K.

1-0 Rocks top of 2nd.

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 02:01 PM
First man for Rocks in 2nd grounds out.

Torrealba infield single.

Spilborghs Ks!

And ANOTHER K!

Hamels hits a groove there.

1-0 Rocks middle second.

GannonFan
October 8th, 2009, 02:04 PM
So the Rockie who stole 2nd in the first inning was basically caught going early from 1st and just beat the throw from Howard?

So the Rockie who stole 2nd in the first inning was basically caught going early from 1st and just beat the throw from Howard?

Yeah, but Hamels could have gotten the ball to Ryan faster too. It would have been a close play even with a perfect throw. Not a glaringly bad throw like we saw from Ryan a few times in early September, if you'll remember that couple of games. I'll go back and take a look between innings.

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 02:09 PM
Argh. Werth works a 3-0 count and then pops up meagerly to shallow left on the fourth pitch. xoopsx

Raul single to center.

Feliz K looking. Almost had an infield hit but it rolled inches left of third base.

Ruiz K.

Still 1-0 Rocks. Top of 3rd.

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 02:18 PM
So the Rockie who stole 2nd in the first inning was basically caught going early from 1st and just beat the throw from Howard?

OK, took a closer look. Hamels got the ball there plenty fast. Howard double clutched getting the ball out of his glove. Still could have gotten the runner on a low throw but if was neck high to J-Roll. No error charged.

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 02:20 PM
Cook K. Three in a row for Cole.

Gonzalez single.

Fowler K! The ump is now giving the low strike.

Yeah! Ryan got it right this time. Gonzalez caught stealing! Same scenario as the first inning. Cole's leg kick must be very deceiving. How many times have we seen this lately?

1-0 bottom of 3rd. C'mon bats!

93henfan
October 8th, 2009, 02:30 PM
Bottom of third:

Cole walks on five pitches. :D

Damn it. DP. J-Roll grounds sharply to Rocks first baseman.

Victorino single up the middle. Couldn't be handled by the second baseman.

Victorino is drawing all kinds of throws to 1st.

This is one long at bat for Utley. Jesus.

Utley Ks looking.

Top of 4th. 1-0 Colorado.

Frankly, I think it's almost by design. I think some people think Cole's kick is too slow and that Howard's still too unreliable to make the throw. I think they leave on first movement on purpose sometimes figuring they can beat the relay from Hamels to Howard.

Top of fourth:

Helton leadoff single.

Tulowitzki popped out. No advance.

Atkins Ks.

Torrealba 2 run homer to left on Hamels' 60th pitch.

Spilborghs pops to left.

3-0 Rockies. Bottom of 4th.

He brings the right leg up and back towards the rubber, but never crossing the rubber with his foot, allowing him to make the move to first. If that foot crosses the rubber while in the air he MUST go home or it is a balk. Hope this makes sense.

Cole looking a little bit out of control.

Bullpen is up - it's Durbin. Man.

Last chance for Cole to save this day.

Fowler deep fly out to left. Cook tags. 4-0.

Gonzalez barely beats throw to third, but is safe.

Helton pops out to shallow left.

4-0 bottom of 5th. Could have been worse I guess

Dobbs lines out to right.

J-Roll lines to SS. Inning over.

Blanton yanked.

WTF? Happ is in.

Double switch. Cairo in for Feliz.

Argh. Ball hits Happ. Safe all around - runner stayed at third. Happ's being tended to. Off lower leg.

Happ's hurting, limping.

Happ is done. Scott Eyre is in.

Happ wanted to stay in, so barring damage to the leg, he can probably go on Saturday.

Based loaded no outs for Gonzalez.

Big K! Eyre gets Gonzalez.

Fowler pops out to right. Runner tags. 5-3. Runner on second to third.

Well, just got back from CBP...exciting finish, but not the way we wanted. I think Cholley was going for the win today and to hell with tomorrow (Saturday) with the expectation the offense would grab the lead and Blanton could have gone the next three or four. Not to be. Some bad decision making out there by the pitchers today, trying to throw runners out at home and third as opposed to getting the sure outs at first. Could have been worse. Offense seemed to be sleepwalking for the first 4 innings or so. I would expect Happ to start on Saturday. He barely had a 'bullpen session' today, so assuming the bruise is not too bad, he should be good to go. Twas a gorgeous day for baseball, though.

Eh, after the way baseball handled the first half of game 5 in the World Series last year, and how they screwed the Twins this year with the less than 24 hour turnaround, how they've handled the whole steroid issue, how they handled the whole tied All-Star game and what they've done since - are we really going to notice yet another black-eye on baseball? Eh, after the way baseball handled the first half of game 5 in the World Series last year, and how they screwed the Twins this year with the less than 24 hour turnaround, how they've handled the whole steroid issue, how they handled the whole tied All-Star game and what they've done since - are we really going to notice yet another black-eye on baseball? Baseball's pretty much a perpetual black-eye anymore. xsmhx

Well, the Twins thing wasn't their fault. The Metrodome was in use Monday night. I suppose they could have removed the Yankees' right to elect to start on Wednesday, but then they're the ones getting screwed. There was no good way to get around that problem.

So why not start the Yanks vs Twins/Tigers series on Thursday and move Angels-Red Sox up to Wednesday? Again, it's all about the bean counters at MLB and TBS.

I edited my post before you replied.

As the owner of home field advantage, the Yankees had the choice to start on Wednesday with Thursday off or start Thursday and play on consecutive days.

The Yankees elected to play Wedesday, not the suits at MLB or TBS.

So, as I said in my edited post, they could have removed that right of choice, but then someone else would complain from the Yankee camp.

Do you have a link to that? I wasn't aware teams made the schedule.

Baseball could have easily made an exception and moved the game to Thursday, but they don't really care about players or fans, as evidenced time and again.

The other option was to play the game in Detroit. I realize the Twins won the coin toss and that's why it was in Minnesota, but they could have a stipulation in there that in order to win the coin toss and get the game you need to ensure that you can have the facility on the date and time when the game would be played. Heck, they flipped the coin at the start of September (or there about) - it's not like this wasn't a known possibility weeks in advance. If the Twins couldn't hold a tie-break game that night at their building, tough cookies - they shouldn't have gotten the home game.

If it was a coin toss, then I agree. I thought it was head-to-head record (something earned, not lucked into).

There is no coin toss, it is head to head record, the Twins got that changed after being sent to Chicago last year on a coin flip.

Apparently I'm a year late in getting that memo.

Irregardless, I'd still have it be whether you can host the game at the date and time required. If you can't, you can't have the game. It's silly for baseball, or any sport, to have its schedule dictated by another sport, especially when it compromises the fairness of what comes after (i.e. the winner of the Twins/Tigers game getting screwed with the quick turnaround). Since so many teams are in their own stadiums anymore (and the Twins will be next year) it shouldn't come up too often, but still needs to be dealt with.
