Yankee Stadium to host bowl game after 2010 college football season

The Big East now has a bowl in its backyard.
A Big East team will face a team from the Big 12 at Yankee Stadium in a new bowl game after the 2010 season.
The conferences and the New York Yankees announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to a four-year deal to play the first bowl in the Bronx since 1962.
The Big East, which has always considered New York its home turf, will send either its third or fourth selection to the yet-to-be-named bowl game. The Big 12 will send its seventh selection to play in the new $1.5 billion stadium.
If the Big 12 does not have enough bowl eligible teams, Notre Dame has agreed to take its place, providing it is available.
The game will be played between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Great - two 6-6 teams with no historical rivalry playing on Christmas day.
Attendance = 15,000 (after the first year lure wears off)

Probably be South Florida vs Texas Tech. Kinda like backyard. xlolx

Isn't that now like the 36th Bowl Game at the FBS level? So 72 teams make the post-season out of something like 120 teams? Even the NHL laughs at that! xlolx

This is a better deal for the Big East than the International Bowl, Texas Bowl or Papa John's Bowl. All bowls that Rutgers got stuck with.

Yeah like that. I'd much rather see the Scarlett Knights play at Yankee Stadium than in Toronto or Birmingham.

So the WAC gets two against MWC
New Mexico and Boise
one against CUSA
Hawaii
... and another against MWC provided PAC 10 doesn't step up
Poinsettia
Too bad they can't get one against the Bottom of the Pac10, BigXII, or Sun Belt.

I think it's great. Yankee Stadium has hosted some pretty fine football teams over the years, including Army, Notre Dame, Syracuse and Colgate.

The last thing the world needs is more bowl games. If they'd just make 7 wins the requirement some of these games would disappear.

Another worthless bowl game. Great.
And putting a football field in a baseball stadium is just plain stupid. It ruins the sanctity of both sports, and the field looks like crap, especially in New York in December when the grass is more like frozen tundra. They'd be better off just playing this game at Lambeau.

Let's see... NYC vs. Green Bay WI? And when was the last time you were in NYC in late Dec? Not usually very cold.
Too many bowl games. I agree. Get rid one some of them. This one sounds like a good idea. xnodx

If USF and a Big XII south team get selected to play in 20 degrees and snow, it would be the best bowl game of the year.

New York isnt as cold as Green Bay.
The Eagles, Steelers, Packers, and Bears play FB on natural grass in December and Jan and everyone survives-- it will be ok.
Actually this bowl makes more sense than most of these lower tier games. Yes it's cold but Christmas is a wonderful time to be in and visit NYC. People can come to the game and stay for New Years in NYC as well.

Maybe for the Big East. It offers a bowl for your third best team, but the Big XII sends their SEVENTH best team.
If you finish SEVENTH out of TWELVE you should not go to a bowl game. Bowl games are meant to be a reward, and I don't think we should reward people who finish in the bottom half of the pack.

That's not exactly what it will look like. There will be temporary seats put in up and down the sidelines, which will take away most of the field level seating. That's why the football configuration will be about 5,000 or seats less than the baseball configuration.
Keep in mind that the stadium was designed and built to hold football games. This isn't an afterthought.

Don't know about the others, but Green Bay has a sophisticated underground hydronic heating system to keep the turf healthy and playable. I doubt Yankee stadium has this sort of system to protect their field and I can see the turf manager being really, really p!ssed off when the game is over.
Oh, and my co-workers laughed at the idea of a bowl game in Yankee Stadium.

I don't doubt they have contingencies in mind, but you have to think they could have had a better picture of the configuration than one that puts the corners of the end zones into the dugouts or the outfield seats

WHat I meant was that the fans of the seventh ranked big 12 team would rather go to NY than Birmingham Alabama or Detroit.
Also plenty of 6 or 7 place teams already go to bowls. I wasnt arguing the point that another bowl game is needed, rather that this is more attractive than the Champs Sports or Motor City bowl.
Yes we have too many bowl games, but this one is better than many.

Its usually in the high 30's low 40's in NYC in december--not too bad at all.
The have plenty of time to get the field in shape for opening day. WTF are you so obsessed with the stupid grass at Yankee Stadium? You act as if a football game was never played up north in the cold before.

I think most baseball stadiums that can accomodate a football field usually go from one of the baselines to the opposite outfield, don't they? I saw one football game at Memorial in Baltimore and I'm pretty sure the back of the endzone was the third base line. xeyebrowx

Not at Yankee Stadium. As you can see from the photo below, the north end zone at the original Yankee Stadium was facing the bleachers. The south end zone was at home plate.
This is the same layout as the proposed diagram. The big difference seems to be that the new Yankee Stadium has less foul territory, so the field is much closer to the stands.
The more I think about this, the more I like it. There has been great football played at Yankee Stadium in the past.
Football is a cold weather sport, right? xnodx

Yankee Stadium hosts additional college football games; Army to play a home game at Yankee Stadium in 2011, 2012 and 2014
The New York Yankees announced today that Yankee Stadium will host additional college football games, with Army playing a home game at Yankee Stadium in 2011 vs. Rutgers, 2012 vs. Air Force and 2014 vs. Boston College.
The announcement comes on the heels of Monday's release that Notre Dame will host Army on November 20, 2010, marking the return of college football to the Yankees home Stadium for the first time since 1987.
Army played 38 times at the original Yankee Stadium, compiling a combined mark of 14-19-5 against Notre Dame, Illinois (1930, '47), Michigan (1945, '50), Navy (1930-31), Stanford (1928, '48), Syracuse (1960, '64), Air Force (1959), Columbia (1936), Oklahoma (1961), Pittsburgh (1962), Princeton (1942) and Southern California (1951).
While playing at the original Yankee Stadium vs. Notre Dame, Army won back-to-back national titles in 1944 and '45. In that same decade of the 1940s, they produced two Heisman Trophy winners in Johnny Blanchard (1945) and Glenn Davis (1946).
"When constructing Yankee Stadium, it was important that it serve as a viable venue for hosting multiple sporting events," said Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost. "We felt it was a natural fit that we carry the storied tradition of Army football at Yankee Stadium from the original Stadium to our new home."
"Playing football games at Yankee Stadium was a big part of Army's football history from the 1920s through the 1960s," said Army Athletic Director Kevin Anderson. "This exciting partnership with the Yankees allows the Army program to harken back to its past. Our fans will enjoy the state-of-the-art amenities offered by Yankee Stadium and will provide an unforgettable experience for our fans, players and the Corps of Cadets. We feel that being associated with a world-class organization like the Yankees will help carry our marketing and branding efforts to new heights.

I can vouch for Oakland-Alameda County stadium because I've been to A's games when I visited my Bay Area relatives. The Raiders' configuration is a 90 degree turn from the picture shown earlier in this thread of the Yankee Stadium config. The Raiders endzones run from the foul poles toward the dugouts. Al Davis completely sabotaged that stadium for football. There's a huge football-specific upper deck in dead center built for the Raiders that is "affectionately" referred to as Mount Davis. It remains covered for A's games.
You can make out the baseball diamond in this photo. Second base is at the 50. The lower level seats on the far side are temporary for football:
