Mid-season Shuffle: Gulf Coast Classic to Move?

Fans on TSPN are saying that the schools haven't been paid yet for last year and that they were still going back to a neutral site with that being said...unbelievable.

The 'Classic' formats are great when the $$$ comes rolling in, but it sure seems like there is a fair share of problems with it - when it comes to collecting on money or the games getting called off (ask PV about that one and their nine-game slate).


MOBILE, Ala. -- Kickoff for the Gulf Coast Classic is less than two months away, but the game has no contract with Ladd-Peebles Stadium and an official from one of the schools said he is considering options other than playing in Mobile.

Since 1974, the Classic had been an Alabama State home game in Mobile, as the Hornets left the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery once a year for the larger Ladd-Peebles and a devoted alumni base.

Most of these HBCU "Classics" are a crock of BS!

Most lack the advertising dollars needed to attract fans to the stands. Schools would be better off keeping most of their home games, maximizing their gate profits and forcing them to expand their stadiums. But we have too many Traditionalists in charge that want to keep their glory days of the 70's & 80's alive.

They are well-attended...are they not?

Some of them bust, but it seems like the ones that can hold a place on the schedule in a consistent spot, featuring consistent teams do very well.

The city of Mobile sponsered this, so its on them, not a promoter.

Most of them are like the State Fair Classic, Magic City Classic, and ect. The ones usually have bad match-ups or bad locations.

Most of the classics couldnt be played on campus. Look at the major ones like the Bayou, the Magic City, the Atlanta Football Classic and ect. All of those games draw crowds that far exceed the amount any of those schools can get on campus. Classics have their place, take a look at the Chicago Classic this weekend between Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State two of the worst teams not only in the SWAC but in FCS. Through all of that they still got over 45,000 to the ball game.

Why are you guys explaining something that TT already understands the concept behind...this is another one of his attempts to belittle what others do with their programs. One would think that Sam Houston has it all together, but it's not Sam Houston (they have other posters who don't put down on our conference with the passion that TT does). This guy comes to a discussion board and every post is deragatory and nitpicking... but he's Mod protected so he does it with inpunity. Although this is a Discussion Board and everyone (except those who supposedly monitor such things) recognizes his sneaky attempts to belittle other schools and programs. Sad really!

Trust me Mike, I and everyone else on this board knows how Texas Tuck works, I just try to pay him no attention for the most part.................xcoffeex
