If he throws 7+ shutout innings in his final start (on Saturday against the Twins), he'll become just the fourth American League pitcher since 1972 to post an ERA under 2.00.
Between 1964 and 1972, the AL ERA leader was under 2.00 five times, but since then it's only been done by Ron Guidry (1.74 in 1978), Roger Clemens (1.93 in 1990) and Pedro Martinez (1.74 in 2000).
Go Zack! xthumbsupx

Considering the era and the division/league he pitched in, Pedro's 2000 season was the best by a SP of all-time IMO.

Agreed. xnodx Only four other AL pitchers posted an ERA under 4.00 that year, and the runner-up (Clemens at 3.70) was nearly two full runs behind Pedro. xeekx

If only he played for a good team, his win total would reflect his ERA, and he would get more serious consideration for the Cy Young

Greinke got his 16th win yesterday. I used to watch him pitch for the Wilmington Blue Rocks. If he doesn't win the Cy this year, he should do it soon.

17 wins and a low 2.0 ERA should get him serious consideration for the Cy Young. Especially since that 17th win would be against a Twins team still fighting for the AL Central crown. Frankly, it's more impressive that CC's win total with the insane hitting Yankees. I'd chalk up a couple of CC's additional wins to games where the Yankees just bludgeon someone with their bats. But I don't know if that is the case or not. Just more impressed with Zack's win total and ERA for the Royals! xeekx xeekx

I think he's a lock for the Cy Young. Hernandez has been great this year, but Greinke is almost 1/2 a run better than him in ERA and likely will have the same number or 1-2 less wins than Felix.

No way should Sabbathia get the nod over Greinke. Greinke's better in every statistical category (ERA, WHIP, CG, SHO, K's, BB's, OBA, etc) than Sabbathia. The only thing CC has over Greinke is the total number of wins, and considering how close they are in that number, and considering that CC pitches behind the best lineup in the American League for the best team in the American League, it would be a crime to not give Greinke the Cy Young. xpeacex

I saw him pitch in HS and know his HS coach Sonny Wise pretty well.
I watched the last game of his senior year where Apopka lost to Oviedo- Apopka also had Michael Taylor (current Phils farmhand) playing RF- in the regionals and sat next to the scout from the Giants and behind the Reds scout (who had signed my nephew a few years earlier). There were at least half a dozen MLB clubs represented in the stands.
Greinke was hitting 94 on the Giants scout's gun and when he broke off a curve at 78 the scout just looked at me, then looked at the gun, shook his head, and said,"That's special..."

Well to be honest, the last time I checked his record he was 12-8 and that was in early August lol. xlolx I am just saying that if the Royals had given him more run support in the middle of the season (when he went from like 8-1 to 11-8) he would be well over 20 wins by now, probably around 22-23.

That's because KC increased the run support for him to almost 4 runs a game since then.
As for cy Young:
Felix had a great year. Doc was great. CC did even more than could have been asked: you take out just a couple bad games and he'd be right there. What CC has done for this staff, who lost their best pitcher over the past 3 years, he's been a workhorse.
But grienke...he is a special kid who looked great this year. And he'll deserve the award this season that he will surely win.

Greinke goes for the sub-2.00 ERA at the Metrodome today (3:10 local time). Again, seven shutout innings will do it. (Greinke has gone 7+ with 0 ER six times so far this year.)
That said, I do root for the Twins, and want to see them make the playoffs. So maybe they can push across a couple unearned runs against Greinke (or tag the Royals' bullpen late) and get a strong outing from Blackburn . . . because I'd really love to see Zack do this.

Scoreless game heading to the fourth. Neither pitcher has allowed a hit yet.

Mauer singles home Nick Punto from third with two outs in the sixth. 1-0 Twins. Looks like Greinke's ERA will stay north of 2.00.

If it was against anyone else, I would be rooting for Greinke to keep his ERA under 2.00 but since it is against the Twins I'm happy the Twins scratched that run across.

Yeah, beating Greinke would be huge for the Twins. This would put enormous pressure on the Tigers. Young's base-clearing double was huge. Only time all season Greinke has given up four runs in an inning.
KC now in the bullpen in the 7th. Greinke finishes the season with a 2.16 ERA. Still should be good enough for the Cy Young.

Greinke is definitely the favorite to win. All the sportswriters seem to look at him as #1, with good reason. Considering the fact he pitches for a crappy team, his win total should play little in the decision (in fact, wins should always be low on the importance scale). His run support has been terrible, something he has no control over. He leads the league in ERA by almost half a run, WHIP, ERA+ (by 39 points!!); is 2nd in Ks, K/9, complete games, and shutouts. Greinke has had a remarkable season and it's a shame that the Royals will never be competitive with the absurd economic structure of the MLB and will have to trade this impressive young pitcher in the near future to the Yankees/Red Sox.
As Jayson Stark points out (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=4526015) on ESPN.com, Greinke "had the best ERA in the AL before the All-Star break (2.12). He's had the best ERA in the AL since the All-Star break (1.97). He started the season by giving up two earned runs in his first 45 innings. He goes into his final start of the season with two earned runs allowed in his past 42 innings." The man has been unbelievably consistent.

Greinke gets it easily. Justin Verlander has to get some mention. He has the nastiest stuff in baseball.
