Patterson Steps Down, Citing Health Concerns

MACOMB, Ill.- In his 11th season with the Western Illinois football program, head coach Don Patterson has announced he will step down from his head coaching role due to personal health concerns, Friday, Sept. 25th.

Patterson, who was diagnosed with tonsillar cancer last July, missed most of the 2008 preseason camp and the first seven games of the year as he underwent treatment for cancer.

Tough break for WIU, but perhaps this is something they can rally behind...

Patterson has done a great job for the program, so best of luck to him in getting his health back in line.

WIU was 5-2 last year before Patterson came back onto the side lines.
WIU went 1-3 after he return and one of those games went to OT (Ill St).

I hope the team does well through this adversity.

He is a class act and a fine coach. Thoughts and prayers will continue to be with Coach Patterson, his family and the WIU family.

I am sad to see him step down, but obviously his health is the main priority. Many great memories while he was coach, more importantly, what a tremendous person.
