Wide Receiver- Jamere Valentine: Leads the receivers with 17 receptions, 178 yards, and 3 touchdowns.
Defensive Back- Darrell Pasco: Leads the conference in both pass break-ups (5) and kickoff returns (27.0 ypr). This places him tied for 19th and 34th in the nation, respectively.
Linebacker- Dion DuBose: Leads the Eagles with 26 tackles and 1 fumble recovery.
What to Look For
Elon has been a pass happy team for the past few years and has a well established system for throwing the ball. Georgia Southern is trying to get the air game going and fully implement Chris Hatcher's style of offense. Even with such a pass fiesta going on, both teams will need to establish a running game to take pressure off the quarterback and spread the defense out. The team that runs the ball best will have an advantage here.
Darrell Pasco recorded his first interception in Georgia Southern's last game against Western Carolina. He has been tabbed to cover Terrell Hudgins this week, creating one of the most interesting matchups so far. Pasco is listed at a generous 6-0 while Hudgins is a solid 6-2. Pasco says he's excited to cover the number one receiver in the conference. We'll have to see if his coverage skills can best Hudgins height advantage.
After a thumping by South Dakota State, Georgia Southern beat Western Carolina and built some confidence. The Eagles also picked up a conference win, placing them at the top of the SoCon, along with Furman, to start the year. They no doubt want to win this game to establish a turnaround point for the season. A win here, and Georgia Southern stays at the top of the SoCon standings.
Elon blasted Davidson and then hammered Presbyterian to start off 2-0 before falling 35-7 at Wake Forest. The Phoenix is hoping to get back into the top 10 and avoid a bad start to conference play.
This game will settle a lot of questions about both teams and probably set the tone for the rest of the season.
