he didn't get two years for shooting himself. he got two years for carrying an unlicensed concealed weapon in NYC.
Shooting himself just got him caught.

I know - nobody would have known he was carrying if he hadn't pulled the waterheaded move of blowing off his own leg.

What can you say, each state has their own laws. If Plax had gotten caught in a different state, he probably would have received less jail time. New York is one of the strictest on gun laws.
The next question is what does Delonte West get for carrying 3 guns in Maryland. What was he carrying you ask? Well the answer is a Beretta 9mm in West's waistband, a Ruger .357 magnum strapped to his leg and a shotgun in a guitar case slung over his back while driving a three-wheeled motorcycle called a Can-Am Spyder and cutting off an officer in the process.
Police charged West with two criminal counts of carrying a handgun for the Ruger and the Beretta, and issued him a traffic citation for driving "in excess of reasonable and prudent speed," court records show. [Officer] Ellis said West was within his rights to carry the shotgun.

All I know is I am not going to mess with West if I see him.

I agree with what others have said - sure the Vick comparisons make it odd, but that's why location matters. Plaxico did it in NYC, hence the tough sentence. If he does that in Erie PA then he probably gets off with a much lighter sentence.
As for Delonte West, yeah, scary stuff. Although I'm pretty sure he has a tough history of dealing with depression - not sure how that figures into his situation, but despite the fact of what he was carrying, there may be mitigating circumstances.

He was on his way to pick his girl up at the saloon.

In most places I consider normal this would be a month at most, but probably probation. Crazy ass NYC laws.

In most places there aren't 8 million living on top of each other. No place for guns in this town, let alone concealed handguns.

I dunno. I've held concealed carry permits in a few states and they all preach that you put your piece away if you enter an establishment that serves alcohol. Had he been in Arizona, he still would have been in serious violation of gun laws, even if he was CCW-licensed.

Utah doesn't forbid going into a drinking establishment with a legally concealed weapon, but it does forbid drinking with one. It really isn't the people that get the permits you have to worry about folks. xpeacex

If everyone is allowed to have them there shouldn't be a problem. Currently the only ones carry would be criminals who have/will commit a crime using it. Well those and 'tards like Plax. The crazy knife rules up there are about the same to me. If someone wants to hurt someone they will find a way, its the victims that don't have a defensive weapon that can be hurt.

There are still some penalties, but mandatory 2 years is rediculous.

Oh yeah! Now that you mentioned it, the law in Arizona just changed in July:
http://arizonaccwpermit.com/2009/07/14/arizona-restaurant-concealed-carry-law-signed-by-governor-brewer/
Didn't realize that CCW carry in bars/liquor-serving restaurants when not consuming alcohol is now legal in 41 states. I was behind the times. That's good news. xthumbsupx
The impact of the new law is substantial as prior to its passage, a person that was otherwise permitted to carry a concealed weapon had to secure the firearm in their vehicle if they wanted to enter an establishment that served alcohol. This essentially meant that a person dining in a restaurant that served alcohol was denied their right to carry a concealed weapon for their own self defense or the defense of their family. By having to leave the firearm secured in their vehicle, it also made the firearm vulnerable to theft should a vehicle theft or break in occur while they were dining inside.
