View Full Version : Experience would appear to matter ...

I was thinking about the experience level of the past QB's in the title game, and doing a *very* quick mental run-through in my mind of the winning QB's in past I-AA championship games, I've come up with a limited number of underclassmen who started ... and most of those were juniors ... but I'm drawing blanks on what class some of the winning starters were. Anyone able to fill in the gaps ?

First, I don't know why I'm drawing such a blank w/ the YSU QB's ...

Anyways, I do remember some sophomore QB's getting some playing time in the title game (last one I recall seeing major playing time was JR Revere in 1999) ....

With the potential for two sophomores to get the start on Friday (assuming Ritchie doesn't start for ASU), it would appear that for perhaps the first time a sophomore starter will take their team to a title unless I'm overlooking someone (a distinct possibility)

I'm quite convinced that JR's time in 1999 was some of the best big-game seasoning and it served him well in GSU's 2000 title run.

DeBusk was Sophomore in 88. He injuried his knee against W&M in the 89 playoffs. Then had one more shot in 90 and we lost at Reno in triple overtime in the quarters. DeBusk was a special kinda qb. Marshall fans hated him :D

I just love seeing how wrong my memory is ;)

I think I've really stepped in it trying to remember the YSU QB's, but so far no one has blown me out of the water there ....

I'm only 100% sure of the GSU signal callers :D

John Edwards in 2001 was a Junior. He also played a good portion of the 2000 game as a Sophomore, after the Griz starter went out.

Thanks ... I for some reason thought he was a junior in 2000....

Yes, he played a bunch in that championship game and was not rattled.

Justin Haddix of Western Kentucky was a freshman during the 2002 championship season. Ironically, I don't think he ever played as well again in his final three years.
