Did not see this until now, but found this to be relatively humorous...the almighty Memphis Tigers paying the former Big East Commish to get them in one of the six BCS conferences...
Do they have a shot?
Former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese has been hired by the University of Memphis as a consultant to assist the Tigers athletic program in its efforts to gain membership in a Bowl Championship Series conference.
Tranghese stepped down as Big East commissioner at the end of June after 30 years with the conference, including the last 19 as commissioner. Tigers athletic director R.C. Johnson said Tranghese, who was hired Aug. 1, is being paid $5,000 per month from private donated funds.
"His role is to help us and advise us," Johnson said. "He asked me: 'What's my charge?' I said, 'There are six BCS conferences. Just get us in one.'"

Considering their location, they could very well go SEC or Big Ten, or Big East/ACC in a bit of a reach.

Big Ten will never take them -- they're interested in one team, and one team only. The Notre Dame Fightin' Irish.

I think the Big 10 would also consider Rutgers, but their is a 0% chance Memphis will go to the Big 10 or SEC.
Their only shot in the Big East, why do you think they hired the former Big East commish?

B10 and B12 are primarily composed of Midwestern Land Grant institutions, (public). Neither conference is going to stray far from those roots.

True, but if they want to expand I believe no other midwestern land grant institutions are left to add.
They can poach each other's conference( Missouri) but I cant re-call any midwestern land grant schools that arent already in a BCS conference and can ramp up to Big 10 level quickly.

They have a great shot at the Big East - heck, they're already playing there in basketball and if Louisville can play in the Big East why not Memphis. Of all the schools out there, Memphis is probably candidate #1 when it comes to a school entering the Big East. If there ever is a Big East breakup (not a sure thing) then Memphis will be the first team in.

I assume you mean Memphis plays at the big east level in basketball, and they are in C-USA. But you are right as Memphis is very similar to the other universities recently added to the Big East (Louisville, USF, Cincy)

I definitely don't see the ACC expanding anytime soon because their whole goal back in the early 2000s was simply to get 12 teams in the conference for a championship game. They've done that so I don't see them expanding again. The Big East, though, seems like a conference ready and willing to invite new teams in, especially if a conference like the Big Ten is looking to potentially steal a team like Pitt in the future.. Shoot if Boston College can play in the southeastern-based ACC, and La Tech can play in the West Coast-based WAC, then why can't a southern team like Memphis play in the Mid-Atlantic/New England based Big East?
