Even the teams in the late 80s were before my time. I do know that no Twins SS in the last 15 years deserves to be on an all time team.

If you saw GCA play, you're older than I thought. xeekx

I put Whitey at CF because of my fondness for his broadcasting. Never saw him play obviously, but I know he was the best CF in franchise history.

Never saw Bunning or Roberts play either, but I did meet Robin Roberts. Helluva nice guy.

Btw, it pained me to put Abreu in there as well. Feel free to substitute an old-timey right fielder.

David Wright is already the best 3rd baseman in franchise history.

Also, Nolan Ryan did nothing as a Met (except in the '69 World Series). Roger Craig won more games. I would pick David Cone.

Agree with the Carter pick, but Jerry Grote was a GREAT defensive catcher.

Dave Kingman?

My favorite UNC player was Al Wood. 1980 Olympic Team, 4th pick in the 1981 draft, NCAA Semi-Final record of 39 points in UNC's win over Virginia and Ralph Sampson. Lost to Indiana in the Championship game though. 3rd leading scorer in UNC history when he was done.

I played against Al and his brother Morris in high school... they were really good. They had another guy named Ronnie Hinson (college teammate of mine) who was about 6'7" so their front line was 6'9", 6'7", 6'6" which was huge in the mid 70's especially for a small school.

Our front line was 6'10", 6'8", 6'5" and our two biggest starters made the NBA while the other play at Pitt and had a long career in Europe.

As you can imagine it was a clash of the titans in small school Georgia hoops in the mid 70's.

El Guapo for RHP from the bullpen? No Ted Williams or Carl Yastrzemski for LF? xeekx xeekx I like Trot Nixon and all but over Dewey Evans? xeekx xeekx

Thoughts running through my head (and not sure I thought of everybody xoopsx):

IMHO, Papelbon, Lester, Ellsbury and Pedroia haven't played long enough yet. I bolded the picks where I could form a quick opinion of an all time player.

C: Carlton Fisk
1B: Jimmie Foxx, Mo Vaughn and Carl Yastrzemski. Foxx better over entire career, Vaughn better as a Red Sox, but how do you leave Yaz off the Red Sox all time team?????
2B: Bobby Doerr with Pete Runnells in reserve.
SS: Joe Cronin, Nomar Garciaparra, Johnny Pesky and Rico Petrocelli
3B: Wade Boggs then Jimmy Collins and Frank Malzone
LF: Ted Williams then Yaz and Rice with a gratuitous reference to the Man Child.
CF: Fred Lynn (but only 5 years with the Sox), Dom Dimaggio, Tris Speaker and Reggie Smith.
RF: Dwight Evans, then Jackie Jensen, Harry Hooper and Tony Conigliaro
DH: David Ortiz

Starting RHP: Pedro Martinez, Cy Young, Smokey Joe Wood, Roger Clemens, Luis Tiant, Bill Monbouquette, Dennis Eckersley
Starting LHP: Lefty Grove, Mel Parnell, Bruce Hurst, George Herman Ruth
Closer: Ellis Kinder, Dick Radatz, Sparky Lyle, Bob Stanley, Lee Smith, Jeff Reardon, Tom Gordon
Overall Relief Pitcher: Bob Stanley

*** If not for injuries, would Freddy, Nomah and Tony C. have been locks at their position?
*** If not for overuse and playing for some truly dreadful teams (during my youth), Dick "The Monster" Radatz (6'5" 240 lbs. with 100+ MPH heat) might be the all time closer in baseball history.

I must have misunderstood this whole thread. I chose my favorite players at each position. I didn't realize it was an all time greats list otherwise I would've chosen Yaz, Dewey, Lynn, etc.
