SoCon Announces Week Two Football Players of the Week
Shuman, Lerner, Awuah and Camay Receive Weekly Honors
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Sept. 12. Elon running back Jamal Shuman was selected as the Offensive Player of the Week while Furman defensive back Max Lerner was named Defensive Player of the Week. Chattanooga running back Chris Awuah was tabbed as the Freshman of the Week while the Mocs’ place kicker, Craig Camay, was the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week are selected by the league office.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jamal Shuman, Elon, So., RB
Shuman rushed for a career-high 190 yards on 26 carries in No. 10 Elon’s 41-7 win at Presbyterian. He was one of two backs to rush for over 100 yards for the Phoenix, marking the first time since 1999 that two Elon backs rushed for at least 100 yards in the same game. In two games this season, the sophomore from Fayetteville, N.C., has rushed for 305 yards - just 34 yards shy of his nine-game total from a year ago.
Other Nominees: Marquel Pittman (Western Carolina), Blue Cooper (Chattanooga), Dustin Taliaferro (Samford), Mike Rucker (Wofford), Devon Moore (Appalachian State) and Tersoo Uhaa (Furman).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Max Lerner, Furman, Jr., DB
Lerner keyed Furman's 38-20 Southern Conference road win at Chattanooga with a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown on the game's first offensive play. The Birmingham, Ala., native totaled four tackles, including 1.5 for loss in the victory, which was the Paladins' 15th straight over UTC.
Other Nominees: Erik Peterson (Samford), Andre Campbell (Elon), Chris Collins (Western Carolina), Mike Niam (Wofford) and J.D. Dothard (Chattanooga).
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Chris Awuah, Chattanooga, Fr., RB
Awuah totaled 93 all-purpose yards against Furman, including a 52-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. Starting his second straight game, the Marietta, Ga., native rushed for 34 yards on eight carries and had three receptions for 59 yards and the one score.
Other Nominees: George Richardson (Western Carolina), Darion Sutton (Samford), Adam Shreiner (Elon), Jerry Williams (Furman), Darreion Robinson (Georgia Southern) and Stephon Shelton (Wofford).

Camay was perfect in Chattanooga’s SoCon opener against Furman on Saturday night, converting 2-of-2 field goal attempts and 2-of-2 PATs. The field goals came from 35 and 42 yards out and helped the senior from Marietta, Ga., to improve to 8-for-9 in his career on kicks from inside 40 yards. Camay also successfully converted an onsides kick on the opening play of the game.
