I can't say I'm embarrassed that JMU played even with a BCS conference school, but I am dissapointed in the outcome.

JMU outgained the Terps 417 - 359, came back from a 21 - 6 deficit, and was in a position to win the game. In my opinion, what killed JMU was:

1) Penalties (11 - 105 yards), including a couple of illegal blocking killers of 20 - 25 yard gains, nullifying 1st downs.

2) Overly conservative play calling on a set of downs after they held MD to a punt at about the 10 min mark of the 4th quarter. At the time, JMU was up 28 - 21.

3) As noted many times, poor kicking game

Negatives:

As has already been said, JMU kicking game sucks. Punts were short with no hang time, kickofffs were mostly short, and FG:
-missed PAT by Goff
-blocked 45 yd attempt at the end of the 1st half because Goff kicked the ball only a few feet in the air.
-missed 41 yard attempt in OT by Wright because Goff sucked.

-Kick coverage team allowed MD to run back a kickoff. Other than that weren't too bad.

-MM/Durden going conservative on the last 3 possessions in the 4th: playing not to lose:
JMU up 35-28
1. run 0 yds, run 3 yds, run 2 yds on 3rd and 7, punt
Game now tied 35 all:
2. run 0 yds, OUTSIDE run about 23 yard to MD 30 negated by holding call on JMU CENTER xrolleyesx that put JMU back on own 38 with 4 plus minutes left, run 3 yds on 2nd and 19, incomplete pass, punt
3. run 8 yds, incomplete pass, run 17 yds 1st down, incomplete pass, complete pass 4 yds, run 1 yd on 3rd and 6, punt
OT possession:
Run 1 yard, run 0 yards, incomplete pass, missed 41 yd FG Wide Right

-Penalties 11 for 105 (to only 5 for 50 for MD): (I counted 12, but I think one was declined)
2 delay of games and 3 false starts. 2 of those 1st half false starts appeared to be the jitters of center Donnie Smith. This is where it hurt JMU to be playing their 1st game against Maryland who already had a game under their belt.

The interference on cornerback Cuffee that gave MD the ball at the JMU 3 yd line that lead to their 3rd TD was BS. The ball was totally out of bounds and uncatchable. You can’t have interference on an uncatchable pass. One of the several times MM went ballistic. He was still yelling at the side judge 3-4 minutes after the call after Maryland scored.

The 2nd interference call against Cuff in JMU territory on the Terps 4th TD drive was BS as well. Courtesy of JCSuperska on the JMU page on the CAA Zone who said he was using an s-video cord to run the ESPN 360 feed on a laptop to a big HD TV. He said similar to what I and many other JMU fans said about the 1st pass INT call. On this second pass INT call: (Cuffee) “went straight up with his back to the defender, maintained a vertical position, and literally DID NOT MAKE CONTACT with the Maryland player. I backtracked the stream during the next "commercial break" (i.e. the two minutes of a black screen after the TD) and watched it about 10 times. The ref didn't throw the flag until after the ball was dropped, and there was simply no contact made from the defender; that was a disgusting call.”

3 holding calls. The one that hurt the worst was the one I mentioned with 4+ minutes in the 4th that negated an about 23 yard run. That was again an outside run and the JMU center was called for holding. In all fairness, the Maryland starting NT was listed at 6’5”, 315, and the starting DT was listed at 6’4, 325

-2 chop block calls. One of those negated a 15 yd run on 3rd down in the 1st half. Chop block?? I can't remember the last time I saw one of those called. And 2 in one game?xnutsx

Oh come on Newbill, against UNC and Duke that was embarrassing. Against MD was much better. There were many positives, and it was far from embarrassing.

Positives:

-DIDN’T TURN THE BALL OVER! Breaking in 2 new QBs, and neither threw an INT, and other than a bobbled snap by Dudzick, neither fumbled. None of the running backs or receivers put the ball on the carpet once. JMU won the turnover battle 2-0 with the pick 6 and the punt Maryland fumbled.

JMU has a QB! Dudzick I think cemented his status as the starter.
Dudzick: 14 carries for 112 yards, includeing that 70 yarder that put JMU up 35-28, and 9 of 15 passing for 141 yards, 2 TDs, no INTs.
Thorpe: 8 carries, 51 yards, 1 of 2 passing, 8 yards. After that 3rd Qtr possession when Thorpe tried to run with it instead of pitching it when he should have he didn’t play again.

-Total offense outgained MD 417 to 359.
268 yards rushing on 42 carries to 123 on 32 for MD.

-Defense played ok. The scoreboard says 38, but it was 35 in regulation, The defense gave up 28 of those points, but the Terps had good field position much of the game due to the poor JMU kicking/punting. The secondary got beat a few times, but did better than I expected with 4 of 5 positions new starters (McGee is listed as a new starter, but I read he started at corner 12 games his rFr yr, 2 his rSo yr, and 5 last yr. De line looked good. Too bad JD Skolintsky had to get suspended for his senior year and isn’t with the Dukes instead of on the Redskins practice squad. Pat Williams was all over the field at LB. Didn’t see much out of Veney at LB though.

Opening play of game McGee returned the kickoff 50 yards. Notice how after that the Terps next 5 kickoffs were all short trying to kick away from McGee? McGee had 2 punt returns of 4 and 14 yards. He missed one chance at a return when he was taken to the locker room in the 2nd half for maybe 10-15 min for what I assumed was cramping?

JMU had at least 5k fans there. Maybe 10k Some MD fans thought ¼ of the 40k plus crowed was JMU:

Oh you should hear the MD fans whining about the JMU game. Their all upset about barely beating a 1AA team in OT. They were upset last year too when they "only beat Delaware by a TD". I have always routed against MD football because their fans are arrogant (at least the ones that I know) and think they should be competing for the ACC Championship every year and how great the ACC Conference is. They think they should beat 1AA teams by 50 points. This has been a great year for me pointing out the W&M and Richmond ACC wins to my arrogant and ignorant MD fan friends. I was very dissapointed to hear the end of the game on the radio on the way home from the devastating loss to Richmond.

Oh come on Newbill, against UNC and Duke that was embarrassing. Against MD was much better. There were many positives, and it was far from embarrassing.

Positives:

-DIDN’T TURN THE BALL OVER! Breaking in 2 new QBs, and neither threw an INT, and other than a bobbled snap by Dudzick, neither fumbled. None of the running backs or receivers put the ball on the carpet once. JMU won the turnover battle 2-0 with the pick 6 and the punt Maryland fumbled.

JMU has a QB! Dudzick I think cemented his status as the starter.
Dudzick: 14 carries for 112 yards, includeing that 70 yarder that put JMU up 35-28, and 9 of 15 passing for 141 yards, 2 TDs, no INTs.
Thorpe: 8 carries, 51 yards, 1 of 2 passing, 8 yards. After that 3rd Qtr possession when Thorpe tried to run with it instead of pitching it when he should have he didn’t play again.

-Total offense outgained MD 417 to 359.
268 yards rushing on 42 carries to 123 on 32 for MD.

-Defense played ok. The scoreboard says 38, but it was 35 in regulation, The defense gave up 28 of those points, but the Terps had good field position much of the game due to the poor JMU kicking/punting. The secondary got beat a few times, but did better than I expected with 4 of 5 positions new starters (McGee is listed as a new starter, but I read he started at corner 12 games his rFr yr, 2 his rSo yr, and 5 last yr. De line looked good. Too bad JD Skolintsky had to get suspended for his senior year and isn’t with the Dukes instead of on the Redskins practice squad. Pat Williams was all over the field at LB. Didn’t see much out of Veney at LB though.

Opening play of game McGee returned the kickoff 50 yards. Notice how after that the Terps next 5 kickoffs were all short trying to kick away from McGee? McGee had 2 punt returns of 4 and 14 yards. He missed one chance at a return when he was taken to the locker room in the 2nd half for maybe 10-15 min for what I assumed was cramping?

JMU had at least 5k fans there. Maybe 10k Some MD fans thought ¼ of the 40k plus crowed was JMU:

Anyway.... I am severly upset with the special teams play. I was also upset with MM's play calling there near the end of the game. But to think that we cannot hit a FG from outside 30 yards is scary. Guess we really will be going for it on 4th down pretty much every time this year.

Also, I honestly believe that if we hadn't of spent most of the 1st quarter playing flippy flop with our qb's, we could have eeked out another td or two and the game would have been completely different. Purely speculation though and by no means is an excuse for losing.

It was a frustrating loss, but in retrospect I don't have many complaints.

- Given the past two efforts against UNC and Duke it was clear we had to keep turnovers in check, which we did.

- It was fun to compete in an ACC game for 4+ quarters instead of the 5 minutes we've grown accustomed to.

- So many have counted the Dukes out in this post-Landers era and given the uncertainty around the QB position (and to a lesser extent the RB position), I feel confident that JMU will continue to be a team to be reckoned with in the CAA.

- Drew Dudzik and Jamal Sullivan seem to be the real deal, and senior TE Mike Caussin is as steady as ever.

- After JMU's pick-6, the JMU crowd erupted into a CAA! CAA! chant...reminiscent of George Mason's run to the Final Four.

- Scotty McGee had surgery in the off-season and word was he was out of shape and overweight. He performed admirably and I'm sure he'll be back at full strength by the time the CAA schedule starts up.

Negatives:

- The kicking game really needs significant work

- Penalties were a problem, but some of the pass interference ones were really borderline (and that's giving the refs the benefit of the doubt)

Maybe against UNC, but against Duke it was 7-7 until less than a min in the 1st half and 14-7 until early in the 3rd Qtr.
