Especially considering we had our backups in half the 3rd quarter and all the 4th against the no. 10 team in the country's starters. The bobkitties had their starters in almost the whole game and couldn't put up a TD against Michigan State? xnodxxlolxxlolx

I didn't see this article until today from the Oakland Tribune. We gave Cal a good wakeup call:


There may have been some who questioned why No. 8 Cal was wasting its time with a Football Championship Subdivision opponent Saturday. Don't include the Bears defensive players among that group.

Cal's defense was forced to make some dramatic early adjustments before the Bears rolled to a 59-7 victory over Eastern Washington in front of 58,083 at Memorial Stadium. The Eagles hung around for most of the first half, putting together sustained drives with a short passing game that gave the Old Blues in attendance some nervous moments.

But the Bears tinkered with their defensive scheme, dropping more players into coverage and silencing the Eagles the rest of the way.

"I feel like we learned a lot," said Cal linebacker Mychal Kendricks, who led the Bears in tackles for the second straight game to open the season with 14. "Eastern Washington is not a team to be taken lightly. We might have come out a little slow in the first quarter. We had to make those adjustments."

With the Bears leading 14-7 early in the second quarter, linebacker Mike Mohamed sacked Nichols and forced a fumble. Kendricks recovered and returned it 45 yards to the Eagles 5-yard line. He was run down by Eastern Washington running back Taiwan Jones, a former sprint star at Deer Valley High School.

"I caught myself looking at the big screen as I was running," Kendricks said. "That could have messed me up. I should have had that touchdown."

Like I've been saying, the kid has some nasty speed!

First-glad there appear to be no serious injuries on either side, and so hopefully each team got some of what it needed here.

Just wanted to comment on your team. Score wasn't indicative of how it felt in person; you guys have a nice team...disciplined, etc., like your coach. Nichols is a very good QB...I can see why he was Big Sky Conf MVP, not a rocket arm but GREAT vision & decision making; you guys tackle well fundamentally (several plays where your guys stopped someone cold, good position, wrapped, etc....certainly a few where your guys lacked speed to be in that position and we got some runs that way). I think your coach tried a couple of 4th downs in 'too' risky a spot & gave us short field, but hey shows balls.

I will take exception to the other thread about us having starters at the end of game...full 2nd (or more) team Offense in by late Q3, same on D except DBs stayed a little longer. I could tell you guys were subbing later in Q3 & Q4 too; I just think our depth made those last couple drives work even running simple stuff.

Anyway-I wish you guys well. I guess U. Montana is supposed to be the king of the BSC, but given how solid you guys look I can't imagine you don't give them a run. Seem like class kids from the comments I read and their on-field demeanor....good straight forward coach....reasons to feel good about your program. Good luck in Conf & hope you make a good playoff run.
