The legend, pretty much, has been written. Two years ago, schools from a far away subdivision formerly known as I-AA only scheduled the Royalty of college football every once in a great while - only for a six-figure guarantee check, of course, and the “smaller” schools never, ever expected to win. Then Jerry Moore, Armanti Edwards, Dexter Jackson and the rest of the Appalachian State Mountaineers turned the world upside down with an upset for the ages. You know the story: Jackson’s 68 yard touchdown pass to “shush” the crowd, the Michigan radio announcers at halftime saying, “Are you sitting down?", Edwards leading Appalachian State on a 69 yard drive to retake the lead in the closing minutes (ending in a Julian Rauch field goal), and that famous missed blocking assignment that allowed all-American Corey Lynch to block Michigan’s attempt to salvage the win in the closing second.

It was an FCS Miracle in Michigan - but to most casual football fans it was a once-in-a-lifetime upset, one that never will be repeated. As far as the larger college football world is concerned, there only ever was one FCS over FBS upset in college football history, and the time for that has passed.

But FCS fans know this isn’t true. Not only have there been many, many wins over FBS teams in the 30+ year history of I-AA/FCS football, there will be a couple more this weekend to add to the legend. In fact, most of the FBS scalps that FCS teams have gotten over the years could almost not be considered upsets at all.

The writer doesn't know anything about what's happening at UCA. Dick isn't starting. Hawaii is hurting. This game will be close..maybe even an upset. xrulesxxlolx

No. 5 Villanova at Temple (FBS). You can argue that Temple, now in the MAC and long the local FBS whipping boy of the East, isn’t the same team that has been a laughingstock over the years: they’ve got a mammoth offensive line, led by tight end Steve Maneri, who will cause some pain among teams of the MAC as the season progresses. But with an anemic offense breaking a new quarterback, perhaps Villanova linebacker Osayi Osunde and the rest of the Wildcat defense isn’t the best way to break him in. Villanova boasted one of the best defenses in all of FCS last year, and almost the entire defense returns.

Thursday kicks off with an old-fashioned FBS mismatch. Temple doesn’t stand a chance against one of the best teams in FCS in the inaugural “Mayor’s Cup". Villanova beat them 23-20 the last time out at Lincoln Financial Field (home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles), and they’ll beat them again.

St. Cloud State (D-II) at No. 19 Maine. These ain’t the Huskies you’re thinking of. These Huskies hail from Minnesota, and though they lost to powerful Augustana 38-16 behind senior quarterback Mitch Watkins. Maine, on the other hand, features a team filled with tough customers like quarterback Jake Brusko (1,353 all-purpose yards, 12 TDs) and running back Jared Turcotte (625 yards, 7 TDS).

It’s a long trip, and while the Huskies might give Maine an early run, the Black Bears won’t get run down. They should emerge the victors here, and Jack Cosgrove’s troops will start off the season with a big “W".

No. 24 Eastern Kentucky at Indiana (FBS). This one is all about the rotating running back that the Colonels will employ (C.J. Walker, Aaron Bradley, anc Cody Watts) versus the green Indiana defensive tackles, both underclassmen. The Hoosiers, who sported a 3-9 record last year, might have a problem running the ball against Chris Jones (46 tackles, 6 sacks) and the always-tough Eastern Kentucky defense, too. It won’t help that they’re breaking in a new quarterback, too: Ben Chappell.

A Thursday upset in the making? I don’t see i thappening. But EKU simply has too much they need to replace: Quarterback Allan Holland. Safety Brandon Gathof. Linebacker Tyjuan Jones. Indiana is a young team that might struggle in the Big Ten, but they should ultimately beat the young Colonels. It will be close, but the Hoosiers will prevail.
