How did Savannah State get a game with them while we didn't? :( I guess they didn't want to get spanked by anyone in-state in their first year. :D

Good article on the schedule. GSU is getting paid only 400,000 for the game according to the article.

That seems to be the going rate for non-counter FCS programs to play BCS teams. Albany is getting $350,000 plus travel to play at Cincinatti.

I can't believe Alabama actually scheduled Georgia State. A first year program? Their cheerleaders could probably beat them. That is nothing short of complete insanity.

So Bama tunes up on Georgia State the week before the Iron Bowl. Also, who is Shorter? And no, i'm not looking for jokes about my height.

If FBS teams will play non-counters, I'm confused. I was under the impression that non-counters could not get such matchups.

FBS teams can play these games but they don't count towards bowl eligibility. Thus, they haven't played many in the past, but it is becoming more and more commonplace. Also, an FBS team can only count 1 FCS counter win towards bowl eligibility, so all of those FBS teams playing two FCS teams this year are playing non-counter games. Its no different than playing a non-counter team.

I was wondering why more PL fans weren't commenting on this in the Albany vs. Cincy thread. One of Fordham's argument for scholarships (FBS games) may not hold as much water in the future if teams are will to play non-counter teams and still pay them.

This is a perfect test case for all new programs.
Compare the way GA State is doing it versus Old Dominion.

I would be willing to bet that ODU will end up with a bigger fan base and better football teams than GA State will.
GA state may get to FBS faster, but when (if) ODU does, I bet they'll be a stronger program.

Any projections as to what they're thinking attendence may be for these games? How prevalent is GaTech in Atlanta? How much of a factor is UGA in the metro area as well?

Check out my avatar to see the new helmet. As for the new panther....as I said on our board, it looks like it should be on a can of malt liquor. The GSU however, is PRICELESS!!!

GA Tech attendance is okay but they do not sell out all their games. This is for a stadium that seats somewhere in the 50K range- not talking a big SEC size stadium. They will probably sell out Va Tech this year and UGA but that might be it. UGA is a factor for the metro area as well as the entire state of Georgia.

I don't expect to high attendance for GA State. They will probably get some numbers the first year but nothing outrageous. If they have 1oK for their first game then i think they should be overly excited. The program that I think will ultimately hurt Ga State will be Kennesaw St if/when they start a program.

OMG, it really does. Perhaps the marketing research of the area around Ga State's campus made it the favorite choice by far for just that reason???

Has the Lamar-Georgia State issue been resolved...? Here's a recap if you do not know the timeline...

1) Lamar announces their schedule WITH Georgia State

2) Georgia State announces their schedule SANS Lamar after the Cardinals had released their schedule

3) Georgia State issues opening schedule t-shirts WITHOUT Lamar on it - GSU fans claim that this is a collectible since Panthers will probably have one more game, possibly Lamar.

4) Georgia State head coach Curry answers question at a pep rally shortly after schedule release and states, " that we have had Lamar on the schedule for a while but we have not received a contract from the school yet".

5) National FCS media question it - was mentioned in one, if not two national FCS columns

6) As of Oct. 24, 2009 - a good while (in fact TWO months and almost two weeks) after the schedule by Lamar was announced - still no game listed on Georgia State's official schedule.
