BROOKINGS - South Dakota State has won seven games in each of the past three seasons. That's something that hasn't happened at the school in 15 years, and has brought a certain amount of respect and top-25 acclaim just five years into its NCAA Division I history.
Generally speaking, a seven-win squad is talented and dangerous. It is not, however, going to the Football Championship Subdivision postseason.
That will be the key question for the Jackrabbits this season: Can they take the next step, move from plucky program to championship contender? Or have they reached a plateau? . . . (read more)

Stop playing such a brutal OOC schedule every season. No one in the FCS has played as many good teams OOC in the past 3 seasons as you have, not even App.

1 game? where you stupid punt returner actually is stupid enough to take the ball from the 3 yard line, when our football knowledgeable team knows that a SMART player wouldn't catch the ball.
or the fumbled punt by drago? or the 1 bad pass of steve walker in 4 years??
oh yea.. that 1 game, where NDSU had more fans in attendence than SDSU at that dump C.A.S..
we aren't too worried about your program that got lucky, *and ndsu's team last year gave up towards the end of the year because playoffs werent attainable*

2007-11-17 North Dakota State W 29 24 Brookings, SD
2004-10-09 North Dakota State W 24 21 Brookings, SD
2002-10-26 North Dakota State W 25 20 Brookings, SD
Its not right that since 2000 the SDSU/NDSU game as been in Fargo 6 times and in Brookings 3...
2000 in Fargo
2001 in Fargo
2002 in Brookings
2003 in Fargo
2004 in Brookings
2005 in Fargo
2006 in Fargo
2007 in Brookings
2008 in Fargo
and in those 9 years the series is NDSU 5-4

If NDSU did indeed let up on punt coverage because "your returner is stupid and we're smart" and "gave up...because the playoffs weren't attainable" then your staff and team are Football Retarded.
Not sure what you were looking to prove with those arguments, but whatever it was, it went over like a turd in a punch bowl.

Gee, the punt return from the 3 yard line worked out pretty well since he took it to the house. What about when we blocked Dragos punt? Or when Roehl got absolutely lit up and fumbled late in the fourth quarter?
1 game where you were ranked #1 and lost. My favorite part of that game was when Joe Mays tackled his own guy that sprang Koening for the winning touchdown.

BROOKINGS - The South Dakota State football staff has moved closer to the Dykhouse Center while taking a step back in accommodations.
Everyone except head coach John Stiegelmeier - who hasn't had time to pack up all the paper piles and pictures in his office of 21 years - has relocated into four trailers at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.
Why is a Football Championship Subdivision program spending the season in what amounts to tenement housing?
Because construction is ongoing at the Dykhouse Center, SDSU's $6 million future home, and cosmetic upgrades - fresh paint, new flooring - are under way inside the Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center.
Moving the football staff now allows others in the growing department to get settled into different offices before the start of the school year. . . . (read more)

Meh, I'll believe it when I see it. As of now, you have trouble raising funds for couches and carpet in your new football building, so forgive me if I'm hesitant to believe you can raise the $40 million-plus for making your stadium comparable to ours in the next 5 years...

The point is, at this latitude you are obviously doing something right if you are still playing football on a grass field so late in the year -- say, December -- that it has turned brown. My hat will be off to SDSU if that is the case this year.
Bonus points if they get a home playoff game and it snows.

"The Marker" is the most coveted prize in football in the Dacotahs. It truly signifies the best football team in either state. It is also a series that has been charmed by great play, the early BISON wins were a prime example of that. It has also been blessed with unbelievable upsets as seen in the last 2 SDSU wins. In fact all the games have been well played by both teams.
This game has risen to prominence and is now the largest sporting event in the history of the Dakotaz. The two major universities, The Mighty Land Grants, squaring off in football is something all Dakotans are interested in.
The fact that SDSU is holding the trophy is a testament to the ability of their team to get the upset win. Last years win was the biggest upset in the history of the series.
If the teams stay equally matched the series will also answer the question about indoor vs outdoor football. Every other year, in theory anyway, its played outside. Eventually we will be able to see trends and make judgments about how weather affects the game. In the mean time, as we gather those stats, get ready for a hum dinger. NDSU wants the Marker back.

SDSU offensive lineman battles back from adversity
terry vandrovec •
[email protected] • August 29, 2009
The South Dakota State football team was without 14 players due to injury for its scrimmage Friday at Howard Wood Field, and a 15th - cornerback Julian Wagner - went down during the low-contact exercise.
That's all the more reason to celebrate the health of offensive lineman Jacob Ludemann.
The Nebraska native was maybe the most promising recruit at his position, at least on par with current NFL prospects Casey Bender and Casey Knips. But less than two months after signing a National Letter of Intent in 2005, he was injured in a head-on, high-speed collision not far from his hometown of Norfolk. . . . (read more)

Seeing the progress SDSU has made in their move up puts the miracle that Erk Russell authored and Tracy Ham engineered in perspective.
Here you have long established programs making a move, adding facilities, and seemingly stuck in a rut recordwise despite playing anybody anywhere which I applaud. SDSU's team was leaps and bounds better when they came to GSU in 2007 than 2004 and could very well contend for a playoff berth this year.
But contrast that with what Erk Russell accomplished. In five years Russell had restarted a dormant program from scratch, drove the community to fund and construct an 18k seat stadium, won two national titles...
... and yet Coach Russell is not in the College Football Hall of Fame. xnonono2x

I presume he's talking about a game we hosted against Winona St. in our last year of DII. There wasn't much over 5K that game, which was held over Thanksgiving weekend and against a team which we were maybe 4-5 TD favorite over. I sure wasn't going to drive 300 miles to see it. Not sure what the excuse of the folks in the RRV was though. Call me a bad fan or whatever, both those were the type of games that led us to leave DII.
I want to ask this. I thought the SDSU/NDSU rivalry was better than against the UXD's because the fans were more civil toward one another. I'm seeing much of the same crap with this post as you would see in a NDSU/UND post??

NDSU wants the Marker back.
xeyebrowx
Umm I don't think you can consider last year an upset. Sure the Jacks hadn't won in Fargo since the early 60s but the Jacks also played most of that game without their starting quarterback. The Jacks were the better team last year

I agree and it sucks.
I think that a lot of the residents of this part of the country have some sort of complex. Kind-of that small-town politeness, what did you say about my team, go-f#ck yourself thing. And it's not just the rabid fans who do this, it's a large portion of the population. I thought it would be gone with the Jacks, but it's only building.
Also, this thread is about SDSU taking the next step, not NDSU.

You Will Suffer Humiliation When The Sports Team From My Area
Defeats The Sports Team From Your Area
As you can see from the calendar, the game is coming up. I'm sure you are as excited for it as I am, as our cities are rivals and have been for quite some time. Your confidence in your team is high, but rest assured, you will suffer humiliation when the sports team from my area defeats the sports team from your area.
On numerous occasions, you have expressed the conviction that your area's sports team will be victorious. I must admit that every time I hear you make this proclamation, I react with both laughter and disbelief. "Ha!" I say to myself with laughter. "What?!" I say to myself in disbelief. How could you believe that your sports team could beat my sports team? It is clear that yours is inferior in every way.
When the sporting contest begins, the players on your team will be treated as though they are inconsequential. It will be remarkably easy for my team to accumulate more points than yours. There are many reasons for this, starting with the inferior physical attributes of the players representing your area. Strength, speed, and agility are just three of the qualities that the players on the team from your area lack. The players representing my area, on the other hand, have these traits in abundance.
I would not be a bit surprised if the individuals on the team from your area were sexually attracted to members of their own gender. That is how ineffective they are on the field of battle.
Underscoring your team's inferiority is its choice of colors. It is ludicrous to believe that your team's colors inspire either respect or fear. Instead, they appear to have been chosen by someone who is colorblind or, perhaps, bereft of sight altogether. The colors for my team, on the other hand, are aesthetically pleasing when placed in proximity to one another. They are a superior color combination in every way.
While we are on the subject of aesthetics, let us compare the respective facilities in which our teams play. While my team's edifice is blessed with architectural splendor and the most modern of amenities, yours is a thoroughly unpleasant place in which to watch a sporting contest. I know of what I speak, for I once attended a game between our respective teams in your facility. Let's just say the experience left me wishing that my car was inoperable that day due to mechanical problems, rendering it impossible for me to get to your area to attend the game.
If you need another reason why the sporting franchise representing my area is superior, look no further than the supporters for the two sides. Not only are the supporters of the team from my region more spirited, but they are also more intelligent and of finer breeding than you and the rest of your ilk. In addition, the female supporters of the team from my area possess more attractive countenances and figures than yours. Some of the women from my side that I have observed could make a living by posing for pictures for major men's magazines. The women who cheer for your team, I'm afraid, are far too unattractive to do so.
One of the more pathetic aspects of the team from your area is the fact that only people in your immediate area possess an affinity for it. By means of contrast, the team from my area inspires loyalty and affection in individuals who live in many other geographic locations.
To illustrate this point, let me tell a brief story: Recently, I was on vacation in an area of the country far away from my own, and I saw many individuals wearing items of clothing that bore the insignia of my team. I approached one such individual and asked him if he originated from my area. He said no, explaining that he simply liked the team from my area and had for many years. Interestingly enough, during this trip, I saw no clothing or other paraphernalia bearing the insignia of your team.
Do you still doubt that the team from your area is inferior to the one from mine? Just look at our teams' respective histories. In the past, we have defeated you on any number of occasions. Granted, there were times when your team beat my team, but those were lucky flukes.
The day of the game will soon be at hand. And no matter how hard you pray to a higher power or how many foam accoutrements you wear in support of the team from your area, your team will be defeated. We will win and you will lose. This is your fate.
Prepare for humiliation. It shall be upon you at the designated hour.

SDSU tabs Crawford as starting quarterback
South Dakota State University head football coach John Stiegelmeier announced Monday that Ryan Crawford has emerged as the Jackrabbits’ No. 1 quarterback out of fall camp and is expected to start the Sept. 12 season opener against Georgia Southern.
A senior from Oro Valley, Ariz., Crawford entered fall camp as the quarterback with the most experience in a Jackrabbit uniform. During the 2008 season, Crawford played in six games and completed 14-of-20 passes — 70 percent — for 106 yards and one touchdown. His most extensive playing time came in the season finale at North Dakota State as he stepped in for an injured Ryan Berry and completed 10-of-13 passes for 50 yards and a score. . . . (read more)

Crawford named SDSU starter
Terry Vandrovec •
[email protected] • September 1, 2009
Career-threatening injury or not, Ryan Crawford will be the starting quarterback at South Dakota State after all.
The fifth-year senior from Arizona was given the nod by the coaching staff Monday, besting three other contenders to start the season opener against Georgia Southern on Sept. 12.
In advance of that contest, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Crawford will receive the vast majority of the practice reps with the No. 1 offense. Redshirt freshman Thomas O'Brien and true freshman Mike Whittier are neck-and-neck for the No. 2 spot, according to Jackrabbits coach John Stiegelmeier, with junior transfer Lee Mondol next in line.
"At this point, maturity" set Crawford apart, Stiegelmeier said. "He's been in the battle some, has made plays in tough situations. They're all good players, they're all great young men, but now we can go ahead and start game planning to the specific abilities of the No. 1 guy." . . . (read more)

I get tired of these other teams fans lumping all Bison fans together and saying that we all said we were gonna dominate the MVC or the playoffs etc etc etc. NDSU has a very big fan following for an FCS team....there are bound to be some pot stirrers/idiots....every team has them if they are any good at all. The majority of Bison fans are not like that. The fans didnt pick us to win the MVC last year it was the media or the coaches or whatever, but not the fans, so from that we get we all said we were gonna dominate the MVC. I respect SDSU and believe they are building a good program down there and I won't make any excuses about the last two losses to them.....they are a good team. It makes any fan look stupid when they say if we would have done this or that we would have won or it was a fluke that you won. With all that said NDSU's program is a great program from coaches to facilities to the fans. We already have nine or ten commits for next year, which never happened in previous years. Admitted last year was a disaster with all the talent we had and to underachieve and go 6-5 was completely pathetic and will not be tolerated or accepted by NDSU or its fans. 6-5 or 7-4 may be acceptable by some teams or programs, but they don't go over to well here and the fact that we see these as crappy years is a good thing, because it means we have come to expect to win championships, whether they be conference or national or whatever. If your program is looking at 6-5 or 7-4 and saying it was a good year...expectations need to be set higher. Good luck to everyone this year. Go Bison! Sorry for hijacking an SDSU thread. Later

SDSU has been on the edge of the play-off eligibility for the last three years (granted, two not eligible due to D-II to D-I transition), and hope to break through this year. MVFC is a GREAT conference for the xDSU's (it is the "natural" upper midwest FCS power conference) that they should be playing. Winning that conference would be huge.
As can be seen throughout several predictions, SDSU gets little respect (Rodney Dangerfield syndrome xlolx) because during the D-II years, Jacks didn't make the play-offs. SDSU doesn't have the 8 National titles like our Bovine brethern :p and all during the 70s/80/90s a conference title had to get past the Bison, or the Sioux or UNC Bears, teams that all won national titles during that period. Looking to build a tradition of winning and starts this year! xthumbsupx

It's the first NAMED game of the season and celebrates the strong cereal grains industry prevalent in SD. Scholarships, sponsorships and activities are presented at halftime, just before the Pride of the Dakotas marching band struts their stuff.

There are 2 "Bowl" games each year and our Homecoming which is known as Hobo Day. While I am positive 89 and Rabid could do it much better job describing it than I, I'll give it a wing.
First game of the year - Cereal Bowl - used to raise funds/awareness for grain farmers and one of the farmers associations (SDSU is a land grant institution with a strong ag program).
Second game of the year - Beef Bowl - used to raise funds/awareness for beef producers. see parenthases above.
There is also typically a shrine game squeezed in there somewhere.
See, told you 89 or rabid would do it better

It's the first NAMED game of the season and celebrates the strong cereal grains industry prevalent in SD. Scholarships, sponsorships and activities are presented at halftime, just before the Pride of the Dakotas marching band struts their stuff.
I believe all 5 home games this year are named -
Cereal Bowl - Ga Southern
Beef Bowl - Ind St.
Dakota Marker - NDSU
Hobo Day - UNI
Sr Day - SIU

Oh ok. At GSU, we have a theme for every game like senior day, blue out, faculty/staff day, and so on. We don't have any games called bowls except for the Hugo Bowl from 20 years ago. Does the winner get a humorous trophy featuring a cereal bowl? That'd be kinda neat.

When grain industry reps give you giant checks for something like $2 million at halftime, you name a bowl after them.

Awww. I'd actually like seeing a goofy cereal trophy. Take $100 out of that 2 mill check and we can make this happen.

You mean FBS.....and they should be FCS..Ball St, Cent. Mich and Minnesota which i think won 2 games the year they lost to NDSU.
Pretty sure i watched C. Mich play purdue in a bowl game that same year....Just to give you a bit of context.
And if i remeber right C mich scored something like 48 points.....hmmm......contexts...
And the next year ball state went almost perfect, though thats the next year and college footballs momentum really swings hard. :P

I can't wait for SDSU to have the money to redo those bleachers and CAS in general but it might be awhile...
6 years wasn't too long.
Go jacks!

I understand why you hate it, after all the Bison haven't won at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium this century.

NDSU freshman were just being born the last time NDSU won a national championship in football (1990). xlolx
Wow, that also changed quickly.

Just like NDSU knows how to win when they are playoff eligible?
Boy that sure changed fast.

He does have a wife and kid now though. I think there is an ever so slight decline in his average number of posts since that happened.

No kidding. I'm mostly a lurker on this board, but reading that made me LOL multiple times. So great.

Despite all the smack, if it weren't for the stupid NCAA regionalization SDSU would have made a couple of deep, deep playoff runs. I'd say they've made the next step.
