Red Sox OF Jacoby Ellsbury stole third base in the first inning tonight, it was his 55th steal of the season setting a new Red Sox franchise record for steals in a season. Ellsbury will easily put distance between his new record and the former record of former Sox player Tommy Harper.
Ellsbury is already well past the 1/3 mark of reaching the teams all time stolen base mark. He now has 114 steals in 296 games, not quite 2 full seasons worth, the all time leader is Harry Hooper who stole 300 bases in 1,647 games for Boston.

I love it...man he is so fast. I remember seeing him when he was down in Portland and they were playing at Manchester, I told my buddy to watch this "kid" before the game and he delivered!

Unbelievable that no one in the dead ball era had more steals than that. Tommy Harper is a nice name from the past. Sorry to see him lose his record.

Ellsbury setting a stolen base record for Boston was one of the easiest records to break as the teams historically have never been built for speed.
To put it in perspective, there are 30 MLB teams...
Ellsbury is currently tied with 10 other players for #685 all-time
for stolen-bases

And the funny thing is by the summer of 2011, Ellsbury will have the Red Sox all-time career stolen bases record...I just hope he can steal home a few more times!
