NAU Football: Herrick gets off to quick start in scrimmage
Michael Herrick clearly entered NAU’s first scrimmage of fall practice on Saturday as the team’s No. 1 quarterback. All Herrick and the Lumberjack coaching staff were looking for was a solid performance from the junior and an opportunity to raise his confidence three weeks before the season opener at Arizona.
The mission was definitely accomplished. Taking every snap with the first-team offense, Herrick rebounded from a slow start in the scrimmage and went 9-for-11 for 106 yards and two touchdowns. In his first series under center, Herrick took two sacks in the first four plays and then couldn’t convert on a 3rd and 15 from his own 30-yard line.
In the next series though, Herrick went 5-for-5 and led the team down the field for a 65-yard scoring drive that resulted with a 14- yard touchdown run from running back DeAnte Piper.
