Nicholls St to Drop to Two-Year Status?

While not a specific football-related topic, it could become one really quickly if Nicholls State were to stop playing Div I sports. The threat is real for Nicholls State. It does not get any more real then when a state representative tells the local business and education community that it's on the table.

The key is not shutting down Nicholls State as a four year or further cutting funding for higher education. It's supporting education in this state, something our "Eye on the Presidency" governor refuses to do...

On the bright side, the article has a few major players saying it is not likely and they are on the side of the school retaining it's status. Says one individual quoted: “Frankly, we haven’t got to the point where we have any hard decisions like that yet,” he said. “I see Nicholls as a great partner in education in this area. I can’t see it going any other way.”

HOUMA — Nicholls State University could be at risk of becoming two-year college or subjected to further drastic cuts, a St. Mary Parish legislator told business and education leaders Thursday in Thibodaux.

State Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin, told business and education leaders that the university may be targeted by a new board aimed at making higher education more efficient.

“You’re in trouble,” Jones told the Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon designed to detail the Legislature’s regular session, which concluded in June. “There’s a big bull’s-eye on Nicholls State University.”

They better reverse their decision to place LSU-A back to 2 year status before they touch any other 4 year university.

Can they do that though? Wouldn't any decision involving LSU-Almost, LSU-S or LSU-E have to be made by LSU?

The obvious would be to close or downsize LSU-Almost and LSU-E.

Jindal is taking advantage of the national economy and using it as smoke and mirrors for the reason for the budget shortfall in Louisiana...while in reality the budget shortfall is going to be largely in part due to all of the taxes he has cut, and will cut.

I would not be in favor of closing ANY school.

I do believe La needs plenty of 2 year schools, but LSU-A needs to be one of them. LSU-E serves a good purpose as a 2 year school just as SOWELA has in Lake Charles. Sowella offers Trade type of courses as well as helping achedemic non-qualifiers eventually quallify to attend McNeese. An it does so at much less of a cost than it costs to attend MSU. Same with LSU-E.

But LSU-A needs to be a 2 year.

Oil is back up above $70 again.

Louisiana's budget is based on $65 oil so revenues will now be restored.

Let's see how long it takes to reverse some of the budget cuts of the past 3 months.

The article reads as if Nichools would be a "two year" as in "first two years", i.e., leading to an associates degree. Is there any scenario where it could be a college just for juniors and seniors, thus maintaining university status and feeding in students from two year colleges instead?

LSU-Almost could be easily turned back into a 2 year degree granting institution as they only offer 2 or 3 four year degrees...everything else is associate. xthumbsupx

Up until about 5 or 6 years ago they were a associate degree university. Two governors ago, Mike Foster, owed an Alexandria representative a HUGE favor...and thus we have LSU-A at their current status.

My guess would be that they would honor the 3rd and 4th years for Juniors and Seniors, but that is just me thinking with a Heart.
