8/15/61:
The Giants execute a master stroke by acquiring 34-year-old quarterback Y.A. Tittle (right) from the 49ers for guard Lou Cordileone. Tittle slowly but surely assumes the starting job from aging but still highly regarded veteran Charlie Conerly and gives New York four superlative seasons, which include three NFL East Division titles (1961-63). He’ll lead the league in TD passes in 1962 and ‘63, many of them to primary receiver Del Shofner, and will retire after the 1964 season. In 1971, he’ll be named to the Hall of Fame.
