8/13/88:
Dodgers pitcher Tim Leary, sent up as a pinch hitter in the 11th inning, singles to center field, driving home the winning run as Los Angeles edges San Francisco, 2-1, at Dodger Stadium. The winning rally is not without controversy. Pedro Guerrero led off with a single but was ejected from the game (along with manager Tommy Lasorda) for arguing about a non-balk call on Giants reliever Joe Price. Franklin Stubbs, not exactly a speed merchant, is sent in as the pinch-runner for Guerrero and carries home the game-winning run. The Dodgers’ positive karma will continue all season, culminating in a surprise triumph over Oakland in the World Series.
