8/11/50:
Vern Bickford of the Boston Braves fires a 7-0 no-hitter against the Brooklyn Dodgers at Braves Field. A durable right-hander, Bickford will go 19-14, leading the National League in starts (39), complete games (27) and innings pitched (311.2). In baseball lore, Bickford will always be the answer to a trivia question. He was one of the other two starting pitchers (along with Bill Voiselle) on the 1948 NL champion Braves when Boston fans were fond of reciting the catchy refrain “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain”—not wanting anyone but those two stalwart hurlers to start games for the pennant-contending ball club.
