Returning from cancer surgery, San Francisco left-hander Dave Dravecky pitches one-hit ball over seven innings before faltering a bit in the eighth and gaining credit for a 4-3 win over Cincinnati at Candlestick Park. While today’s triumph results in no fewer than a dozen standing ovations, Dravecky’s courageous quest to return to the big leagues is headed for heartbreak. Because much of the deltoid muscle had to be sacrificed to remove all of the cancerous tumor in his left arm, that arm lost its natural elasticity and control mechanism. In his next outing, Dravecky will literally break his arm while pitching, ending his career.
