Wow! The sports cut are W Swim/Dive, W Soc, M/W Golf, M/W Ten. They are keeping all the major sports however. They never did have Mens XC or T&F. Green Wave athletics will sponsor six programs that will compete in eight sports--football, baseball, men and women's basketball, volleyball, and women's indoor and outdoor track and cross country
I know some other, smaller and less prestigious universities in New Orleans (in the athletics area) have cut their entire athletic departments for the time being...

I'm surprised football didn't get axed. Considering it has the biggest budget, it's an attractive target for "cutbacks."
Frankly if I were Tulane's president, I'd be reluctant to cut football because currently, it brings notoriety to the university on a national level. They're out there essentially advertising a school whose campus isn't even open at the moment. After they're done rebuilding the campus, and the city starts to rebound, I think Tulane will have a tough time attracting students nationwide. There's a real chance they could become a "regional" university as US.News would describe.
Are boosters or alumns helping foot the costs for football?

Tulane did not cut any of their higher profit sports (i.e baseball, bkb and football). Only keeping WXC/T&F probably because of all the events they can do without leaving Louisiana and Texas and Title IX.
I have no clue where FB will be located due to the Superdome situation. Tad Gormley Stadium (really a track stadium which could be used for football) is not an option I do not think due to location in accordance of where flooding was...

I think "higher revenue" would be a better choice of words, as I doubt football makes a profit. Didn't Tulane briefly drop men's basketball in the early 90's due to some rules violations? It wasn't an NCAA sanctioned death penalty, but they felt it need a "clean start."

Meant to say "higher profile"...kept going back and forth with what I wanted to say and came out with "profit"...meant "higher profile"...

So what happens to TULANE's status as a D1 member if the number of programs they have for men/women drop to under 16?
Are they going to make some kind of special "exception" considering the circumstances that brought this on .......................even though they thought about doing this a few years ago anyway?

From ESPN...
" The university said it would continue to participate in NCAA Division I athletic programs, including football, baseball, men and women's basketball, volleyball, and women's indoor and outdoor track and cross country. Eliminated were men's track, men and women's tennis, men and women's golf, women's swimming, women's soccer and men's cross country."

The NCAA president and staff have assured the university that it will be able to secure the waivers needed to continue to compete as a Division I program.
I wonder how long the waivers will last....

I figure Tulane brings back the teams slowly over the next 5-10 years. Tulane is going to bounce back stronger than they were and they realize that athletic programs are key to this. It's not like they won't have the facilities in place...

I heard about this on the radio this morning. Very unfortuniate for the athletes that were relying on their schlorships. :(

I believe the athletes are taken care of through this summer. Not sure what happens after that....

With the programs disbanding, they will be able to transfer (if they want) to any school without having to sit out a year.

Word out of Tulane is once things settle down this spring, they'll have an athletic renewal program about how to get athletics kicking as soon as possible, including bringing back these sports eventually...
