8/7/74:
Six years of preparation pay off when French high-wire artist Philippe Petit, helped by some friends, stretches a 450-pound cable between the still-unfinished World Trade Center twin towers in lower Manhattan and makes eight crossings (four round-trips) before being coaxed down by the NYPD. The early-morning stunt lasts about 75 minutes and generates such public acclaim that all criminal trespassing charges are dropped.
