Similar to the Basketball thread, other than Lehigh, Cornell, Penn, Hofstra, Harvard and UNI how many schools out there have a wrestling program that is in or close to getting in the Top 20? The Preseason AWN Poll had only Lehigh #8, Cornell #9 and Hofstra #16 as the only I-AA football schools with wrestling teams ranked in the Top 20. Once the early season duals and some tourneys get held over the holidays the new poll will be out in January, but who else is on the verge of 'movin' up'?

I thought UNI was ranked 20th? Maybe they are like 22nd, but I am almost positive they are top 25.

The state of Iowa and wresting...

I think I saw Cal-Poly as receiving votes in one of the polls

There are two schools, UNI an Cal Poly, that I'd love to see come to our new 'Snakepit'--historic Grace Hall. Place would be packed. We haven't wrestled you guys enough.

Two of the NAIA schools in Montana have wrestling, but Montana & MSU do not.

Cal-Poly

How about Tenn-Chatanooga?
App State and the Citadel have teams but not a whole lot of noise out of them.

NDSU was a power in DII ... I'm not sure when they get to send guys to Nationals. Would they be in the Western tournement?

oppps forgot Bucknell! Welcome back! ... poke poke poke Colgate?

ASU always seems to have 1 or 2 really good wrestlers, but no depth. UTC is apparently making a push to really upgrade their program...

I bet NDSU will be tough...they probably get a ton of recruiting mileage by hosting nationals every year.

I'm not a big wrestling fan, but I think NDSU's team is very young this year. We will get to send the kids to nationals next year (06-07). Hopefully by then we can make a splash.

My boy Derek Moore is ranked #6 nationally at 141 lbs for UCD. The Davis wrestling program, along with women's gymnastics, has been D1 for years while every other team was D2. They finished 18th out of 52 at the Las Vegas Invitational last weekend.

Big effort to get wrestling moving in the South with the Southern Scuffle--looks like an excellent tournament being held Dec. 29-30 at UNC-Greensboro. Lehigh, Minnesota, and some other top 20's will be there...

I beleive NDSU will be joining a conference with UNI, SDSU, Air Force, Wyoming, EIU and others next year for wrestling, we are very young and had a few seniors who would have been starters this year transfer to DII schools so they could compete for a title (which I can't really fault them for). We should get better every year...

I don't want to sound arrogant or anything, but isn't UNI's program far better than most of those teams? It just seems like it would be unfair putting one really good team in a conference with programs with not as much success.

there has been talk of this new wrestling conf. joining the five Big 12 teams, however I don't like our chances against Oklahoma St, Iowa St, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri

No one likes their chances against Okahoma State! ;) It' them and the rest of the Top 15. Although UNI would seem to be at a higher level then some of the others mentioned in the new proposed conference with EIU, NDSU, etc., being with UNI would like make them better in that they'd be able to recruit better wrestlers knowing they're going to wrestle top teams. Not everyone can wrestle for OKie State or Iowa. Hopefully the conference does well and we get more schools supporting what I consider the purest of all sports. :)
